Want a truly affordable gorgeous cashmere sweater? Look no further than many thrift store men's racks and transform it into something amazing with this sewing tutorial. You will learn important tips on how to cut and sew an existing sweater.
Don't know what to do with a beautiful sweater that has MOTH HOLES? Let this be your inspiration to UPCYCLE. Join Jude of Threadhead TV for this fantastic remake of a men's XL cashmere sweater into a gorgeous women's tie-neck sweater.
Upper right sleeve was riddled with moth holes. Solution gave the sweater extra SPUNK.
Would have re-attached the waistband ribbing if it hadn't been riddled with moth holes. Love it without - can be tucked in without bulk. Not all sweaters can be left unsewn as they can unravel. Bottom of sweater can be turned under & finished with a zig-zag stitch or blanket stitch is even better if you have it on your machine.
Have fun reviving that gorgeous sweater of yours!

Thanks, joc0553! It made my day that this might have inspired you to upcycle the cashmere in your closet. I appreciate the encouragement and please come back for more. I'm working on some recycled denim projects...

What a fun project! Good tip with the knit interfacing. I have never used it, but as I am also gonna do some adjustments to a cashmere sweater I have been researching all the ways for the sweater to keep it's shape and have a great final result.

I will let you know if I decide to use the technique and I probably will make a video out it like you did to help others. :)

Wow, you really changed an "ugly duckling" fine sweater into a beautiful, gorgeous sweater. It looks really nice on you. You have been blessed with a nice talent. :) I am working on a beautiful pink cashmere open sweater and it is a little tight on me. I was thinking on adding other materials that coordinates with the main color to extend the width of the sweater. I hope mine sweater comes out good too, just like yours.

I have some soft knit dresses that need to be taken in. I keep asking around how to do this so the material doesn't bunch. Everyone says it's impossible. To forget it. But, I heard u mention in your video something about a "walking foot" and a "jersey knit needle" so the sweater won't bunch up. Could u please explain? What could I do to avoid bunching when I sew into my soft knit dresses? I've never sewn before so please be as detailed as possible. Thank you!!

Hi, Mich! - Thanks for watching and I'd love to help. The jersey knit needle is used to prevent putting holes in knit fabric. A regular universal needle can cut the fibers whereas a jersey needle has a rounded tip that pushes through stretchy/knit fabric without cutting the fibers. If you happen to have a serger then you don't need to worry about a walking foot. However if you are a beginner then a serger is probably not on your horizon at this moment. With a regular sewing machine, a walking foot is always a good investment. They are used for quilting, generally, but I use my walking foot for any kind of project that has bulky layers as a regular foot can cause bunching. A walking foot is also good for using over "sticky" fabrics such as leather or vinyl. They are not cheap - one could run anywhere from $30-$50 or so. Another crucial key in preventing your knit from bunching up on a traditional sewing machine is using either a tear-away stabilizer or an iron-on stretch knit interfacing in the areas you are sewing. If it is a sweater, I would use knit interfacing. If it is knit fabric like a t-shirt, then a tear-away stabilizer would be sufficient. I use knit interfacing in this sweater tutorial above. If you want to see how tear-away stabilizer works, you could watch this tutorial as an example. It is used under applique but it works just the same way if you want to make a side seam. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9OEotOXyMuVXaM.html Hope to see you back again!

Thank you for the great info! I have a beautiful cashmere sweater but the turtle neck opening is way to tight. Any suggestions? Thank you! Laurel

@ThreadheadTV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Laurel- you could try cutting off the turtleneck part and make it into a boat-neck-type of neckline. Or a scoop neck. Or even a v-neck with these same techniques. I have another video called 2 sweaters to grommet hoodie. The neckline there is essentially a v-neck without the grommets. Let me know how it goes or if you need any further input!

What kind of attachment are you using?
@ThreadheadTV
@ThreadheadTV 6 жыл бұрын
Attachment to the sewing machine? It is a walking foot. It is used in quilting to help the foot go over all the layers smoothly but it works wonders in lots of other project applications as well.
