6:54 I love the The lookup table with &" with wine added" . That is simply clever and making everything more straightforward and efficient.

I’ll confess, I didn’t do it that way on the day! : ) I think I did something like TEXTBEFORE(,” with”,) and a bunch of IFs - it was definitely less elegant! 😂

Really nice to see the many different and creative ways a problem can be solved (I would never think in solving problem 4 like that). I confess that I am really curious about the problem 5 solution, it's definitely out of my league. Would be really really nice if you could make one extra video showing the logic and trick you mentioned using iterative calc. It doesn't hurt to ask 😁 Thanks for the great work you guys are doing!

Haha - I might get to it at some point, but keeping up with daily tips is already time consuming enough for now, so definitely not before we finish up the boot camp! : ) But check out this video by Excel Wizard that goes through the entire case, including a nice solution to L5 using circular references: kzfaq.info0iiQd-luwY0?t=1247 And if that makes no sense to you, check out this older one of mine where I go through the idea of using circular references to calculate distance in some more detail: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z96Dfsdqvtu6img.html

Thanks for using the case and kind words. I think this shows how you do have more time than you think. you did 4 levels at a relatively slow pace with reading all the questions and still have 4 minutes leftover. My plan for this year is to set aside the first 3 minutes just to read. Unless of course they are eliminating Someone every 5 minutes

Yes, I've definitely decided that I've let the pendulum swing too far in the direction of skimming... I don't know if I can bring myself to do a full three minutes, but will definitely try to take a couple of breaths and read at the start. And thanks for the fun case - it was just as good revisiting it (maybe better without the time pressure 😂). I hope you're going to keep writing this year!

@@DimEarly hopefully I will write another case or two. I have about 3 to 4 that are each about half finished so I am hoping to get some of them finished in the spring, I am not as prolific as Peter.

Great to see a video on my favourite E-sport case. Even though it wasn't that succesfull on the day. Regarding 16:04 Do you know if this will bring you definetly points in this years Road to Las Vegas? Because in last years battles it was just the first three and all (based on the sum)

They changed it at some point last year (definitely by the time of the MEWC qualifier, maybe for some of the Road to Las Vegas too?). It used to be that there were 3 multiple choice and one check sum which could either be right or wrong, now the equivalent cell to copy is a list of all the answers, so you can get marked on each. I think the old format cost me on this one, actually… I got most of L5 right, but only got credit for 3 of them.

Thank you for the case and for the way to attack it. I admire the people who dealt with this problem in half an hour. It took me over 2 hours and I haven't finished yet. Reading the instructions is important, but given the time constraint, it's tempting to skim over them. Level 1, 2, 3: at first, I missed the fixed costs of a basket (the basket itself, picnic blanket, , napkins, etc.). Then, I thought that a bear only brought back one basket and not all the baskets (why? It seemed logical to me but it's not written anywhere). This wasted my time. Level 4: knowing whether a tourist is in a bear's territory took me a long time, with the transformation of references according to bear "ranges". A specific function had to be written. Level 5: that was the last straw! I don't see how a function can solve this problem, especially as the possible paths are very subtle. The case of position N7 is an interesting one. Two things had to be considered: - You need to maximize diagonal passages. - You need to see that you could "cut" into bear territory via N7>M7>L8 and then F14>G15 (25 mins, West path). The eastern route is longer. Following Diarmuid's advice in the video, we could also see that there were easy positions (D29,J29,K29,U28,U27,W27,G23,J20,I18,J16) which could earn easy 120 points. In short, I found the exercise exciting but incredibly difficult. Congratulations to those who managed to get through it in the allotted time. As for me, I'm far from being in that category.

It's very understandable to feel a bit overwhelmed by level 5 - and to have everything take you longer as you get started! I started solving crosswords a few years ago, and I think my average time to complete a crossword fell by >4x over ~6 months as I got used to the format, ideas that kept coming up, etc - and I'd imagine you might experience something similar here if you decide to keep at it. I will say that level 5 definitely can be done with formulas, but it requires some advanced techniques. You can either do it with circular references (see this video by Excel Wizard for an example: kzfaq.info0iiQd-luwY0?t=1247), or you can do it with the REDUCE function and a fairly complicated custom function. In any case, if you found this fun to do, I wouldn't worry too much about level 5 at this point - I don't think anyone got that fully out in the 30 minutes on the day. It's a tough question!

I just had a try before coming to this video, ended up at 550. Your wine solution was nice, I made the mistake of just rushing into question 1 then 2 and so on without reading them first so had to go back and make a profit table. Ended up substituting " with wine added" for blanks in my lookups then having an if for wine add 40. Not very elegant. Also got tripped up for a good couple of minutes with the baskets costs. I think if I allowed more time I was on the way to question 4, did the same thing altering the map but didn't get to the indirect part. I should probably name the ranges too as scrolling up all the time for my lookups started to get annoying. Going to give it a go in this first round just for fun.

That's great - glad to hear you're going to give it a shot! Honestly, 550 is already firmly in the top half of what people scored on this, and if you had made it to level 4 (which it sounds like you were pretty close to) you'd have been one of the top 10. Not to say it will definitely go as smoothly tomorrow, of course! 😂 But it sounds like you're ready to give it a good shot. Good luck! P.S.: I also rushed into the first few levels and substituted out " with wine added" and added back the cost when I did this on the day. It's definitely worth taking a minute to sit back and think about the approach sometimes - if only I could tell which times in advance!

I've noticed that Excel 365 doesn't like handling emojis as well as regular excel. I was trying everything to get 365 to substitute the emoji, which it would outside of a dynamic array, but once inside an array, it started acting weird. My solution, copy the map into my regular excel and manipulate it there.
