Redacting serial numbers is to avoid opportunistic thieves saying they saw their stolen watch on EBay and refer to the "serial number" as evidence

Hiding serial numbers is to keep the Chinese from using real serial numbers on theor copies.

yeah, they can clone a gazillion different watches - but don’t know how to fake serial numbers

Fixed Face no the point is to have a real one. Then looking them up would reveal that a watch with that serial number exists. Sure you can make them up but with the randomized number/character combinations Rolex uses for example it’s a high chance to be wrong.

I have news for you, the knockoff watchmakers have already deciphered the serial number schemes used to generate the numbers of all the popular, legit watchmakers, already.

I don't know that this subject has been covered, at least I've not seen it. Very good idea and very helpful. I have traded a lot in the past using eBay.....it is, or at least can be a mine field.

Almost impossible to tell if the item is stolen The police do not scan eBay for stolen goods as they dont have the time resources or inclination. Serial number is a good indicator if it’s scratched. Price and length of the Auction is a good point.

I am full time ebay seller. The number of feedbacks while does hold some weight-legitimacy. You are looking for the Sellers "Seller Rating. I have a Top Seller Rating. Meaning most of my feedback Positives are from Me SELLING and from Buyers . Go through there feedbacks and wend out the Generic Auto responses. I look for specifics. "Great Packaging Shipped Quicker Than Expected" Or Great Watch Strap for Money" For Example. A Pro Seller will be very detailed as they have nothing to hide. I don't buy from listing generally that are Vague in their description or Have no Description at all.

That is not good practice, because you have people like me, who generally use the same feedback for every positive experience, because cut and paste is easier than making new feedback for every purchase. The only time I leave something different, is if I have a bad experience with a seller, and want to detail the specifics of why it was a bad experience.

I had a strange case where I offered to buy a watch from a private seller in Germany, who then turned me down with the excuse that he didn't want to ship to America. Maybe he was just xenophobic. Maybe he didn't want the watch investigated by U.S. customs. I ended up buying a similar watch from Watchfinder.

Germans are used to very strict customs. It's day to day business here that German customs stops watches from overseas. This can create a very unpleasant situation, because sometimes the buyer hadn't thought about that and about the import duties he has to pay. This in combination with paypal can create a real mess. Many people don't know that especially US customs allow only "gifts" under 100 USD and this includes shipping ... So I fully understand when a private guy doesn't want to cross that line.

I only shop on chrono 24 or other reputable sources online because of this.

@@Hans-Georg_Buddne To protect the buyer and seller of this watch. Some brands do not appreciate people “flipping” their watches. And since serial Numbers by design are unique - they could be traced back to people. I personally would also appreciate that the only person showing the serial number is the owner. And WB wants to keep that clean. Another reason is that you don’t want to give real serial numbers out as they will likely end up in a fake watch.
