With those tires on the old one, I would have gone full throttle, some wheelspin is actually useful when pulling out of mud or snow, especially with a locking diff. I daily drive a RWD, and the only way to get out of heavy snow is by disabling the ESP and drifting myself out of it

Low range was engaged but the lever was over to the right so the diff lock wasn't engaged. Essentially the Pretender beat the Defender while the Defender was in 1 wheel drive mode. You also have a clutch - use it to advantage to get the load moving the way it is meant to move.

I think the Defender being in second gear, going forward, with the clutch out and STILL getting dragged backwards as soon as the new one engaged some power nullified the driving skill argument. This is a striking result (and I really like the old Defender).

It may sound counterintuitive but because the old one has open mechanical diffs you need to feather the brakes to load resistance onto the free spinning wheel so that the power is more evenly distributed between all the wheels. Or for the price of a couple of wing mirrors on the new one just buy front and rear diff lockers. The new Defender is fantastic out of the box if you’re not experienced, and just speaking personally- I wouldn’t want to be in an accident in the old one, even though I own one ha ha.

That old saying is dead and buried. I remember when the discovery 3 came out. We heard the same old claptrap. 15 years old/later & it’s still going like a dream. Ok mine is the 4.4 V8, so probably the more reliable engine than the tdv6. But it’s full of ecu computers terrain response trickery & they are all still working like the day it was new.

I saw it, it made me a little bit upset... they made the old one look like a rubbish... and old one is ultimate extreme offroader... the new one is an SUV, the old one is a truck.. plus the tests involved speed and response, so new defender was going to win in anything that includes speed, comfort, response, etc... but if you go to extreme offroad, plus you are a good driver of course, cause that’s basically what you need for the old to be good of course... the new one helps you with everything, even though you can watch mor offroading videos between these too, and you’ll see what I’m talking about

As with a bunch of past corporate marketing stunts, such 'tug of war' tests like this are completely useless and nonsensical if the tow rope is not strictly horizontal. As you can see here, the hitchpoint on the new Defender is much higher, wich results in the old defender being pulled not just backwards, but upwards. This effect gets even more problematic if you consider that this also artificially increases the mechanical grip on the rear axle of the new Defender. As the old Defender was indeed able to spin it's wheels, 'power', or rather torque, ist not the issue here. Tug of Wars are pretty much only a measure of grip, and if the ropes connections are not at the exact same height the results are scewed considerably. Even if they were, grip is only a function of weight per area. So, to be fair, the new Defender would indeed also win the 'fair' test. But solely because it is heavier. And that again makes these tests ridiculous if not just performed for pure entertainment (wich i get, this pretty much is). Excess weight is in no way a desireable advantage to any car, neither on, nor off the road.

Old Defender has a centre diff lock which needs to be engaged doesn't look like it has, also would expect the 2.2 Defender Puma to have traction control been on Defs since the TD5 days as Land Rover didn't install axle diff locks although you can fit them aftermarket

Are you being paid by Land Rover to endorse the new "Defender" over the old one? Because it sure seems that way. In this VS series of videos you're constantly nitpicking the old one and don't use all of its potential (diff lock & TC in this case). The old defender has open diffs on the axles, so it has only got two wheel drive, one front and one back. It has no traction control to balance it out. I used to run Quaife ATB diffs back and front, which transforms it.

Yeah, in the first test the old Defender didn't have the centre diff locked! You can see the position of the lever is different in the 2nd test, where it is locked. I owned one of these so know how it works, unlike Mat it seems.

Diff lock on the old one wasn't engaged. Traction control is available on the old one. And anti stall is only on first gear low. On grass its always down to tyres and weight. I wish these things were done properly.

Also note the rope is higher on the new defender. This will have the affect of lifting the weight off the old one and driving the new one down into the ground. I'm not convinced that a 110 with difflock and traction control with those tyres would loose to a new defender when it had road biased. For the record I have a 110 XS Utility. It has traction control and centre difflock.

It would of been more fair if the rope was tied level to both defenders. The new defenders rope is higher so when the strain has been taken the new defender is slightly lifting the old defender = less traction for old defender.

Old Defender was in low range but not in diff lock, or maybe they did it in diff-lock first but didn't get the result they wanted 😉

Seamus McShamish the supra is a very outdated car, the M5 is much newer and it has launch control aswell as many other assists which can help it out
