Cascais is located in the Lisbon region and known to be more expensive than the city of Lisbon. It has a more resort feel and is great for a vacation or holiday but what about living as an expat here? Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere show you what life would be like to live in Cascais. You'll see a few cost breakdowns, housing, things to do, and more.

We have lived in Cascais for six months. We rent a lovely T3 in centro ( no view) for 2300. We belong to Oitavos Dunes Golf for 7200/year. We do not own a car as residents all buses are free! And with the senior r,ate on the Viva LIsboa card we pay 20/ month for all buses, trains, metros and ferries in the district t. We live the fact that Lisbon is a 30 minute train ride. However, as you report restaurants are more expensive than other cities and we are priced out of buying anything in centro. Our agent showed us 2 places needing complete gut job, only 840 square feet for 520,000. So hole we love the weather and the many, many special perks of living in Cascais we will likely buy elsewhere.

Cascais is also one of the districts of Portugal with the largest number of social housing projects. High-end and mid to low income often built next to each other. This means you can still find much more affordable prices than in Lisbon (drive or walk a couple of miles north of the sea front and neighborhoods are much more affordable).

Like the neighborhood you have many to choose and all so different, less services near, more quiet, others, with lot of small business but with more people, cars...My wife works in Realestate, if you need some kind of help in that area, feel free to ask. For rich/retired foreigners it's a paradise but for locals rent is impossible...like nearly any city in Portugal. You either own a house or you have to share rent with other people if you're working the minimum wage (you know, the people that are scooping your delicious Santini ice cream). And I'm saying this as someone that lived several years on a 400€ rent )and the minimum wage was little more than over 500€ at that time) for a small T2 and got booted so the owner could raise the rent to almost 800€ with no renovations. Yea, it's a pretty city and you have the world and beach at your beck and call but you better be making some serious money if you want to live with dignity and comfort.

Thanks! We're enjoying visiting a variety of place. We're in Coimbra at the moment, which is giving us a different feel. Yes, absolutely there are people of color in Cascais. Please remember that there are many people from Brazil with a variety of skin tones as well as people from former Portuguese colonies that have moved to Portugal over the years. Those are people from Cape Verde, Angola, and Mozambique to name a few. You would feel fine, however, if you want complete diversity, Lisbon is probably well and truly the best. - Josh & Kalie

I dont understand why they tell that you need a car. There are plenty of buses and even a train that give you direct trip to the Lisbon city center (Cais do Sodré), where you have boats to cross the river to the other side, metro/underground to reach anywhere inside Lisbon. Of course is 30 minutes by train. And the cost of one monthly pass is only 40€ (that give you access to all the big metropolitan Lisbon area, but this monthly pass is only if you are a legal Portuguese resident or a portuguese citizen). See this image: pbs.twimg.com/media/DmZmAvIW4AA540J?format=jpg From 6:30 to 8:30 you have 20 trains. (Almost one train from 6 in 6 minutes, of course this is the schedule of a working day).

Bom Dia! You did a nice job showing off a real jewel of Portugal. You pointed out a couple differences with the Algarve - the other area in Portugal I am interested in - one, being the higher cost in Cascais, and 2nd, the more Portuguese feel vs British expats (they are all over the Algarve - Americans/Canadians, too). I think the Mediterranean climate is preferred - less humidity than the Atlantic, and milder winters. I like the proximity that Cascais has to Lisboa, but the costs seem as high as the USA. Is Vlogging your primary source of income? I have found a lot of great places around the world (I think both Spain & Portugal are appealing - due to climate and cost, but still connected to the great trains of Europe, which I love (US Amtrak trains are pretty bad by comparison and do not serve the country very well, outside the Northeast corridor). I have met a few Portuguese, and they are wonderful, and I am adjusting to the unusual pronunciations of words - they look Spanish, but have a more Germanic sound. Obrigado!

Hi Jim. Thanks for the compliment. We're glad that you are liking this series. To be honest with you, you asked a loaded question about our income source being vlogging. We didn't expect to move here and so quickly transition into full-time content creation but it's been a blessing. A few years ago, we transitioned a side hustle of ours which was expat consulting to just focusing on video content. We incorporated ExpatsEverywhere LLC as a media company and we worked on it part-time until it become a full-time income, but vlogging is not our primary source of income, content creation and ExpatsEverywhere LLC is. KZfaq revenue is very low and wouldn't even take care of cost of producing these videos. We're probably a year or two away from that. 😅 Our Patrons on Patreon really help among a few other things we do. Thanks for asking and thank you for the detailed comment here. - Josh & Kalie

Yes. Oeiras or Caxias have lower prices, for exemple Oeiras is very green and in 10 minutes by Uber (about 10€) you can reach Lisbon or Cascais (Oeiras is halfway point between Lisbon and Cascais). I find Cascais (city) a little too dense and difficulty to maneuver in and out with a car and barebones public transit if you don't have a car. The beaches in the city are too small and get packed easily in the Summer. Requiring you to go to Carcavelos to get a more spacious large beach during the Summer months. One important thing to consider is traffic gets real on the Marginal seaside road at peak hours, so if you are in a rush to get to Lisbon, best to plan outside rush hour.

