artgoat Hey how you do n . Yeah if I was going to sit and type a story of what I knew about him . It would take a while to write. All things he went through in his life was unreal. I we live in Grantsburg Wisconsin . And at the age of 9 he was sent here to live on his Aunt and Uncles farm cause they had no kids (aka) slaves . To work on a Dairy farm . Him and his brother were sent here in 1929 from Wolf Point Montana. He stayed here his whole life working like a dog for them. He got drafted during the war but was sent home because they had no kids of there own . He was almost killed Four times by horses in Runaways . Almost died from Rheumatic Fever , He would of if it hadn't been for the old veterinarian being at the farm for one of the horse's and chewing my aunt out and hauling him to the hospital him self he would of . Then loosing his eye dehorning cows here at home in the mid 50's , getting his hand in the corn picker on November 1 1967 . Times were tough as hell but we don't know it as kids . He spent 3 months in St Joseph hospital in Minneapolis till he got his hook , all this time my mom had a hard time keeping people to milk cows , He was milking almost 40 head of cows . It was a cold snowy winter and I remember all the men in the neighborhood got together and cut wood and brought over 6 big hay wagons of wood for us cause that's all the heat we had . He'd been home for a couple of months and things were going OK. He was try n to get use to his hook . And when those guys had dumped the wood by the house there was a big block for splitting . He was splitting some with the axe a double bit. He gave it a hell of a swing and it caught the clothes line flying back and caught him in the fore head and laid him cold in a puddle of blood in the snow . He laid there about 2 hours till the neighbor stopped to say hi and found him .His Aunt was killed in a car crash in 1970 and he was deeded the farm . Spent his while life for 200 acres Wow . He milked cows till 1975 and sold out . Still did crops. Had a job driving the whey truck for the Cheese factory for a few years . They had the Shits trucks on the road. He was in 4 Roll overs. Said the hell with that job. And that's when he started fixing tires in about 1981 . The old guy could put away a few beers . But his true love was dancing. He could polka till 2 and be up drinking coffee and ready to go at 6:30 . Hell he didn't get gray hair till he was 75 . He died at 80 and the shape he was in 6,2 175 wasn't on any meds or nothing . he would of went another 10 or 15 years. His mom was 96 when she passed. And she did a acre and a half of cucumber s by her self every summer . but he was always happy go lucky . Always said. My Boy ! If you have your Health ! And good Friends ! Your a Wealthy Man ! And I guess he had friends there was almost 350 people at the church. They were packed in like fish . Lol. Thank you so much for letting me tell his story. Roger. Wagenius

james krumm the only thing I would have done different is inflate the tube a little before mounting the outer bead otherwise the tube can get stuck under the bead. also wrinkling in the tube can be help sometimes by deflation and re-inflated of the tire after the beads are seated. otherwise he was very efficient. and I was kinda eyeballing the phone # on the truck maybe see if he needs another guy.

When I did bicycle tubes, I liked to have a little air in them to hold shape and help keep them in place.

It's a good tip, but unlike aircraft tires, tractor tires come in a limited range of sizes, and you just have to use something "kinda close."

Tony only charged $310 including the farm call, and a new Goodyear tube and mounting all 4 tires. Considering I paid almost $2,000 for the tires, It was totally worth it. He had to use a hydraulic bead breaker the first time, because the tire beads were so stuck they couldn't be broken loose with a sledge hammer. Any tire that has been mounted for more than a couple of years is probably going to take special tools to break it loose.

And not a stain on the jacket. They used to mix soot with the rubber to make it stronger, probably still do. That's why us amateurs get dirty around tyres.

MrBear231 See my comment below on tractor tire tube sizes. Tony and I talked a lot about tubes and what causes them to crease, and how well they deal with it. That's one reason I opted to pay extra for the Goodyear tubes, but the size is still "one size sorta fits many."

lmao Goodyear tube...that's just gunna cause problems. I use only the best. Michelin...Goodyear has become crap over the last 10 years. I would not touch a Goodyear with a ten foot pole.

