Great video as always, I stopped using Premiere awhile ago due to the cost, just couldn't afford it anymore, switched to Resolve and was completely lost until I found your channel. I'm still a newb in the nodes area but finally appreciating it more than a layer system, I remember having to click on each layer, open it up to see what effects and what was done to it, although it'll take some practice to get used to, I like the idea that node maps can show me everything that is happening without it being hidden. Thank you, this was a nice comparison, makes sense why even pro who edit in Avid or Premiere color grade in Resolve still.

Just want to say your ability to distill down aspects of video editing to easy to follow concepts and steps is severely underrated. It is much appreciated.

The nice thing about resolve is especially it's internal transformation of color profiles via the CST or ACES nodes. While using a LUT is great for the workflow, it also limits the use cases and makes you dependent on someone else's LUT (at least with Sony - other manufacturers provide fitting Rec.709 transform LUTs). So as for a budget worried creator, working with bought LUTs as a mean of converting LOG to Rec.709 is just a pain and that's where Resolve shines. Not only is Resolve in its most essential part free, but it also allows working with LOG independently from needed LUTs. You can always add your own flavour and and don't have to worry about it. Additionally, Resolves CST doesn't kill data. A LUT will cut your info short if used early and while ,ou can work below that layer in Premiere, it usually requires your timeline to grow vertically and get bloated. You could stack Lumetri layers inside the clip, but that quickly gets messy as well. Imo Resolve has a leg up there with the nodes - especially since you can use them in blend modes and other constellations. Premiere is by no means bad. Color grading just isn't its strong suite and that's fine. Resolve, imo, has advantages especially for those working on a budget and indipentenly from other people's contributions like LUTs or presets. While working with those is by no means bad as well, it just gives you that little bit more of freedom, knowing you can easily get there with out them as well.

Been using Resolve for a year now and no way am I going back to the clunkiness and lag of Premiere. I’m surprised for as much as they charge that they have yet to remedy the very thing you were dealing with when masking out part of the image with Lumetri. Like you, I dealt with the exact same problem with Premiere’s horrible pen selection tool. So glad those days are behind me.

Really nice tutorial, but I have to say that resolve is the way to go if you want to do anything related with color grading. Premiere just looses when you want to do a professional grade. It's not an coincident that Hollywood uses Resolve as their main color tool.

I have seen 20 videos to resolve the problem but i am still unable to resolve the issue. I don't know what happened I am extremely frustrated and want to delete devinci resolve and thinking about going back to premiere pro. Can someone plz help??

A lot of things in resolve is silently moved to the paid version. Even though I dont know the exact solution for your problem, In the past I stumbled upon an awful lot of trouble with davinci resolve, when I surfed a solution 9 out of 10 times the solution was in the paid version of the software. If you dont have a paid version get a paid version to fully use the software. I have moved to premiere pro, money is not an issue for me so..

Obviously when it is come to color grading Davinci Resolve is the winner also free. I personally use Premiere Pro in my projects if you are comming from Graphic Design and Photography back ground Premiere Pro more famillier interface and layers easy to adapt alsocolor grading tools smillar to Photoshop and Ligtroom. Davinci Resolve is like totally different language especially nodes versus layers. When it is come to Motion Graphics and some Graphic Desing in your videos Premiere Pro's Essential graphics panel is great especially if you are working long text box and multiple text boxes. Davinci Resolve's text features primitive level if you have long text all you get is one long line text. There is no text box very hard to manage. Selecting text direcly on video painfull hard to manage. In Premire Pro subtitles are more advanced features esay to costumise. Text to speech also time saver. Davinci Resolve does not have. My Point is if your projects have more Graphics, text subtitles and motion graphics Premiere Pro is more easy. My last words if you want to be colorist or movie maker learn Davinci Resolve. Look at the Video editors job advertisements in your city most of them looking for Premiere Pro and After effects knowledge. Learn both of them and use them in different projects. If you learn one software in advanced level it will be easy to switch to other one.

