"Cuban Style Salsa" is a name that foreigners outside of Cuba decided to put to try to define the dance, since they couldn't tell what it was. The Dance "Casino" has always been a style of Son (rooted in ealier dances such Danzon and contradance) • Video . Son itself has many styles, but the one that became the most popular in the past generations in Cuba was the one done in the "Casino Deportivos" recreation places in Cuba.

Great Casino dancing! But why do you call Casino a style of Son? To the best of my understanding, Casino was initially developed in the late 1950s as an update to Urban "Son" and Cha-Cha-Chá dancing. However, while it was reportedly derived from "Son Urbano", it was supposedly a newly updated version with new characteristics. To me, calling it a style of "Son" implies that Casino was one of the traditional "Son" dancing styles that existed alongside the other "Son" dancing styles being used in Cuba. While I do have the book by Bárbara Balbuena as well as the book by Alicia Sardiñas & Alan Borges, I did not see where Casino was referred to as a pre-existing style of "Son" rather than a style that was derived from "Son" among other things. Any further explanation you could provide would be much appreciated.

Whaaaaaaat? LOL. Casino is a cuban dance that comes from the necessity of dancing a new cuban music that appeared by 1940's as a result of fusion of cuban Son, mambo, guaracha, rumba, american jazz, cha cha cha. Casino shows a few figures from cuban son, however Casino salsa is an optimized dance and it shows different styles in different parts of the island " Cuba" this one is showing an eastern cuban style.

Thank you for explaining casino clearly. You know what you are talking about.The eastern style is not very popular in Cuba. It is virtually unknown world wide. Practically no one dances eastern style in completions in Cuba. But there are some supporters of the eastern style who mistakenly think that casino is only the eastern style. They blame every other style from every other region of cuba as fake.Unfortunately for them the eastern style is not very impressive on the dance floor compared to the other styles and you cannot win a casino dance competition if you use the eastern style

@CarmeloValoy Wrong. No social dancer ever mixed casino with rumba or Orishas on a regular basis in Cuba. The regular mixing of those dances into the dance of casino is an innovation that first developed in Europe and in the U.S. and is commonplace only in the Salsa Lovers (Miami) style of casino, which unfortunately is the most widespread one nowadays. If you watch the (very) popular Cuban TV program Para bailar casino, you'll see that all couples are dancing traditional casino, which some of you would probably label as "Eastern style" or "outdated". Just check some vids out!

@CarmeloValoy Thank you for your answer! Could you, please, ask your friends if mixing Orishas with casino has been a normal thing before Cuba opened up to tourism? I've always been informed by CUBANS that it's a recent phenomenon, a fashion that developed in the US and Europe.

I don't agree with the title of the video saying that casino is not salsa. In fact quoting Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salsa_dance_%28Cuban_style%29): "Cuban-style salsa, also known as Casino, is a form of salsa dance that originated in Cuba." Another quote from www.timba.com/dance_pages/about-salsa-casino says: "Here is some ideas and concepts about what characterizes casino (what Cubans call salsa) from other salsa styles." So casino is Cuban salsa. In fact i dance Cuban salsa and the steps that the dancers do in this video are the same one i learned in Cuban salsa classes.

We would say that if you are looking at Wikipedia and Timba.com for accurate information about Cuban Dance, that is probably not best sources and we would suggest you to look at more credible ones. Remember Wikipedia is the "People's encyclopedia" so anyone who thinks has the knowledge can simply update the information. Point in Case the information is not accurate! Books and Scholar research to read and research for info: 1) "El Casino y La Salsa en Cuba" by Barbara Balbuena 2) "El Son No Se Fue de Cuba" by Adriana Arjuela Martinez, 3) recent works and studies by Yoel Marrero -- www.casinoparatodos.org/view/casinoparatodos/Articulos/en , and many others. 4) Ned Sublette "Cuba And Its Music" "Cuban Style Salsa" is a name that foreigners outside of Cuba decided to put to try to define the dance, since they couldn't tell what it was. The Dance "Casino" has always been a style of Son (rooted in ealier dances such Danzon and contradance) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbCemLOIm7HZmps.html . Son itself has many styles, but the one that became the most popular in the past generations in Cuba was the one done in the "Casino Deportivos" recreation places in Cuba. "Salsa" is a marketing term use to define Cuban Popular Music in New York, and has little to do with the complex Genre of Son as music. So Maroun, we are grateful that you have responded, I hope you can do your research to understand more in depth the music and the dance that Cubans enjoyed in their past time. ;-)

So we were dancing Casino all this time and calling it salsa. But i don't think it's a big problem to refer to it as Cuban Salsa outside of Cuba. Personally, if the dance, where i am from, was not called Cuban Salsa, i would have never known about it and gave up LA Style Salsa in order to learn and dance it. Nonetheless the dance is awesome and i find it more fun and enjoyable than LA or NY style Salsa.

Haha :) All salsa is Mambo and Mambo was born as a section in son music or rumba...and then it was mixed with jazz and swing and some european instruments and SALSA WAS BORN! :) So it is clear that all salsa is son or rumba. Az for the Cuban salsa - there are a lot of dance styles in it.