Being portuguese living in Ericeira, I'll always have a bias on my point of view, nonetheless I can tell you for sure that Ericeira is truly expat friendly since the area heavily lives from the surf industry which is focused on foreigners, so everywhere you go people will speak English and be very helpful. For portuguese standards housing is quite expensive but way cheaper than Lisbon or Cascais, for less than a million you can buy a very nice and modern 4 bedroom villa, and for around 300k a new 2/3 room apartment near the center, add 100k+ in the center. Old Town center has a GREAT VIBE with plenty of very good restaurants and shops very reasonably priced, in some cases you can even say cheap. Some great bar/restaurants over the beaches to have a perfect beer or wine watching glorious sunsets. There are all sort of services in town for the rest it is 25min away by motorway from Lisbon and with a 40€/moth pass you can ride all public transports down to Setúbal area. And finely a gateway to the Oeste area of Portugal with a lot of priceless experiences and places to discover.

Portugal and Cadiz, Huelva, Algeciraz are similar like Miami Florida, hot, humid, best places of Schengen to laugh, being cheerfull, joyful all the time while living and visiting those cities. 12 months is the norm of swimming. As most Portugese citizens and Spanish people had migrated to Latin America, Australia, USA that is why those 2 countries have sparse populations with 12 times more motorways and fast trains than eastern Europe countries' motorways. For a variety of reasons, it can be hard to get a drone up, especially if it's not registered to be in the air that day. I mean, we would need to get permission well in advance and since we don't know where were going until a few days before we go, there's not enough time. A lot of places we've been the geo lock is on because it's close to a monument, heritage site, or more critical an airport. High winds have also been an issue and then in Cascais after launching along the coast near "Casa da guia", an army of seagulls attacked the drone and we had to get it down before they brought it down. 😂 - Josh & Kalie

Hey, thanks for all the info. I’ve been “shopping” around Portugal for a place to retire to. Cascais is def on my list. Actually, I was there just a couple of days ago. Now, I know housing and cost of living is expensive, especially by Portugal’s standards, but, to your comment on cost of living, what is a minimum annual income one would need to live a comfortable life there? Consider someone single, no children, no dependents, no debt. As a reference for cost of living, I live in the SF Bay Area. Cheers.

Thanks for the comment and sharing. Are we talking about COL of Cascais or just COL of Portugal in general. If it's in general, we've heard of people on under $1,500. We think that $2,000 is safer and gives a bit more flexibility in your spending without having to skimp. This is also very dependent on the level of health insurance you need. If you need something basic and not $100s of dollars, you'll be okay on 1,500-2,000 pretty easily in Portugal, but not about to live well everywhere if that make sense. Your housing cost will be your biggest expense and then your grocery bill. Have you seen our REAL cost of living video we made back in March? We tracked very euro spent and we spent without thinking too much about our "budget" just to see how much it would be. - Josh & Kalie

Great videos you guys are producing, thank you. It's probably worth mentioning that a lot of people confuse Cascais Town (City..) with Cascais Municipality. Cascais Town is a "City" within Cascais Municipality. If one is searching for property this can lead to some confusion. In this video, I thought you could have added a short insight into the 5-15 min Atlantic Ocean costal drive up along the N-247 road, north towards the Sintra Mountains, with stunning nature, including the natural of Guincho and Cresmina beaches. I agree that Cascais town and surrounding areas are some of the priciest in Portugal, but in perspective it should also be compared with similar "sought after" locations in other Southern European countries - if one is considering other countries in comparison.

I thought Sintra was more expensive than Cascais? Also, I think it's kinda important to get the feel of how the people are in a location. How they act and behave. IE: Is it normal to hold a street party at midnight on Saturday? (saw that in Santiago and Chitre, Panama) Do fruit vendor trucks travel up and down residential streets at 0530, with loudspeakers advertising their wares? "Bananas, strawberries, tangerines - $0.80/lb!!!" (everywhere in South Korea, to the point you could never sleep in) Do the neighbors behave in a "keep up with the Joneses" manner, ie: snotty and advertising their wealth every chance they get? Good overview of the Cascais area. Honestly, I'd expat virtually anywhere in Portugal, but the more I look at, the less I like places that remind me a bit too much of upscale developments in Florida or US SW. I understand the economics, but that whole business model evolves towards unsustainable phantom economies and over-development that exacerbates unhealthy social stratificiation. Cascais is rather large, with many different price points. But sure, carry on the stereotype. 🙄

Cascais is not an expensive place to live. Portuguese minimum wage is 600€ and the majority of PT earn less than €1500 /month. Sure houses in Cascais are more expensive (specially in the center because it’s a touristic area) but also it’s a safer zone, it has more infrastructures, hospitals, schools and all kinds of stuff. The cost of life is cheaper than Lisbon and Porto or less but you have the option to go nuts and live the wild life

Cascais não é o mesmo de antigamente!! Está a ficar muito perigoso viver lá ou mesmo até no concelho!!

Can you tell me when this video was taken? I don't see masks. I want to visit so badly. My travel agent says it's too soon to go there considering Covid. I have proof of vaccinations.

The video was shot 10-12 days ago and then edited and uploaded 5 days ago. It's very recent but people are certainly wearing masks in Cascais especially where social distancing isn't possible. The Delta variant seems to be countrywide at this point, but depending on where you're traveling from, it's probably no worse. - Josh & Kalie
