Flavoring is used in pipe tobacco in myriad ways to achieve a variety of results. In this video, our head blender Jeremy Reeves takes a closer look at this idea, particularly the difference between "casing" and "topping." These two techniques, while often referred to interchangeably, are quite distinct. Tune in to learn more about how we use flavoring in our blends, along with some recommendations from Jeremy you can try today to gain a better understanding.
What are your thoughts on pipe tobacco flavoring? Do you prefer uncased, cased, or topped blends? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

I always wondered! Now I know, thank you! I prefer so far aromatics but I‘ only about 2 years in and smoke about 3-4 x a week as a “treat“. So I like sweetness and generally go for both cased and topped blends. I have tried some uncased virginias and burleys and a few EBs but so far find them more reserved in taste but I will keep experimenting. 😊

I'd love to see a video on the making of the cut. I have heard the term "pressed into cake and then spun into ribbons" I have held a large plug and spun around, I even taped it to a fan and it never turned into a ribbon. I'd love to see how that magic happens.

This is great info, thank you for explaining! I’m not the biggest fan of aromatics, but do really enjoy a few of your offerings as well as a few sutliff aro’s. I thoroughly enjoyed cased tobacco blends however. Interlude is s lightly kissed with that sweet honey, I just keep reaching for more. It ages wonderfully too! I can go on and on about your blends. I have easily over 50 C&D tins jarred and in my rotation and seriously enjoy each and every one of them. I absolutely love pirate cake, star of the east flake, from beyond is amazing. Love Latakia but also burley. Your eight state burley is delicious.

Always wish more tobacco reviews included detailed comparisons to specific similar blends. I could narrow in on blends easier with less money. (TAD issues!) Tobacco reviewers: You are a great help to our community. Please include things like, ‘This is spicier then Bayou... or This Virginia is about as sweet as Opening Night...! C&D really make great blends, I have a lot of them.

I started pipe smoking about a month ago and have smoked three times so far. I'm a bit overwhelmed and probably doing it wrong. I've never smoked before and appreciate the C&D education so much that I will make there's my test company. You have to narrow somehow. I would love a list of ~ five tobaccos that will find me my flavor preference. All opinions (and y'all are an opinionated lot) are welcome

... New pipe smoker… so it seems like what I'm hearing from you and what I've read that all tobacco's whether aromatic or not aromatic have a flavoring… whether it's casing or a topping, ...a flavor is added… That means to me at this point ...all pipe tobacco's with the exception of unflavored, untopped, uncased tobaccos... Have a flavoring added even though they are called non-aromatic… Am I correct? ...Thank you, very helpful... God is Good...🇺🇸

I have always been under the impression that autumn evening is cased as the flavoring is cooked into the tobacco while its hot, any clarification on that or has the recipe changed? Plus is burly flake 2&5 are similar component minus the topping, that would be interesting to know as i stayed away from number 5 thinking its milder in strength/nicotine. Interested to hear your feedback. As always, thank you for the videos and the efforts taken in making them. Kindest regards Al janabi

I actually LOVE Pegasus! But, I add a little Captain Black Dark to it. So in proportions aspects, I get 8 ounces of Pegasus bulk, then I'll add 2 and a half to 3 ounces of Captain black Dark from my tub. I'll then mix it really well in a big mixing bowl and make sure it is mixed perfectly. Then I'll jar it in Mason jars and let it set for a few months. It's very good, "for me". Others have chastised me saying I ruined it and I shouldn't have done that. Well, I still get the taste of Pegasus along with the nicotine buzz, but it has a fantastic room note because of the added sweeten black Cavendish!

Very informative! I've read tobacco reviews where the reviewer complained that the blend was so "heavily cased" that it stuck to his fingers. From Jeremy's description, it sounds like casing shouldn't do that. Perhaps it's the propylene glycol added to aromatics to keep the volatile toppings from evaporating off too quickly? Is propylene glycol considered a casing, a topping, or neither?
@imstupid880
@imstupid880 Жыл бұрын
It's a casing, as its primary use is an attempt to keep moisture in the tobacco in a pouch over a long period of time. However, it's also used to carry flavoring for aromatics, which is its most common use.

Would "cellaring" have any negative impact in the smokability of my favorite cased or topped tobaccos from Cornell/Diehl in the long term? Let's say I don't pop open a tin for 10, 15, 20 years. Would those added ingredients spoil or rot or otherwise foul the tobacco given long-term storage? The common thought seems to be that un-cased/un-topped Virginia, for example, gets naturally sweeter when it's cellared for years on end. Just wondering if the masterfully blended C&D topped/cases tobacco would still be enjoyable after such a long time. Thank you for the video!
