I go to a coffee shop that has good tea almost every day. The cashiers there know me for the most part and already know what I want when I walk in in the mornings. Before, I used to enjoy the self checkout, but having the regular community interaction is really good. When I was sick with the flu and was out for a week, the cashier that works there in the morning called to wish me a speedy recovery. That's a level of care that self checkout can never get you.

I've never encountered a restaurant with self check out (small town), but I greatly prefer self check out while grocery shopping. It's a lot more accessible to me. I'm autistic and hard of hearing, and I'm usually extremely overstimulated and overwhelmed by the time I finish a whole grocery shop, and it's very loud near the front of the store so very difficult to make polite small talk because I can't understand what anyone is saying... without staring intensely at them to lip read, which kind of defeats the purpose of small talk in this scenario. As many little things as I can do to make going to the grocery store easier for myself, the more energy I have for actually continuing to function for the rest of the day. I would feel a little bad doing self checkout at a restaurant though, not giving the employees a tip. Though I don't want to make small talk with them, I pretty much make the blanket assumption that anyone who works in customer service already experienced more than their fair share of day ruining crud by the time I interact with them and is not being paid nearly enough for that nonsense, so the least I can do is be polite and grateful and not make their job any harder than it needs to be.

It’s funny how the good acting can literally help you to visualize that the same actor is a different character.

Long story short that small chick at the the Starbucks counter had me go back in my friend's car and shed a few tears before i could complete my order. I wanted a large caramel mc frappe with extra whip and caramel. The McDonald's across the street machine wasn't working because a employee broke it somehow so we went to Starbucks instead i spent about 8 minutes trying to figure out how to order one in Starbucks language, never again

I always choose self checkout, and if there is none, you’re not getting my business.

I would have loved self checkout back when I was a barista. I like making drinks but I hated having to talk to the customers, and it would have helped a lot during rushes when we were extremely short staffed

After all that, he still didn’t even get an iced coffee 😂😭

As a cashier I personally like when people use self checkout because I can just do other things
