Basically every bike infrastructure ALL OVER THE WORLD are bad designed. Sometimes I think that are made just for make some cyclist happy without thinking about how it will be used. I ride every day and I’d like to do it following the rules and without annoying other people, but it’s impossible in my town (Turin, Italy)..

Casey, this is exactly why I got out of the traffic division. Although it's rewarding to take DUI subjects off the street, I can still do that as a patrol officer and not have the headache of some jackass Sergeant asking me why I only had two tickets for the day. I couldn't write BS tickets. Two years was enough for me. I personally think we (police) have much bigger fish to fry than a bicycle ticket.

Except when a cyclist (or skateboard rider or car driver) jumps a red light, causing someone to swerve and hit an innocent bystander. Not specific to the example in this video but it's entirely possible along with many other chain of events. Surely as an officer you can see how a small infraction can cause serious consequences potentially killing someone. It's only a minor offence right so who cares? Well tell that to the families who's loved ones have been killed by a driver not paying attention for what is a BS ticket by your standards. Still got bigger fish to fry? Same applies to using a mobile phone while driving.

Some offences are created to generate income for a city, police are rewarded for tickets brought in, not for doing right by the public that day. I can give you an example from where I live in Germany at the moment, I do street performing and they recently banned amplifiers, now people will get tickets for using an amp for a singer yet there is no punishment for the drummers down the street playing nearly twice the volume. What it does do it provide the police an extra way to increase revenue and profit from it but what it isn't is "fair" I know some officers like the guy commenting here who let me off, he is a fair cop but sadly he is one of the very few.

With better design, it still possible to go straight. Its all about efficiency. Like how a highway don't have too many left and right turn and only have 1 exit/entrance for each suburb, its to keep the flow going smoothly. Tho from the start, having a point where car, bike and people crossing path with each other in an already high traffic area is already dangerous in itself. A bit late to the conversation, but I feel like the fact that a bike making a minor traffic violation is magnitudes less problematic then a car doing the same is not understood by most Americans. Cause minor traffic violations don't harm anyone in 99% of cases. The point is that with a car that 1% most likely means hospitalization or death. With bikes on the other hand it's probably going to be a scrape or absolute worst case scenario a broken bone. Thus I personally believe that fining of cyclists should be a much rarer occurance, only happening when serious traffic violations are made. Oh and clear infrastructure is a must obv.

Ouff, it’s very similar in Frankfurt - the flow during cycling is broken way too often, no dedicated traffic lights for cyclists and stuff. You see the sheer amount of cyclists with racing bikes? That’s the audience who really wants it. But if you really want to drive large scale adoption of cycling, you need infrastructure like here in The Netherlands. Here it is safe to bike for everyone, thus you see everyone on the street on their transport bikes, bikes with children in the front, grandmas with ebikes etc. Of course it may be a higher investment to make but if you after all win more users for the system, that’s a win. And I guess, the US health system would benefit from it.
@QemeH
@QemeH 4 жыл бұрын
To be fair, there is a metal barrier - designed in a curve - that leades BOTH directions of the bike path to the right. If you come down the bridge ON the bike path (as opposed to the pedestrian walkway), you have to swerve to the left to even be able to go straight ahead. This plus the double red "wrong way" signs are really as clear an indication as you can get, that you are NOT supposed to go there. I'm with you on a lot of bike infrastructure being poorly planned and/or executed, but the "that's counterintuitive" argument really doesn't work here - there is a metal barrier leading you off to the right, that you have to AVOID to go straight. Maybe the city could paint the barrier? (Oh and these "arrows" on the ground are clearly give-way marks just like they are painted, like, everywhere. Every 4-way stop has these, they should be well known...)

I've gotta say, as a cyclist and a driver, it is clearly labeled. When you're on the road, no matter in what vehicle, it's your responsibility to recognize road signs. A couple stickers and some sharpie isn't an excuse to drive the wrong way down a one way street, and it's not an excuse here. However I also agree it's a terrible bike lane design and needs to be changed.

It doesn't excuse the fact that there's no way forward without breaking the rules. uh, one point about the "this looks like traffic is supposed to go in this direction" thing. That's a no right of way sign. Is that not common in the US? It means that people coming into the pointy end of the sign do not have right of way. It's totally standard in Europe.
@keyboardwarria
@keyboardwarria 3 жыл бұрын
if pedestrians are crossing, i don't think it's safe to go straight. The flow of traffic is directed towards the bridge because those people won't be going as fast as people going down the bridge with momentum. Hence, it's easier for cyclists who are going towards the bridge to stop for pedestrians crossing. Additionally, it's not really a straight path because you gotta swerve to the left in order to go through the gap. Also what happens if there are cyclists biking towards the bridge through the gap while someone coming off the bridge is going through the same gap? Wouldn't there be a collision? But yea the white arrows pointing towards the gap and wrong way sign are messed up.

