First thanks for the shout-out. W.R. Case and Sons was never a hardware concern. And never sold rifle cases. The Case brothers Andrew Dean and John established homes in Spring Green Nebraska in 1889 having 500 acres for Cattle farms. Started selling knives in Beaver City just 14 miles north. They frequented Nebraska, Kanses, Colorado and Texas. Russ Case spent a lot of time there. When Russ was old enough he would take hunting expeditions to the west, Nebraska and Colorado with his cousins and tint chaplain. In all likelihood you have one of the Cases rifle case😊

Thank you for the shout out! I am quite taken with the mystery. Further to your discovery and preliminary sleuthing I have some thoughts and perhaps a theory regarding the Case snap-buttons. It seems unlikely to me that the straps with the snaps were lifted from the sheaths of two separate knife sheaths. Certainly it is possible, but nobody would likely buy two knives or even two empty sheaths, only for the sake of the snappy straps. So they would have somehow had to come by two identical sheaths sans blades either free or at a very good price. Perhaps the maker worked at Case or had a connection with someone who did? Then they would likely have simply got ahold of a couple snap buttons from the pile and used them in their handiwork. It seems likely to me that Case manufacturered the snap buttons in house. Could be mistaken but I think for the time and the nature of the company this is a reasonable hypothesis. They weren't shipped over from China as in our day. If Case had their own snap-button pressing equipment I suppose it would have been to some degree mechanised, not just a dude stamping them out with dies and a hammer (which could also be for all I know) but maybe a contraption capable of banging out hundreds of pieces in an hour with one operator. Even if they had them made by a different party, it amounts to the same: you can bang out snap buttons far quicker than fixed blade knives. Might not then Case have simply manufactured these snap buttons both for use on their own knife sheaths, but also for sale much in the way YKK sells zippers: to both other manufacturers and businesses as well as the domestic customer? Then there may have been tens of thousands of leather, canvas or card items out there a century ago bearing Case snap buttons The durability of said materials and un-repurposeability of a snap button once whatever it is stamped onto rots out (except perhaps for resmelting) would ensure the current day scarcity of what may at one time have been the number one US brand of snap button.