@OurVoicesOurLives Thank you for answering. I only started learning video editing two months ago. Somehow when I did my research on which app I should learn, I got convinced by youtubers that davinci was more superior than premiere. Tbh now I kinda regret spending time and money on davinci courses because it turns out Adobe has some really cool AI tools and many good pluggins that Davinci doesnt have, also you confirmed that companies and clients want you to edit using Adobe's products. I think I'm gonna have to start again with Premiere, Ae and should only learn color grading in Davinci 🥲
@OurVoicesOurLives
@OurVoicesOurLives Жыл бұрын
@@billythecat They both have cool AI tools really. I would only work in DaVinci if I had the choice. My job prefers Premiere because they pay for a CReative Cloud subscription for the company. I like that I can cut and color in DaVinci. I started out round-tripping from Premiere to DaVinci and back and felt like I would save time just staying in DaVinci. No program is perfect but for my needs and personal preference DaVinci wins. I will also say if you are looking to get hired as an editor the more apps you know and are comfortable working in, the better so if a job uses FCP or Premiere or DaVinci you'll be in good shape. They're just tools, its best to know the basics and fundamentals of being a good editor, and those skills can transfer and apply to whatever software package you choose. At the very core of it all, they all do the same thing which is cut video just in different ways.

The official Davinchi resolve free training has sample footage with a pdf manual and videos. Just load samples and go line by line on the pdf to duplicate what they do. It's a little tedious, but certainly not hard. Actually using each tool teaches way better than just watching. You can work at your own pace. Not every item is covered in the videos, but it will reinforce what's in the pdf.

I despise SaaS too but sadly it pads the profit margins of companies, and they get to rake in monthly subs without having to do anything, and regardless if people are actually using the software regularly or not, therefor investors and stockholders love it, which are the true people companies like Adobe are beholden to. Not their customers. So the practice isn't going away any time soon. The only reason Blackmagic can avoid having to do it as well is because they're primarily a hardware company. DR exist to supplement that, with the benefit getting people in the door. Since if they get used to and like the software, if they decide that they want a nice camera, they'll likely be looking at Blackmagic's offerings first.

I stopped watching color grading videos cuz I don't have s-log 3 and all these other crazy cameras so unfortunately it's irrelevant. If someone made a video talking about 8-bit and HDR 10 plus that would be a little more helpful.
@426Studios
@426Studios Жыл бұрын
Most of color grading tutorials (proper ones) are having s-log3 clips or other LOG clips because because it has very high dynamic range so you can grade it much further vs rec709 clips, thus they can teach you a lot of techniques. By the way, you can still grade an 8bit clip heavier if you use LOG profile that is intended for 8bit cameras such as SLOG2 for Sony Cameras but not as heavy as LOG that is intended for 10bit cameras such as SLOG3, so these videos are still very relevant if you are using SLOG2. Cullen Kelly have a good video explaining LOG footages. There are also many videos here in youtube explaining LOG. He also explained thoroughly the proper steps and the whys on transforming LOG clips to rec 709. I forgot the title of the video, but Cullen Kelly in one of his videos actually demo a grade with mix LOG and rec 709 clips and he explained why he only did light correction for rec 709 clips because rec709 is really intended for delivery to rec 709 devices. As for HDR 10, if you only have a rec 709 monitor, then its really pointless to grade HDR 10 because you just cant see the output. Cullen Kelly also explained it thoroughly regarding HDR. Also, honestly SLOG 2 in 8 bit cameras are really pushing its limits and that's why when Sony released SLOG 3 to consumer 8 bit cameras such as the Sony a73 there were many videos showing SLOG 3 having issues because it has very HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE (so much higher than SLOG 2) and 8 bit cameras cant cope up with it and many veteran cinematographers questioned the move. I guess maybe Sony did it so aspiring cinematographers will get a taste of it and will want to upgrade to higher end cameras because 8bit cameras just cant cope up with it lol. Anyways, HDR grading (meaning delivery to HDR 10 devices) just doesn't do well together with 8 bit clips. Heck, even great OLED TVs such as the LG C1, which are highly recommended by colorists as an alternative monitor for grading, can show 10 bit colors but still are really not recommended to be used to monitor an HDR 10 grade because it still doesn't reach the peak brightness of HDR 10.

@GuidoValdata
@GuidoValdata Жыл бұрын
Don't get obsessed with 8 bit / log! I started with an 8bit / 4:2:0 / 50mbps full hd footage, as so many did. Then came log on 8 bit, but still 4:2:0 and low bitrate = very delicate files with a distinct washed out look. With 8 bit, any 8 bit, you can dial more contrast in, but cannot dial it down. Meaning you can't lift shadows or lower highlights even where one channel is clipped. (If you don't understand the concept of color channels clipping stop thinking about your gear for now and learn how it works first). What I'm trying to say here is that a limitation is an advantage if you're a beginner. It really is. It teaches you method, resolve in your choices (because you don't get to have 16 stop of DR, you must choose what to expose for). And lighting. If you only have 11 stops of DR and a delicate 8 bit file you must help the camera with lights. And that's all you need to worry about. Everyone wants a better camera. But you'll know when you NEED a better camera. Cheers