It was easier because he had replaced that tire only the previous summer. You should have seen what it took to get the previous tires off! The hydraulic bead-breaker almost wasn't enough.

First time Tony replaced my tires, they were 75% full of water. He cranked the valve to the bottom and took the valve out without releasing the pressure. The water shot out 20 feet for awhile and drained down to where he could pull the tube out after he broke the bead. He then cut the tube and all the water (and sealant) came out. If I were running tubeless, it would have been harder to get the water out, but it still would have been below the rim.

Then his air tank isn't pumped up for the air over hydraulic Jack and any other tools he "may" need, plus by the way he's dressed it's cold out those 7.3 idi are better left running until you have to shut them down ,of course I'm sure you know it's the service truck running and not the tractor I suppose, I heard it idle up at one point which leads me to believe alot of his stuff is pto driven like a tow truck as well

ROY Markovik the tire is really flexible. some tires have more give than others.

It helps when the tire is practically new. The ones he took off were old and hard as rocks. They did NOT come off easily. He had to use his hydraulic bead-breaker on them.

To be fair, I've found the smaller a tire is, the harder it is to change out. These are 30" rims, so a lot of it is knowing where to apply the force and having big enough tools. The biggest pain I ever had was replacing the front tires on my mower, on 8" rims. The rear tires on some sport bikes, on 16" rims, with rim locks, are some of the most evil bastards on earth to change out.

Tony may not be a sharp dresser, but he knows his way around really big tires.

It's not luck, it's experience. Tony cut his teeth on mining equipment at Alcoa. He's seen more inner tubes than you've seen hot meals.

I'm not arguing the fact Tony is a hard worker but honestly I see enough tires in a day to know not to use a creased tube regardless of its age of a tube has been creased it is the incorrect size and it installed with little care..and also he didn't buff or clean the rim before installing the new Tire.....just a few things that makes me cringe..and I also hope he took the brass collar off the tube stem and replaced it with a plastic one to prevent it from rusting to the rim in 10 years down the road.

Again, you need to consider the individual situation. He already replaced my tires 6 months before (which is why he didn't have to use a bead breaker). Do you think he has to buff the rim every six months? If the paint is good, buffing the rim is just going to CAUSE corrosion (tires down here don't use salt, because they don't freeze). Likewise, there is NO SUCH THING as the perfect-sized tube, these days. Pretty much any tube you buy is going to end up with wrinkles, because Firestone only makes a limited range of tube sizes to fit all the tires for a particular rim size. Guaranteed. That's just reality. Thinking you can have zero wrinkles is FANTASY. The only way you won't have wrinkles is if your tractor just happens to have exactly the perfect size tire for the single tube size that Firestone makes for 30" rims-the TR-218 (which they claim fits tires from 14.9 - 18.4... more or less). Tony and I talked about it at some length. So if you are running 18.4-30 tires, MAYBE you won't have wrinkles, but my 4WD makes it a bad idea to play with tire sizes. I'd rather deal with a small risk of flats than transfer-box destruction. Don't know about your concern that brass will corrode to the rim. That's a new one on me. The previous valve stem was 30 years old, and hadn't corroded, despite the tires being filled. Tony replaced all the valves completely (not just the cores) when he put the new set of tires on it. I'd have to look to see if they have plastic collars, but I REALLY REALLY doubt it. Considering tractor valve stems have a stainless washer between the collar nut and the rim, the likelihood that it can corrode to the rim is pretty remote. I HAVE seen plastic collars crack and fall apart (usually on mowers). That's why very few tractor valve stems come with anything but brass or stainless.

Tractor tube sizes are fairly approximate, and the tire companies consider people who run tubes to be the neglected step-children, since they think "real" farmers are running tubeless, and radial to boot! On the rears, it takes a 16.9x30, but the tubes that you can get are meant to fit a fairly wide range of 30" rims. In Firestones, they "fit" 14.9 to 18.4. As a result, on some tire sizes there is no inflation method which will completely eliminate wrinkles.
