The Doomsday Clock isn't a clock it's a subjective measurement of threat. Liked the Dr. Stranglove reference at the start though. Now there's a good movie to analyse.

I got my "fish"/enlisted submarine warfare pin onboard the USS Los Angeles SSN 688 in 1988. Wore my Seiko diver on a nato everyday for three years. Our Chief Engineer wore a Rolex Submariner, have always wanted one ever since I first saw his. Great memories.

I thought this is about the Russian doomsday device, that checks regularly the existing communication to the military decisionmakers and if they are up and responding, everything works. If they fail to respond, it starts its own countdown to initiate a nuclear counterattack assuming the enemy has destroyed the military command and there is no one else to respond in a "propper" defensive way.

I think it's safe to simply ignore it as a novelty. How can it not be political when it was the furthest away from midnight when at the same time the largest country on the planet had collapsed?

Because it didn't collapse in January. The clock is updated only in January of every year. In later years it reflected the collapse of the Soviet Union, especially the distribution of nuclear weapons in the former soviet states.

@@CasebackWatches Seems a bit stupid to update on a fixed date no? Considering it doesn't update to current affairs often enough. It would be like having a clock that only told you what hour it was every 4 hours.

Caseback Watches No, a German made drama series centred around the events you mentioned (actually it was the introduction of Cruise missiles, Pershing II and the NATO exercise Able Archer 83) and how it nearly triggered WWIII. I thought it was an excellent series, very evocative of the period and well balanced in its perspective of the events.
