Yes. They have obviously never heard of the scenario when the ocean recedes very rapidly that’s when you get to high ground. But oddly enough some people have never heard of such a thing. And go play on the exposed reef. And think. How cool. Or or maybe it’s low tide. Not realizing that the tide doesn’t fluctuate much the closer to the equator you. FYI. But whatever. Prob should be a caution sign at the entrance. Next to the hide your valuables not in your shoes

@@harrietharlow9929cascade is much more dangerous due to the proximity of the fault. They apparently run tsunami wave drills at the schools etc. like the rest of us do fire drills. But better hope your unreinforced masonry building survives the quake so your rooftop safety can actually do its job. Assuming the wave doesn’t dwarf the building to begin with. I couldn’t imagine living in a zone where imminent disaster is possible at anytime in the future. Earthquake is one thing but the tsunami is a whole different beast

@@judd0112 I moved out of western Washington State precisely because when this thing hits, it will not only be apocalyptic for coastal regions (they're only about 60-65 miles from the fault itself), but in addition, the area inland will be badly hit as well. I remember the 1964 Alaskan quake and images of devastation have never left me. If I had children, I would be considering a move east, away from the coast, like a couple hundred miles or more.

A projected 9.0 earthquake is not just several times larger than the 1994 Northridge quake which was a 6.7. It would be hundreds of times stronger.
@jckorn9148
@jckorn9148 6 ай бұрын
The '94 Northridge earthquake was NOT on the San Andreas fault. A true rupture of it hasn't happened in over 150 years, 300 years for the section near the Salton Sea. Both sections are well overdue. Remember the Turkey earthquakes last years? Southern California will experience the exact same thing whenever the San Andreas goes. Ground displacement as much as 24 feet. Only thing that will beat it will be the Cascadia megaquake. Japan 2011, that's what's in store, it will a biblical level event for the Northwest.
@johnkellmer5133

This man's mocking tone is off-putting. Also, the narrator should have mentioned that more recent studies have indicated that Cascadia quakes occur with an average interval closer to 250 years. That the quakes probably happen along the entire length of the zone at once, although this is not a certainty; that the Cascadian subduction zone may rupture in 2 or more segments, not necessarily at the same time. The quake is expected relatively soon. Such a quake would without question engender a tsunami, the only question being of what size.

I'm pretty sure it's an AI voice? For a while I didn't notice, but lately I've definitely noticed that a lot of syllables/sounds sound exactly the same, when he says numbers it's super obvious, but the words "tsunami" and "cascadia subduction zone" was very obvious too in this one. It's gotten super distracting. When they're using AI I don't know if they can really change the "tone" of the narrator too much?

Your summery is well written and absolutely correct. As I noted above, the Cascadia Subduction Zone is no joke. I've been reading everything I can find over the past 30 years about the CSZ and, given the enormous strain locked up in the rocks of the Zone, when it finally breaks, it will be awful. I respect and fear the Cascadia because I know what it is capable of.

I watched a presentation from a noted geologist and he showed how a Cascadia event would indeed be bad but it just would not be the catastrophic flooding event to the major cities in Washington and Oregon. He said some California towns would be more impacted but the north west is situated in a way where really devastating water would not reach.

New Madrid is worse. Higher population. More built up. But Cascadia is bad. Along with San Andreas, Yellowstone (which could kill most of the planet). Worse scenario is one of these could go off and trigger the others. As far as death is concerned Yellowstone is the worst. Destroying the food supply by massive amounts of matter in the atmosphere could kill up to six billion people.
@harrietharlow9929

Please learn some geology. Yellowstone cannot trigger either Cascadia or the San Andreas fault. Not possible. However this is still hypothetical pending more data.

@@musicman8270 If you want to believe nonsense, go to it. Japan's earthquake was entirely predictable. There is an adjacent subduction zone to Japan--that is where the Tohoku earthquake originated. The Cascadia fault ruptures typically in one of two ways: the entire length or the southern half. The ratio of the two types is nearly 1:1, but there's not pattern to which one will come next. The most recent rupture in 1700 was along the entire length. The thing of importance is that quakes from just the souther half are shorter (3 mins) and of lower magnitude (say 8) and will likely have more limited damage to the large more northerly cities., whereas quakes from the entire fault line rupturing are longer (4.5 mins) and are estimated to be capable of over 9. Quakes on the southern half of the fault (either south-only or full fault ruptures) occur about every 250-300 years. Rupture of the entire fault occurs about every 550 years. As was stated, we are 324 years from the last full length rupture. You can do the math.

No. You are confusing the 1964 Great Alaskan Earthquake/Good Friday Earthquake (magnitude 9.2) and its resulting tsunami with the 1958 Lituya Bay Tsunami, also in Alaska. The Lituya Bay Tsunami (1958) was triggered when a 7.2 earthquake caused a huge landslide into the narrow bay, resulting in a tsunami. in the bay. This landslide tsunami was over 1700 feet high and caused 5 deaths. The 1964 earthquake caused 15 deaths directly, and the tsunami caused 124 deaths (106 in Alaska, 13 in California and 5 in Oregon). (Another source says a total of 131, rather than 129, died as the combined result of the earthquake and tsunami.) *"The largest tsunami wave recorded from the '64 quake was in Shoup Bay, Alaska, with a height of about 220 ft (67 m)."* Source: Wikipedia article "1964 Alaska earthquake". A different source, "The 1964 Alaskan Tsunami" article in Western States Seismic Policy Council site says "The state suffered enormous damage, and the resulting tsunami waves reached as high as 27 feet in some areas.." I don't which is correct, 220 feet or 27, but the 1964 tsunami was not thousands of feet high.

@harrietharlow9929

No, it will not. The last time Yellowstone erupted was 70,000 years ago. There have been many quakes in the Cascadia Subduction Zone and none of them has ever triggered a quake, let alone an eruption at Yellowstone. Cascadia is simply too far away.

Yellowstone is the current location of a stationary plume of magma that appears to move (from its original off shore location now to Wyoming) as North America rides over it to the SW. The subduction zone is due to the residual Farallon plate (know as the Juan de Fuca plate) diving below the North American plate. They are un-related.

I wouldn't worry too much. There have been earthquakes and a major eruption of the Cumbre Veija volcano on Las Palmas in 2021 and nothing has changed. Scientists at TU Delft in the Netherlands reported in 2006, that the section of the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja that was conjectured as potentially failing and falling into the Atlantic Ocean to create the hypothesised La Palma mega-tsunami was both too small in mass and volume, and far too stable to break away within the next 10,000 years.
