It’s time for an all-German 3-way drag race!
Mat’s in the all-new BMW M2 ‘lite’, the M240i, and he’s facing off against an RS3 saloon and an AMG CLA 45 S!
When you look at the stats on paper, you may think the M240i is the underdog. After all, with a 3-litre straight-six under the bonnet, it can put down 374hp & 500Nm. In comparison, the RS3 & AMG come equipped with a 2.5-litre turbo & a 2-litre turbo, which can put down 400hp & 421hp respectively!
However, it’s not just about power output, right? All cars can put down 500Nm, but while the AMG has the most power, it’s also the heaviest, tipping the scales at 1,695kg! Could that prove the difference? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

As an RS3 owner - I was intrigued by the M240i but quickly discounted it as: 1. Similar price as RS3 here in Australia - so no price advantage. (The new M2 will definitely be more expensive). 2. The deficiency of the RS3 (noise can be remedied by an exhaust but the extra lard in the M240 - not easily removed.

Mr. Achilles, I take the chance to thank you for your many videos on the M340i Touring. You convinced me to buy one. I just picked up the car 3 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I switched from a CLA 35 AMG shooting brake which was a disaster (unreliable, uncomfortable and bad built quality). Thanks for the great content and greetings from Switzerland!

Impressive performance by the Motorola T92 walkie talkies. Tried them at the weekend for a car convoy road trip. They did alright to just beyond line of sight in car to car communications. Not bad for a licence free radio.

The only thing I miss from mercedes was if they kept the AMG line to at least V6. Too bad European emission laws have made them to switch to 4 cylinder vehicles. It's a shame because I'll need to stick to my 4 banger until I can afford a real V8 amg

And time 12,7s in CLA45s is very bad for this car. My A35sedan does 13,0s with 100Hp less, so something didnt work well with LC procedure on CLA.

The thing is it does make 421hp but very late and the 500nm window is also very late and narrow in the rev range. HP is not everything

Image the M240 would had been tested against its real (price tag) rivals A35 and S3; The advantage of the M140 will be huge

Lol those are not rivals to the m240. The m235i Gran coupe is a direct competitor to the s3 and a35/cla35. The m240i in other races isn’t that quick. It’s only quick off the line, I can show you a few races and it’s barely quicker than a stock golf r from a roll. Regardless, it’s not a rival to any of these cars

@@vollcare4076 totally agree, who else is making a car like the m240i? Shame they don’t make an m140i anymore, that was truly unique. RS3 still makes more peak power, but I have no doubt the m240i is making similar, or more likely More torque down low. The a35 engine is meh, the s3 has a very good motor, but nobody can deny the b58 is the best of the bunch.

@@bradobrado5243 I’m not saying the Golf R/S3 is quicker or faster than the M240i, but the big advantage it has is off the line with the launch control. Yes it will still win from a roll, but it’s not quite as big of a difference. I can show you some of these videos that I’m talking about- Where it’s much closer from a roll.

Wow! That M240i did a good job! Didn’t expect that! It’s extremely well designed. It brings back memories of the old E30 M3. Beautiful car, the best looking of the three beauties if you ask me!

Really? I'd say the AMG wins in looks, then Audi and the M3 looks the most rudimental. Overall if I was to pick one I'd pick the Audi interms of performance, looks and the sound.

Objectively speaking, in the photo-finish of the rolling race, the Mercedes seems to appear to be ahead in the 2nd last frame. Due to the perspective of the BMW being closer to the camera, makes it seem like it's ahead in the last frame of the photo-finish. So the Mercedes seemed to have won the rolling race - or at least a tie with the BMW.

The BMW is unlikely to be properly run in yet, so should get a little quicker when it is. It's also significantly cheaper than the other two, being less than the base price of the Audi when fully optioned. And has a pukka inline six.

Enjoyed this video, the synthesised noise in the bmw sounds like it's optimised for social media. It is quick though. Do people actually test these cars on dynos to check manufacturers claims? I think I like the look of the Merc most though. The audi in saloon form is cute. It was showing autobahn form with really pulling at high speed.

It's the CLA45s, but I agree. The A45s Hatch has done a 12.1 in the past. I have seen some AMG models struggle to launch, but I'm not sure if that happened here.

They are more fun.....itshard to explain. But tuned cars break down most can't even live up to their hype. I like the stock cars racing vs tuners.

It wasn‘t the driver‘s fault. It had a properly timed launch every time. Everyone can push down a gas pedal in an automatic gearbox.

Totally. Really 50hp difference is only going to be seen top end. Lower down, the Mercedes is struggling with its weight. The RS3 for some reason always struggles and needs a remap to wake it up. All in all though, can’t deny that BMW can just make a car that has a well connected engine, chassis and drivetrain. All working together it shaves seconds off. I still struggle to like them though for some reason.

I get 12.0 in the dry in my CLA 45 s so the car or driver in this video were faulty. Almost certainly the driver. Hopefully not for marketing reasons

@@TeacherToolkitDemo the m2 was never about big power it was about balance your m5 was for that, no one learns lessons more power doesn’t mean more fun, driver engagement the sound it was never about straight line speed, all new cars are fast the speed limits don’t change doesn’t make them more fun just means you go to jail quicker 😂 if your driving on track and chasing lap times I get it but if you don’t live at a track it’s a waste no one drives everywhere at 110 mph +, if you want speed then you will love the electric era more hp and torque will be a wet dream on paper…

This is outstanding performance from a low powered engine the B58 against fully fledged RS3 and A45s, this engine really deserves to be crowned best inline. it manages to keep up in a drag and in roll it beat RS and A45..all in a heavy shell..Hope to see a drag between M240 v 2021 Supra...M2 would obviously trash the rivals

The BMW is rear-wheel biased, unlike the other two, so doesn't need a gimmick to drift. And without such a gimmick it clearly drifts better than the others that do.

Skill level is a nice way to say it. I would say it is pure incompetence when u can’t put it in Race Mode, left foot on the break, right foot full throttle and then release the breaks. As a cla45s driver I am almost mad at this guy.
