hey Casey, brand new to DRV and this was super easy to follow along. you don't happen to have a tutorial or vid discussing using fusion to animate an object in a video you've already shot? say like a picture frame on the walk starting to crawl. Sorry for the lack of VFX terminology.

Hey Casey, I got a question, I’m new to all this, and I film in 60fps to do speed ramping on clips, so could I do that and keep the timeline as 24fps? Or do I have to chance the timeline to the clip it was shot in?

Thank you Casey for this wonderful and extremely easy to learn Davinci Resolve (DR) video ....I downloaded the free DR version (Windows, v18 beta 3) and have been "tinkering" for about 2 weeks with it after watching/following many excellent instructional videos (specifically - Casey Feris, Jason Yadloviski, MrAlexTech and Patrick Sterlingand, no particular order). I have also re-edited/re-made several previous vidoe editing/creation efforts to help me learn DR better. This instructional video really helped bring home the difference in the Edit and Fusion pages and how I can utilize each more appropriately/effictively. I have now purchased a Studio license and am waiting for it to arrive (then uninstall Free and reinstall Studio). Not that it's needed, but a little background to help with context ... I am a retired Aerospace Engineer (GE Aviation, designed/built jet engines) and have occaisionally made personal movies/slideshows from family and hobby endeavors (I'm a scuba diver) using Android/Apple and GoPro devices. My video editing background is using Cyberlink's PowerDirector (v13 and v20) and although it is a pretty friendly tool, it is specifically targeted for the consumer-market (me). But I am wanting to do more (not professional but do more family, hobby and also chruch-based videos to help augment our ministries) and so am launching into Davinci Resolve with both feet. Again, thanks for all you are doing to help people (me) learn video editing (with DR) and stoke our passion to be better and do more ... please keep it up! I truly appreciate your humor and the great/friendly teaching style in your videos ... I ALWAYS learn something from them (especially the device to watch and do on own to learn where I thought I knew but couldn't remember how). As a final comment, I appreciatd the advice on the use of keyboard shortcuts, middle-mouse buttons, and other tricks - it's so easy when you know all of those items to take advantage of them during a video and we newbies are scratching our head on how you did some of these now "riding a bike" skills ... they were helpful. Please consider having a video dedicated to just hat topic.

Hi Casey, One of our members has been having issues with 4K and understanding how to use Proxy files. He came up with this process for us to use.. Could you see if we are on the right track? Greetings All, I have cracked using the Proxy feature. It is essential for me when using 4K files in a project, otherwise my laptop will not cope. Critical is that the Crash Course video does not describe how to actually create the proxies. DVR is not needed for this process. Follow the following steps to create the Proxy folder and files you will need. Load the Proxy Generator App. (It can be found in the Start list of Apps under Blackmagic Design, NOT within DaVinci Resolve itself) In the App press Add. Navigate to the folder of interest where all the Video Files are located. (Multiple folders can be selected by Adding them to the list Select the folder. (If you are testing this use only a couple of files in the folder of interest otherwise the processing can take a long time.) It will appear in the Watch Folders table of the App. I tested using only one folder. Start the process A new folder, called Proxy, will be created within the folder holding your videos. This Proxy folder will contain your proxy files. Nothing has to be done with this folder. You can now follow Chapter 9 of the Crash Course video by Casey. If you haven't dragged the 4K video files into the DVR Project, do so. Go to the Playback dropdown and select Proxy and select use the proxy from the menu. As you can see your video has certainly helped our group.

As a brand new editor I can tell you how much I appreciate the content you provide. Was very daunting trying to decide which software to learn from the ground up. I have no bad habits per say as I have never really used anything. I have spent alot of time watching videos and recomendations on editing software and I have decided Resolve is just the best for me and it seams like outside of those editors that "Have been using PP and AE my whole career" for someone new coming in looking to learn and design in an advanced setting this is the best choice. I'll start fee until I hit a wall then I will def purchase. Quick qustion (theres probably a video) but do you have a export for your keybinds that you use? We have a similiar style in arrangement of workflow I feel like and learning on your binds just feels like the right option. Casey thanks gain. Great content. I appreciate everything you put into it.

