It's time to find out whether the new Audi S3 is an improvement on the old model!
So what does the new S3 bring to the party? Well underneath the bonnet you'll find a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine which can deliver 310hp & 400Nm of torque. It's also AWD (which is a good thing, given the conditions!) and has a seven-speed automatic gear box.
As for the old S3? Well, that's also got a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine which can deliver 310hp & 400Nm. What's more, it's also AWD and (yep, you guessed it) has a seven-speed automatic gear box!

If somebody is wondering why Cars keep getting quieter here is an explanation: Every few Years tightens the EU the emission regulation which forces the Car manufactures to make better particle filter between Engine and Exhaust. These enhanced particle filters are mostly thicker than less polution absorbing filters. And these thick Particle filters are also pretty good at absorbing sound which causes the quiet noises. I hope I could help someone with that

@@Berke5050 It's also the choice of the manufacturer. They tune the exhaust sound, thus can make them sound different, louder and more quiet. We've seen it in F1 f.e. where Force India tried a trumpet exhaust just to make more sound.

Yeah, right it matches Lamborghini's styling a lot. But what to do, nowadays its the new typical styling on newer audi's, to make it look sharper. But don't you worry, its not at all inspired by the Lamborghini's styling, its the styling for it's own the "S3".

Audi is losing their touch. They focused too much on design as in visual aspect, the updated version looks great but in functionality aspect it's not as good as it used to be.

I’ve got The old S3. I’ll still chose that one over the new one don’t like all the fake vents and the inside of the new S3 seems like they have used the cheap plastic. Not a fan.

Sorry dude but I had the previous A3 and the current S3 interior is much better, the exterior has changed very little but at least the screen is much larger and integrated into the dash properly. That’s the case with many manufacturers, they all looked like additional thoughts but at least the previous A3 had the pop up screen rather than just a bolt on iPad on the dash board.

It’s the gear ratios. There longer on the new car for emissions. Hence how the old cad accelerates a little harder.

Maybe aero is improved on the new one and the acceleration of the old one comes from the fact it's lighter? Just guessing because the new one would perform better as speed goes up.

Maybe it's also to do with the torque curve. Could be that the new S3 got more torque on higher revs.

The PPF will delay boost onset slightly so that would account for initial response. Once the turbo is loaded up though, it pulls through. I think the quoted weights are a little out as if the old S3 is a true 310hp, the new one would need to be 338 just to sit neck and neck. I'd be interested to see what revs both cars were doing at 70 and 100mph in 3rd and 4th gear to see how the ratios have changed as the boxes are both DQ381s.

That's exactly the explanation for this video. New S3 is more aero than the old one. Except for that, their performance is pretty much identical.

@@ericjackson6669 Maybe, but this does not seem to affect the results. When the new S3 starts pulling away, it can only be related to aerodynamics. If it came from the turbo, the power rating would be higher than 310

SA Tuning, for example, will remove both soft limiter and the top speed limiter when re-mapping VAG vehicles, plus introduce pops and bangs, it's entirely at the owners' discretion. Nice video Mat!! Why don't you add some utility car Moose tests? Drag Tests are great, but usually they are about vehicles that many of the subscribers will never be able to buy and sometimes I only look at the most radical or diverse. The Davids vs. Goliaths tests are great and one day, for example, you could put a professional driver in a Suv versus an amateur driver with a powerful car. they are just ideas. It is one of my favorite channels. happy New Year!

When u have a PPF/DPF u get more backpressure, which means u need more time to the turbo to load, since there is more force against the turbo spooling After some seconds, the backpressure is overpassed and is pretty much the same with/without PPF, then it all comes to the the real maximum boost aka the "midrange power". That is why u constantly see the non PPF pulling ahead initially (quicker boost), and then the PPF pulls away (more boost)

Matt if you turn traction control off I think it turns off the soft limiter at 4k revs . Definitely works that way on my 7.5 Gti (manual) - might work on these too?

My s1 sounds very similar to the older s3 you tested here, you can get over the soft limiter if the car has a speed input, only has to be rolling.

I'd guess the differences can be put down to the tires on either car, the likely aero update, and Audi may have tuned the engine a touch differently to give it a flatter torque/power curve through 3500 to redline or so.

Did You ever tried turn off the ESP while stationary and in neutral? That way the car revs all the way to redline, at least my mk6 golf does that.. I think that is the way to go.. Great video by the way ;)

Curious about the milage of the 2017 S3, i think that one has some carbon buildup and thats why its dropping behind at higher RPM

Mileage was 8,500 in June 2020. So probably still less than 10k! No carbon build up there

If the car has only done short trips that would explain low mileage and also carbon deposits. I've also seen tests where fresh engine oil makes a difference so when was the oil last changed?

thats why i'm realy happy that i got a Fiesta ST last year. Sounds great, even stock, no soft limiter, drives great even without the performance pack, good as a daily driver and also on longer travels, manuell handbrake, awesome seats and probably the best engine in its class. But yeah: cars nowadays often sound like vacuums which kills lot of the fun

I’ve got a 2014 s3 in Java Green not seen any others about in my area, solid car so far. Not a huge fan of the new shape maybe looks better in the saloon? however not sure why there’s so many saloon s3s just get an s4/s5 if you want that... s3 should be sportback/ hatch

Hi Matt when you did the second drag race with The 2 S3s you put it into dynamic and it went to S1 and then it went back to dynamic D which I don’t think is dynamic so you need to put it in dynamic S1 and then touch the padals on the on the steering wheel and then it will be in proper dynamic. I own a new s3 so this is why I know this.

It's quite impressive from the new S3 to beat the old one despite the weight difference. I believe this is what is making the old S3 take the edge on initial start (especially in the second rolling race), but then there's probably indeed a slightly more "filled" power curve on the newer engine which helps, probably also less losses along the drive line and certainly a lower drag coefficient which ends up governing the race as the speed increases. However, I think your Go Pros could be somewhat faking the result at high speeds as they become significant sources of aerodynamic drag themselves. When the gap between the car is significant, it's unlikely to affect significantly the result, but when it's a close call and that you have to reach crazy speeds, then I can guarantee it's not fully representative anymore. I know the aim of this channel is not to do rigorous science but well, it's just my engineering view on it :) On the other hand, your brake test is always problematic especially again when cars are close. Checking a 10 cm difference once stopped makes no sense when I can guarantee again that there has very likely been much more than 10 cm difference in your respective braking points. You should use the Driftbox or anything similar which really measures the distance to have a clear winner (even tough we could also argue that the grip might be different on both sides of the runway). Again, I understand it's not the aim of these videos but it's still worth mentioning. I think Mat should sometimes just remind people of these limitations so that they don't take those apparent results like the Bible.

If I'm not mistaken this is exactly what happened between the old RS3 and the new RS3 and seeing the dyno charts showed us the scientific reasoning for what we saw in the drag races. Would have been cool to see the dyno charts of the S3s.

Doubt it, just the individual characteristics of each engine. They don't all behave exactly the same, if you had 2 identical cars each engine would behave slightly different.

They need to include hundredths in the 1/4 times, it provides so much more info. If one car is 11.04 and the other 11.05 and you're rounding; you're creating much larger gap than there actually is. It would be 11.00 vs 11.10 creating a 0.10 second gap when the gap is only 0.01, I'm sure whatever you're recording the times with goes out to that place. Or put one of those performance boxes you use in your solo car reviews in each car and grab the times from there. Much appreciated.
