This fire truck belongs to the production crew that put on the concerts and entertainment for the @Gambler500, and while driving home from the event, it blew driveline while going down the highway. So I took my rollback up to tow it out of there. I decided that in order to save time on the side of the road, I would just winch it up on the bed and get it off the road, then head to my house to store it for a few days until I can take it back over the mountain to its home.
Be sure to check out our Patreon project where we use whatever it brings in in a month as our budget to help someone the following month! I was never a fan of the Patreon idea until I realized that I can use it to help others instead of myself, so I created the Patreon Project where we can all combine our efforts to make a real difference in people's lives and make the world a better place! For as little as a dollar a month you can join the group of awesome people already on board and be vote to help steer the ship along the way!

@@CaseyLaDelle Several years ago I read an article that said research had been done that indicated when a driver is "impaired" their brain will unconsciously make them veer towards bright flashing lights, especially in the dark. If that is actually true it explains why so many emergency personnel get hit while working recoveries and accidents. Be careful and stay safe however you see fit!!

@@CaseyLaDellethe police here usually switch their light bars to solid red/blue in the rear once they are stopped. Maybe solid amber would work for you. Or it wouldn't be that hard to make an LED light bar that fades on and off to mimick an old school rotating light.

I totally agree with you about those lights. As a snow plow operator for 34 years the lights on police cars make it almost impossible to plow around accident sites. There needs to be a dimmer on those lights at night. Our snowplows have way too many lights on the back now days that are too bright. Yet 17 plows were hit in Idaho last winter because people drive with their heads up their backsides like that truck that blew by you on this job.

Every single time I pass police on the side of their road with their lights on, I feel like I’m partially blind for a few seconds. It makes you more aware that there’s something going on up ahead, but once you get up to it, you’re blind, so it actually makes it less safe because drivers can’t see where the hell they’re going. It’ll slow ya down for sure, but that doesn’t do any good when you’re driving blind.

What most people don't know, even most of the cops, is that the newer 'quality' led bars have a dimmer switch specifically for night work. The cheap Chinese bars don't though. Now, as much as I dislike California, if more states would follow the California highway patrol's light bar policies, there would be much less blinding in the night.
@k1j2f30

They not only blind you as you are coming to a scene, but they ruin your night vision after you pass for miles down the road! That makes it double dangerous when you can't see anything after being blinded for several minutes down the road! I've had deer run in front of me after passing an accident scene with all those lights, and it was just luck I didn't hit it because I couldn't see it until it was directly in front of me, in my headlights. Blinding drivers at night is a very dangerous and a stupid thing to do!

Big Thumbs Up on the NO blinding lights for roadside work! When doing roadside SAR of cars over the edge of mountain roads I always preferred old fashioned rotating sealed beam amber lights. Oncoming traffic around blind corners would see the lights moving across on the far canyon walls long before they'd see just some flashy non-spinning LED strobe. Felt much safer! Also wearing headlamps lights up each individual rescuer.

Brighter lights are good in daylight conditions and foggy conditions to warn vehicles at a distance that you are there. The problem is at night the bright lights can overwhelm your eyes and blind you close too. A good example of this is the dim/dip headlights fitted to vehicles. At a distance you can keep your headlights on main beam but as you get closer to oncoming vehicles you dip your headlights so should the oncoming driver so you can both see the state of the road/possible obstructions and see past the oncoming vehicle. I've always believed Hi-Viz led beacons should have a lox power mode for night use.
@tomcardale5596

The old school ones with the rotating mirror focus the light in to a much narrower beam. That means higher peak intensity (so can be seen further) but less chance of overwhelming and washing out everything in the area. The term is a "collimator" or "collimating mirror".

I didn't read all of the prior 400+ comments (so sorry if this is repetitive) but i will echo the many comments about the emergency lighting. I spent 38 years in the fire service and one constant throughout my career was attempting to impart similar knowledge to the many apparatus operators (including our paramedics) I encountered on how to best manage the apparatus lighting, including turning off the headlights when facing traffic (as you do with the trucks "work/flood" lights) and letting the "colored" lights do their job. Thankfully some progress is being made (ie: automatically shutting down all "white lighting" on fire and ems apparatus when parked, the newer "dimming" LED lighting) but so much more needs to be accomplished including standardized color regulations and flash patterns, but that could be an endless discussion. I did particularly like the concept of using the inbound facing floodlight to light up the work area and identify the hazard. Never considered that use (since we could always shutdown the street if needed) but I will keep it in mind now. Anyway, excellent work and by all means ...... Stay Safe.

The lighting issue gives me an idea for situations like this. A drone that only goes up and down limited to 100feet/30meters elevation with colored flashing LED’s visible for 3 nautical miles on the sides (to conform to nighttime FAA regulations), and a downward facing high luminous LED flood to illuminate the area below as a work light. With a flight time of at least a half hour, and a hand held small controller. Give it height settings of 5 meters, 10 meters, 20 meters, and 30 meters at maximum. This way there would be no blinding lights toward any traffic, and it would alert drivers of a situation up to 3 miles out (depending on terrain).

You are so right about the blinding lights. I don't know how many times I've come upon first responders at an accident scen, parked facing traffic with the their alternating headlights on high beam. You are drivinf into that scene completely blind. The last time I stopped and yelled at the cop directling traffic to turn his f'ing lights off. He was parked beside and ambulance facing oncoming traffic and both had those bloody headlights flashing on high beam. BTW, investing in some reflective clothing will make your night calls a lot less dangerous for you.

Hey to those truck drivers around the lower mainland area of BC here...see what this honest professional driver Casey did? He measured the height of his load...maybe steering wheel holders here can learn that before slamming into overpasses like they have been lately.

I like the wheel anchoring method, however would suggest, either doing both front and rear of same wheel or moving to a chassis anchoring point. Just in case the wheel moves/slip/park brake failure etc. If the wheel is pulled in a line meeting its center axis, than it is perfectly ok. But if it is anchored above, than two directions are recommended. Very nice thoughtfull work. Very smart about the lights. Love your work and super professional attitude

After driving a F550 SuperDuty tow truck to help with my brothers tow company, I recognize the dangers tow drivers face. I always slow down and move over to make sure they have space. The bright strobes and now off-road lights mounted to street trucks are blinding. I appreciate my off-road lights when it's super dark off highway and rarely when on a deserted rural road. I am very aware and cautious to aim my road lights properly and never use my bright lights when anyone could be blinded. Be careful out there and watch for those who help others putting their lives on the line!

I don't know which I prefer - watching Casey do a roadside recovery on a big a$$ vehicle on a busy, dark roadway at night or reading the comments about it. Tough call.

Great video, I need one of those bright adjustable work lights on a stick! If stuck on the side of a road, looks more effective than many other things.

Nice job. Also not a fan of the super bright led light bars. They might not be to bad if they had half of the bulbs in them. I prefer the Code 3 MX7000 lightbars. On the front chains you used, I always put the tail hook looped back into the chain, then pull with the binder on the hook side. It keeps me from having the hook on the chain with no tension on it where it might fall off the chain and slide off the side of the bed.

You should get the clip where the lady played Dukes of Hazards when she jumped the rollback 130', when you're talking about why you don't like doing these types of recovery calls.

Thank you. I have been advocating safety for years. Light pollution being a huge issue. Everybody and their grandmother has flashing lights on their cars houses and sawhorses. The driving populace are so inundated that they don’t even see them anymore. Please spread the word if you aren’t a road hazard or obstruction loose the lights as you are doing yourself and others a disservice. Thank you