I love ur moves, and i know u are keeping it traditional dancing "contratiempo", but anybody seeing this, would argue you guys are totally offbeat (which i understand is what contratiempo does, by basically adding ur own beat to the beat). I just think if you danced with the beat more it would look nicer and more fluid. Ive seen Casino dancers from Cuba dance on beat and it looks much better musically. Contratiempo might work for some songs, but generally it looks off (as in this video).
@dccasineros
@dccasineros 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Camargo Daniel thanks for the comments! Couple of things: Contratiempo is not “adding your own beat to it”, on the contrary is the way Cubans dance Danzon, Son and later Casino, since the early 1900s until now. Before the 60s most Cubans dance at Contratiempo because that was musically in tune with the “zinquillo” (instrument used for early danzon and Son, that predates the Clave). Later with appearance of Guaracha (Faster tempo Son music), Casino dancers had to switch to a Tiempo giving that the music was too fast to “accentuate the contratiempo breaks. These days Casino Dancers in Cuba dance, a Tiempo, Contratiempo, and on 3 depending the music, and the region. In Santiago de Cuba, majority of Dancers dance at Contratiempo, while in Guantamo mostly at Tiempo, but in Havana on the 3 (many musicians will argue on 3 is really actually offbeat, but that is another conversation) Actually in the video Amanda and I dance the first part of the song at Contratiempo to acknowledge the traditional sound of Son in the music, and later when the song gets faster and lifts in Energy we switch to a Tiempo to acknowledge the change on the beat. So again if anybody seeing this would argue that we are off beat, then they might not understand the intricacies, history and roots of the where this music and dance come from, but this is the reason that we do it, to spark these questions and conversations, so that people are a lot more aware of what Cuban popular dance is. I leave you with a couple videos and examples from Cuba, so that you can see how Cubans dance at tiempo or Contratiempo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jp6RmdibrpPdZok.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kN2Ti8l5z72rp4k.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ld2RqaWIstGZcZ8.html

Daniel Camargo And I just realize that in this video Amanda and I are actually danceing a Tiempo all the time. So we are not sure what you mean by off beat. This is another example of contratiempo to a Tiempo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLaVoNOU293ShJs.html

Hi, DC Casineros (especially Adrian and Amanda) I really like your dance style here and saw immediately that you were dancing a Tiempo. I've been a dancer and teacher of timing and musicality for many years and have just retired from helping my Cuban best friend and hermanito (de una otra mujer) Airagdin Pavon More, with his dance academy in Sydney, Australia. I'd like to reinforce your comment and add more insight for those who are unclear about dancing on Tiempo or Contratiempo. Many dance students are unaware of the subtle half-notes that fall between the main notes, i.e. 8 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 6 & 7 &. N.B. to all dancers - it's important for everyone to know this about Son and Casino, especially re the conga and clave. The conga is the heartbeat pulse and hits on 8 &, ("goo goo") so when we're dancing Son we both start at "la cintura" (centre/core of the body) on the first "goo" and launch on our dominant leg. The "&" is the second "goo", so we ignore the 1 beat, then step 2,3 at la cintura. For the second bar of the 4/4 tempo we obviously step with our non-dominant leg on 4 & ("goo goo") ignore the 5, then step on 6,7 at la cintura again. In a nutshell, it's 8& 2, 3, 4&, 6,7 or goo goo 2, 3, goo goo, 6 7. The 2/3 Son clave pattern hits on 2,3 5 & 8. The 3/2 clave pattern hits on 1 & 5 6,7. (Cha Cha Cha is always 3/2 clave, Casino can be either clave pattern. Rebeca Mauleon has a very good KZfaq video where she explains that the clave pattern will depend upon and follow the melody.) With "a Tiempo", we should be feeling/stepping "goo goo 1,2,3", "goo goo 5,6,7". We hear a musical emphasis on 1,3,5,7 via the strike of the campana (cowbell) and also the guiro so they're a great help when you're dancing on 1. To refine everything further - Son launches with the first "goo", Casino launches immediately after "goo goo". Advanced and also natural dancers can dance on the 3 beat, but I find that students should master the musical patterns I've described above first. Once you understand and feel these rhythmic patterns you don't have to think of the numbers any more and your "cintura"/core will become more fluid and moveable, not unlike a metronome. The golden rule for dancers is that the music is always king and it directs your body how to move, not the other way round! To add to your KZfaq samples, I've copied a video where Moro and Yarima are dancing Contratiempo but they're definitely Casino moves except for a few seconds of a beautiful Son move by Moro. It's slow enough for dance students to observe that they're not dancing on 1. Both of them were professionally trained in Havana and Moro has danced in international shows and taught in many countries. I also recommend the timing album "Scuola di Salsa" by the Cuban DJ Berna Jam, who's now returned from Italy. He also has a great track, "Scuola di Rumba", on his album "Welcome to Salsapoli" which is excellent for Rumba classes. They're available on iTunes. Keep up the good work guys! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7t6gM6lptKWnIE.html
