I just did this last week after I realized the 30-ticket commander decks I put together 2-3 years ago (and haven't played in two years) had appreciated in value to the point that I could trade them for complete sets of Theros Beyond Makeup Tutorial and Ikoria. Bots have existed as long as MTGO - I know that Cardbots and MTGOTraders were both big when I started playing in 2004, and I originally sold my MTGO collection to the latter way back in 2006. Good to see they're still around. And yes, Wizards has nerfed redemption several times over years - closing redemption windows, raising prices, and so on. Like the Reserved List, it feels like redemption only exists at this point because Wizards made a promise 20 years ago that they can't get out of now.

Arena's code is a couple pages stapled together, MTGO is more like the bucket of a paper shredder, riddled with bugs of all sorts. Luckily for the game, the simple UI is able to handle stuff Arena's dynamics can't, like 4 players games.

Good lesson Prof. I would add the following concerning selling full collections. Bots have algorithms designed to keep them in business. You need to be aware that some bots offer 20 to 40% of their sale price for cards and some offer much less. Additionally bots will discount their buy price further when multiple copies of cards are sold to them. Also, you need to shop around to get the better prices. If you dump your collection on one bot, you may not be getting the best value. They may ignore the value of lesser valued cards of your collection as part of their profit. On the other hand selling piecemeal to multiple bots has the issue that you will leave behind fractional tix in many places.

I've never really got into MTG, but I do like casually collecting some cards for their artwork. Am I the only one then that finds it odd that you pay for digital boosters to get the digital cards, *then* have to pay even more money to exchange the digital set for the irl counterpart? I can understand having to pay for shipping, but $25USD for digital cards you've already paid for seems a bit over-the-top, no?

Liked the video. I tryed to get mtgo after it just to test it, since nowadays making an account is free. The installation crashes and gives errors no matter what I do:) You mention Hearthstone's dusting, prof. As someone who played Hearthstone for 4 years after release and gave up on it, I must say that one of the reasons I enjoy playing MTG Arena is the fact that it is so easy to grow your collection and get the cards you need. Dusting in Hearthstone is completely inefficient and Daily quests guarantee you a 5 card pack each 2 days + each pack has a guarantee rare (which is equivalent to an uncommon), so you can get, and you will most of the time, 4 commons and 1 rare. In Arena, daily play gets you always money to buy 1 pack, but you also have many events with prizes (which come more often than the Hearthstone brawl), and the mastery, which even in its free variant offers a lot. Also, on Arena, wildcard drop chances are quite good, and you also get free wildcards each 6 packs. In hearthstone, you need to dust about for cards of a certain rarity to craft one of the same rarity in return, which is just sad compared to the one wildcard buys one card system of Arena. The frustration of how hard it was to build a decent collection before rotation messed everything up was the main reason I decided to leave Hearthstone for good (maybe they improved the problems since I left the game, but I'm not going back to play dice cards: the game now that magic is so readily available for free -- paper magic and other paper tcgs are mostly extinct in my country).

cool video. I've been playing mtgo since 2006. yes, "selling out" is a thing. but i have been able to pay for alot of cards by buying and selling cards - mtgo market is like um.. a stock market of sorts... the price of cards changes daily and there can be wild fluctuations of price depending on supply/demand. for example- the 'edgar markov' card when newly released went up to $35 tix or so. if you got it early before the price went up, then sell while its good you can make a good profit. now edgar goes for around 5 tix.. another supreme verdict sat for years at around 1-2 tix, but when pioneer became a thing, it shot up to around 10-11 tix. buy low, sell high..this is something ive been able to do for years and it has kept my out of pocket costs within reason. and yes by comparison...ARENA IS COOL BUT like you said it is 1 way and i cant trade nor sell my cards so it is very hard to just go out and build a new deck with out having alot of wild cards.

