I thought my 2nd generation Colt 1860 Army revolver deserved a better home than a crappy, black cardboard box, so I set up a cased display set with the revolver and the appropriate accouterments.
In this video I’ll show you how I did it, along with a little history on cased sets, and on the original accouterments that they contained.

My second gun was a replica 1851 Navy I received as a Christmas present in the early 1980"s, I started Civil War reenacting at around 12 years old in an Artillery unit. I have owned so many guns since then...Glocks, M1 Garands, AR's but in my old age I sit around watching KZfaq videos with a 1861 Navy in my hands. There is just something special about the old Colt designs.

Dear Dualist, back in the 60's LIFE published an article on cased Colts. Since then I've cased a dozen Colts & Remingtons bought from Cabella's and accoutrements from Dixie. Three double casings and one triple, and two with shoulder stocks, all French style. I also did my best to duplicate the Walker case of the Danish sea captain. Thank you for your presentation!

Glad you discovered Mr. Hampel's fine store. I have bought a few of his display cases in walnut and a knife display stand for my fantasy bone-handle flint blade. It is very satisfying collecting the accoutrements and assembling a beautiful cased set so I know what you are talking about. In addition, Mr. Hampel will customize his product at little or no extra cost as he did when he fabricated the display stand for my flint knife. I just made a tracing of the knife, snail-mailed it to him and Mr. Hampel did the rest.

I enjoyed this video tremendously, Mike. I bought my first box and accoutrements from DGW. Then I made 2 Black Walnut boxes for other pistols. I also used a mahogany Sterling Flatware box that I internally altered to house 2 Uberti Pattersons + 2 Pedersoli 1805 Harpers Ferry pistols. Always love having coffee + Mike in the morning.

I like presentation sets. I’d make them for all my guns but there’s no room or money. One presentation idea that was briefly popular a few years back was the vampire hunting case. It re-imagined Victorian or earlier era cases a vampire hunter might use. Or one an actor would use in a movie.

I like having mine cased. I buy a display case, marketed at jewelry display, make the internal dividers and choose / glue in the lining and have the appropriate accoutrements. I also take the lid panel out and replace with glass. It really makes a classy display. And yes, they are taken out and shot regularly.

Mike really like your channel and everything you do to educate your audience. I especially like the educational videos that you do. I would love to see you do a show or even a small series on how cap and ball revolvers were carried. With a special emphasis on all the things that were needed to load and keep them running day in and out. How did they carry all that paraphernalia with them. I hope you will consider doing that someday soon. Thanks for all you do and best wishes on your struggle with those who are trying to bring you down. Your struggle is our struggle too. Keep strong!

I do have a couple of American Civil War original revolvers here in the UK which we're allowed to own without a firearms license as they are of vintage age and i actually made my own cases out of cutlery boxes which are easy to find on ebay,....the insides taken out and compartments added covered in a fake velveteen type material and i'm quite pleased at how they've turned out. Gotta say though,..that Colt Army does look sweet nestled in that case Mike.

Amazing review. I am also of the "pistols are for shooting" mindset. But if you get a big enough collection it is okay to display some as the art they truly are. From engineering in the firearm to thoughtfully laid out protective and capable box with proper tool and bullet mold set. Great idea, too bad more gunmakers cant do this in modern times as cost is main driver. So many people can't afford much more then basics if they can even afford to be armed

Mike, This was an extremely entertaining and informative video. My first black powder weapon was a Colt model 1851 "Navy" revolver. I subsequently bought a mahogany case for which I purchased a powder flask, bullet mold, and turn screw. I shot this pistol in competitive shooting venues and still cherish the boxed set display. Keep up the good work; I look forward to your videos each week. Many thanks!

This was great to watch. I have an Uberti replica 1860 that I have gone through with a fine toothed comb and have it shooting like a champ. I was a manual machinist for 10+ years and made a cutter to make bullet moulds that would fit my gun. I'm now a cabinet maker and have a beautiful piece of highly figured curly maple that I was wondering what to do with. My original thought was a little tool chest for my reloading dies but now I'm thinking a case for my .44 would be a bit more personal. I'm also a hobby blacksmith so even if the case doesn't happen, you can bet the family farm I'm going to forge a combo nipple wrench/screwdriver tool for her. Thanks for the great content Mike

Well Mike, as a Cabinetmaker and restorer of period antiques, owner of a 1851 repro Navy and 1860 Army, some lovely aged walnut and some experience in making boxes? Ya got me goin! Now I did make holsters for them with leather I tanned wit Sassafras bark, I live in the woods, so now what? Do I have the holsters and boxes or be forced to buy two more guns or buy a 1862 police model and make a box? So many mysteries and so little time and money! What’s a feller to do? Keep on keepin on watching your videos of course for one, which are greatly appreciated! They are filled with information and history and your ole sweet self along with Adventures! Hummmmmmm! I acquired many old types of wood over many years for matching period pieces. Though I do little of this work anymore it provides me with aged woods of lovely colors. Boxes of walnut are classic but can you imagine cherry or curly maple? Okay, I’ve taken too much of your time already Mike! Kind Thanks and Many Blessings! Bye! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

That is so funny, because I think I have 38 percussion revolvers. I say I think because I work on the road and am not at home to get an accurate count so I am counting in my head and relying on a memory that is not as good as it was 50 or 60 years ago. I too have never owned a cased set, but now, after watching this, I am thinking what the heck. I may pick out either a few of my best looking ones or else a few of my best shooting ones and either buy or build boxes for them.