Pro Tip: NEVER USE THE DELETE KEY on the edit page. If you want to remove a clip, select it and hit the backspace key. Then, if you want to remove the gap as well, select the gap between clips and hit the backspace key again. I know this sounds like more work, but believe me, this will save you heart ache. The delete key does something somewhat unusual in Davinci Resolve; particularly if you are working in multiple layers. When you delete a clip off the timeline it also removes the gap without proper respect to the various layers of all the clips to the right. What that means is if you have nearly finished a project and then go back to remove 1 clip from the middle, using delete can screw up ever edit to the right of that on the timeline. If you insist on trying it, experiment carefully and be prepared to hit undo (Ctrl-Z) if you are not happy with the outcome. It may be that there is some special case that this IS what you wanted to do. But I found repeatedly that DELETE caused nothing but trouble. I have stopped using it entirely. Since I don't use the cut page at all, I am not sure how DELETE responds on that page. I am only saying this regarding the edit page.

I tired to figure out the Fusion page a few years ago and looked around youtube. There were ZERO good tutorials yet everywhere I looked, everyone was ranting and raving about how great Resolve was. I had my suspicions that everyone recommended it because it was free but few actually knew how to use it beyond basic editing. Many were instead commercials for pre packaged effects. This crowd has an incentive NOT to teach you how to use Fusion. I've used Premiere and others in the past few years but I decided to take a second look at Resolve lately. Your tutorial was the best I've ever seen and actually makes sense of it all.

I do a lot of unlinking clip by clip manually. Its important to note that while this may be a lot to take in as a beginner, after you have gathered the basics, this is also a great refresher on tools you may have overlooked or not known you needed during the first pass.

Awesome! You can do it! A lot of it isn't much different from Vegas honestly. And yeah nodes can be intimidating, but man they are a really powerful way to work. You got this!

This is awesome. I haven't done any editing for about a year and had forgotten a lot. Within the first 10 minutes of your video, I learned more than I knew (like the media page and bins which I have never used), before. Thank you.

Coming from Premiere Pro, this felt like I'm right at home. Also I never knew that Davinci basically is Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects and Media Encoder all in one, crazy! Thank you for making this tutorial! You made my transition to Davinci easier than I thought!

WOW, I feel like I should park my steam engine and put the box camera away. Been a photographer for 50 years. I guess things have changed, lol. And you do an amazing presentation highlighting Resolves capabilities and the zillion "hidden" features I would never have found. I've had many aviation related instructors over the years, which has also gotten very technical. So many very knowledgeable educators fail at presenting the basics and jump into the level that needs a foundation to be meaningful. Thank you. I am going to keeping watching and learning, and using Resolve. BM owes you big time. Tim

Dude, I've watched it in full like twice. Thanks a lot for this content, it's instructive. For someone who's not really new to video editing as I have worked before with both Vegas and Hitfilm, this was full of new things to learn, so I've needed to watch it multiple times. Very helpful! Thanks again and keep it up!

Great job Casey! I learned so much from this video. When I first opened DaVinci Resolve it was very overwhelming not knowing how to get started as there are a ton of features in this product. Your presentation of the material was perfect for me and you covered the key aspects of each page. Thanks for putting this together and sharing!

What I like about Resolve is they give you multiple ways to do the same thing. Many people work differently and in Resolve they really make it easy for all kinds of people. I personally don’t like keyboard shortcuts I use the mouse for everything so it’s nice I can do that.

Other people have already said as much, but dang your good. I almost never leave comments, but I really felt I had to on this one. As a very small time creator, I've been wrestling with editing for months. I'm only halfway through your tutorial and I'm already breathing a little easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Just decided to start learning to use Davinci Resolve 18 properly. I've used it before but only on the surface (in the edit page mainly) and this is the first video I've watched to start. Thanks so much for putting this content available to us, I subbed and cannot wait to learn more with your other videos!

Duuuuuude!! Blew my mind. My face when the mountain moved up with the mask using modes and how easy you made a damn great looking logo. Ha. Then the colour grading.... then audio. Hell this has sold me on downloading Davinci. Everything you've explained is so clear, just awesome. (If KZfaq doesn't work out - I doubt it coz you're content is great - then getting into sales product demo's is for you... you'll be able to sell anything to anyone, brilliantly done).
