With so many cars around these days, you'd think there are loads of awesome sounding cars on our roads, right? Well, you'd be wrong!! With new regulations coming in, so many new cars these days are fitted with particulate filters and soft limiters, and it's devastating to those of you who love a glorious exhaust note!
But thankfully, all's not lost! There are still enough cars out there which sound absolutely epic! So with that in mind, we've ranked our favourite cars from each engine category. So starting with 4 cylinders through to 12 cylinders, this is the definitive video for those of you who love an epic exhaust!

The LFA is the best sounding v10 engines ever. To me, it is the best. Also, Subaru's boxer engine is one of the best sounding 4 cylinder engines in my opinion.

I feel like 3-cylinder engines sound ok. I think their harmonic properties are similar to inline 6's, and they do sound very similar.

For four cylinders i would definitely have to say the Hyundai I30N sounds better in N mode they sound incredible, and i also think the abarth 500/595 is up there especially with the monza exhaust it sounds amazing.

If you dont think making cars safer is worth sacrificing excitment thats fine but driving a dangerous car dosent just efect you. Cars should be getting more safty restrictions and cars should be getting safer. Millions of pepole still die every year from car accidents.

The aventador series has always been on top... other cars have had really ups and downs but the aventador has maintained the thrill when it comes to engine sounds. Aint nothing more brutal and satisfying than a naturally aspirated V12

I agree with everything except for the 4 cylinder. I believe the BMW B48 (especially in the 2020+ M235i) sounds better. Also, the 3-cylinder Mini Cooper doesn't sound too bad.

Have you not heard one of the original Caterham R series on roller barrel throttles? 😮 Easily the best 4 cylinder noise I’ve ever heard. Low down it sounds like a monster huffing and puffing, then in the mid range it clears its throat, before screaming to the limiter. I’ve driven a lot of cars and to date it’s the only car I’ve ever repeatedly accelerated in just to hear it. 😍

In the V8 section it's hard to put all the masterpieces that are currently on sale but i think that the new Ford Shelby GT500 sounds epic and so does the new Lexus LC500 Convertible. Anyway... we will miss this in the future and it kinda makes me sad...

Would have been nice to see the AMG Hot-Vee engine in the V8 section but I wasn't surprised its missing since the "new car" versions sound a bit crap. Could have done what you did with the RS6 though... Pre-facelift and post-facelift on an E63S.

Why not mention the i30 N for the 4-Bangers, it doesnt need an aftermarket exhaust. And the facelift version seems to sound even better then the prefacelift with the particle filter.

It sounds very good indeed. But it's not officially on sale in the UK, so they couldn't include it in the list. You'd have to import it from the US to get it.

This was really fun, Matt! Now do used cars. Makes no sense to buy new cars during a global pandemic with economies struggling and financial uncertainty looming. That's for the average to higher income person.. I love my 490 hp A6 with Bilstein coilovers, and it's just nicer in general, but I really miss my full bolt-on protuned WRX STI.. has a Nameless Performance turbo back and about 450 hp.. sigh I'm saving money to tune a 2015-2019 Audi S8 the same way (APR stage2+TCU). They get 900hp and 2.9s to 60, 10.9s quarter mile! I just love the clean but muscular design and all the luxury, combined with insane power.

For anyone curious (TT RS owner here): For the 5 cylinder engine, they don’t include the OPF filter on the exhaust in the US market. Also, many of us also get an ECU tune to remove or raise the rev limiter (and some tunes include pops/crackles, the APR tune brings the pops/crackles back to stock 2018 version, which is minimal and not as obnoxious). So, they can still be made to sound *glorious* 😊

I actually got a lot of people asking me if I want to sell my 2016 TT because it is made before the particulate filter introduction, which killed the DSG farts and pops & bangs.