Here is my opinion on this.. The youtuber makes a valid point.. they should open up a passage for bikes coming down from the bridge. Its the obvious best solution for both safety and convenience to pedestrian and cyclists. Unfortunately Pedestrian got injured so cops have to intervene and shkw awareness 2) To be honest big majority cyclists don't follow the traffic rules. I see this everyday and don't get me started with the E bikes. If you sit on a busy corner and watch cyclists pass you will see all the violations. They hardly ever stop at red lights. Some of these unfortunate cyclist death are also contributed to their own riding habits. Drivers, Pedestrian, cyclists, (E-bikes 😡) all have to do their part to assure the safety and rules of the road.

Casey, counterintuitive equals massive money grabs for municipalities. It’s not an accident. Might ask him what date of the week you got your ticket? The cynic in me suspects it might’ve been towards the end of the month,where quotas for ticket issuance might have had to have been met.
@VivaFrei
@VivaFrei 6 жыл бұрын
TheElusiveSalesman They don’t refer to them as “quotas”. But it is a known fact the cities/municipalities rely on ticket revenue as part of their budget. It becomes an “expectation” (synonym for quota LOL) to issue a certain number in order to generate a certain budgeted revenue. It’s terrible. It’s just another form of taxation.

The step down only seems to make sense for a bike coming off this platform. I wouldn't particularly want to ride a basic city bike up that sloped step, though I guess I'd do it anyway if I had no other option. Also, those arrows on the pavement are kind of counterintuitive, the direction they point is the direction traffic flow comes from, I see these on Dutch streets on Google street view. So when looking straight ahead, if the arrow points towards you, you should be in that lane. If they're pointing away from you, you're in oncoming traffic. A comment here from two years ago says that this issue is fixed, so I guess I have some street view to look at.

Its a no win situation because most of your encounters will be with people who are breaking the law and want to give you their reason for doing so, when instead they should be directing that information at the ones who have the power to relieve them of their obligation to follow the law, that is the Courts. Its a job I wouldn't take on because its destined to frustrate one tremendously, just imagine having to listen to complaints about you doing your job all day long.

Sounds a lot like the design problem with speed limits. Some streets are designed in such a way that it makes people feel they can go a faster speed. Either design the street to be slower or increase the speed limit.

One easy way to finish the tickets revenue is to contest everyone of them, every single ticket so that the court room is completely full for the next 3-5 years..

i do this until the ticket no longer exists. its funny how the system works. its ultimately a waste of time. they will act as if there are no records and just find some poor sap who doesnt have the time or will power to fight the oppressors and ticket them. yin and yang. the more you realize the more it becomes one.

The cop at the end was very aggressive. Sorry you had to deal with that! Edit: NYC is my second home. I’m well aware of the talking patterns. That’s not what I meant by aggressive. I just meant that he wouldn’t let him talk. I understand why he would be like that though. He was dealing with a group of excitable people. I’m not saying it was bad. I’m just saying it makes for an uncomfortable situation that I wouldn’t want to find myself in. 😅

Show the judge, he will dismiss the ticket and someone in the traffic dept. The arrows on the ground are enough for dismissal
@MrLukassky
@MrLukassky 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you have driving licence or not, but those "arrows" mean that the traffic from the other side need to give way, not to follow them from your side. For a driver and cyclist it is intuitive in my opinion.

Kudos Casey... you handled this in a super professional and reasonable manner. A lot of people would have just verbally assaulted the cop, who probably gets screamed at all day for following the directives the city imposes on him. He can’t change the situation, but maybe enough people will see this video to help spark a change at the city planning level.

R Kaplan I mean, addressing the issue of poor traffic egress isnt a very difficult task. All the while, he did pull another 2mil(give or take) views from many people who will never be affected by NYC cycling routes, so of course he dealt with it in a calm and collected manner.

I get this a lot when I'm riding on a bike only path and pedestrians are always walking on it, nothing is ever done and it's deemed acceptable, but if I were to ride on the footpath, I'd be a criminal.

Nuno Soares tough shit. You walk into traffic and get hit doesn't get you a free pass. So the biker gets fined and has a messed up bike because two wrongs make it right?