I hope one day they do improve the international shipping options. It would be a lot better with more sets available given the shipping cost staying the same with multiple sets, but as it is now just better off buying a box or two. I would love to redeem a full copy of each set to keep sealed but i cant do that 4 times a year. There are also so many variants in sets now that it just feels incomplete. Great for getting playsets of cards/selling off extras, but not as good for collecting

My tin foil hat tells me WotC will eventually be closing out of all redemption options, followed by announcement they are no longer supporting new releases in MTGO. You can currently get a sealed factory set of Theros: Beyond Death off Ebay for $260 (including shipping). With the outrageous $25 redemption fee per set, it's basically a wash to buy from MTGO redemption vs Ebay. It USED to be better to redeem when it was $9 for first set + $5 for each additional set. Especially when you could go back a couple of years to redeem at your leisure.

The shortened redemption make it almost useless as you can't play with the cards in Standard until they rotate and then redeemed as you have to do it about four month after the set releases and some sets are legal for 1 year and 9 months. Should be mentioned that if you want a full FOIL set this can be a good deal though. Especially if you want multiple foil sets as the shipping is the same no matter how many you order.

Play when ever I want to. Don’t have to chance wild card and open packs at random. I just go to cardhoarder and get the card I need for my decks from the latest sets. Totally agree with you in it prof! It’s much better way to enjoy magic and actually cheaper the arena!

I started magic online a few year ago while breaking up with my local commander group. 1h drive to play with people that wanted to always increase the power level of their deck and would offuscate if I tried a proxy wasn't really the experience I needed as a jhonny player liking to try several deck. I slowly built up my commander collection online, trying as much as possible to have one copy of each and every card of magic to have the most possibility out of deck building. Playing one to two game a day after works, from cedh to pure casual jank, having fun whenever I want. That is the magic experience I enjoy. My only rants about magic online is that players tend to concede really fast in commander game (a single counterspell make them quit), and the exile system that hide lands is often infuriating. Should have a way to automate combo too when people don't have answer (like creating a loop and telling the game to do it a 100 time) to fast things up on certain deck. Wish you could build a cube and share it with the community in a phantom event too, creating a pod and getting back the cards afterwards. Except that, I love magic online and will continue to support it as long as wizards will keep it alive

Wow! That is almost as easy as cashing out in an online casino. So I can buy a booster pack, open it, arrange the trade on a website, and then execute the trade on MTGO. That's like playing a game at a casino and winning some chips, negotiating a price for the chips at a corner store, and then going back to the casino to trade the chips for the agreed upon price. I wonder if Wizards has any issues with this?

As of last year I actually started playing more MODO rather than Arena, which had initially got me back into Magic. I feel that MODO, despite being a bit clunky, is a much more interactive and communicative platform than Arena. I am able to banter to my hearts content. Something which I miss very much when not playing paper magic (Yes I'm looking at you MTG Arena). Oops, Oops, Nice, Good Game! Just doesn't feel like interaction. It is the player screaming into the digital void in the hopes of hearing an echo.

I find the ugly/clunky interface of mtgo oddly comforting and nostalgic... Even though I’ve never played it until now. I can’t wait to play paper again, but this feels like the next best thing.

Pioneer will be on Arena sooner then later, i do think after a year or two also Modern will be added and so on. No one will play MTGO soon since Arena can be played for free.

it is called historic, when a card u like is not in standard u can play it in historic. So it is not a dead card as u can still use it.

Can you please include the fact that both MTGO and Arena are PC only?! I haven't owned a PC in 10 years and have no plans to buy one anytime. My Mac works fine for all my other needs.

I didn't know Magic Online was a thing. I've played Arena, but should I invest into Magic Online even if it is a little old and Arena is newer?

Ratlock is a great way to enter the competitive scene of pauper. I enjoy the deck, but you will encounter people who get upset at being locked. The Prof did a video on the deck some time ago

I'm not saying Prof has insider info or anything but this is timely advice. I don't foresee MTGO lasting longer than another 3-5 years. It will definitely stop getting updates once they've decided Arena has settled into its place, and eventually they will pull the plug

Wouldn't it be great if WotC just made these complete sets purchasable when the sets release? They're already manufacturing them for this redemption feature after all
