Recently I found a bunch of inexpensive, analog, quartz watches at local Walmart stores and I decided to give them a try. Normally, I am more attracted to Casio's Wave Ceptor and G-Shock watches which often feature built-in atomic time receivers so that they're always set to the right time (right down to the second!). The automatic time adjustments make the watches extra convenient to use. But these watches were all so well made and were such good bargains that I decided to try them out. What amazing value! Each watch works incredibly well and far exceeds the accuracy that Casio promised (which was plus-or-minus 20 seconds per month).
In this video I give you the results of a 30-day accuracy test. At the start of the test I manually set each watch to the right time (according to an atomic time source). At the end of 30 days I recorded video of each watch ticking next to an iPhone running an app called Emerald Time. The app was showing a running display of the correct time, down to 1/10th of a second. I examined the still frames from those videos to determine how closely the watches were matched to atomic time and I reported the results. Needless to say, the results made me very satisfied with every one of these bargain watches.
If you want to go back and see how enthusiastic I was after just half of this one-month test was complete, here's the video I made at the 15-day mark. • Quartz Accuracy is Ama...
Watches featured in this video include two colors of the Casio Duro (or Marlin) MDV106, two versions of the MRW200H, two versions of the MRW210H, two versions of the FT500W and one each of the MTPS110, the MTD1079 and the MRWS310.

I love the time test Greg, well done sir. Accuracy is one of the most important characteristics of any watch. I will regulate my automatics and will obsess over their accuracy. One of my favorite and most accurate watch I own is the Bulova Military UHF.... accurate to within 10 seconds a year! The price is also amazingly inexpensive ($130 - $180) on eBay (they are out of production now, which I think is a mistake on Bulova's part.)

as I am thinking about my next watch. its nice to find your channel that majors on quartz watches, I can’t see the point in buying mechanical timepieces. I am not a collector, of xourse. I want a durable, accurate watch. I guess there are vintage quartz watches. the cost of maintaing these is likely to be minor, compared to having to service/repair of mechanical watches. I am selling my old mechanicals. hundreds of $ spent on that, instead of buying more watches, would be unattractive to me. if I start collecting. if you do videos on vintage watches, I hope you blog only about electronic models, unlike other watch channels. you speak clearly,not too fast, - no sound distorsion - good quality videos. well done ! What's interesting is that almost all of those Casio watches use analog quartz Miyota movements. Some folks consider it's a cheap quartz movement. From my experience, I can say that these movements are pretty accurate, very reliable, robust, can be easily fixed or replaced and can last for many years. And they only cost a fraction of a swiss quartz movement (ETA or Ronda).

Temperature effects the accuracy of the watch „dramatically“. They are typically tuned to body heat and will give the best results on your wrist (or in similar climate). This is why thermocompensated watches can achieve such high accuracy. 10s or 5s or even 1s a year is just wow. If even 10s a month, the watch is off by a very small percentage, image 10s a year 😳
@chadjohnson6427
@chadjohnson6427 3 жыл бұрын
And even then, some very high accuracy thermocompensated watches will STILL demand the wearer wear them for at least 12 hours to achieve the claimed accuracy.

I have a MRW-200H. I did the same test and found that when it was not worn for a month it would be 10 seconds fast. However, when worn, the temperature change from being on the wrist made the watch totally accurate - 0 seconds difference after one month.

"You will notice a screw different from the screws holding the module together. There will be only one and there is no need to remove the module from the case to get to it. I only turn it about 1/32 of a turn, or a very small amount at a time. Write down witch way you turned the screw. I read some where that Clockwise speeds up the watch. Counterclockwise will slow it back down. I do not remember if that is true or not but make an adjustment. If after the next 24 hours the set watch gets worst then adjust in the other direction for the next adjustment." This from an article RE: G-Shock models but most digitals will be similar. Fascinating! Thank you Greg, wonderful show. I'm super interested more and more in the technology. I was shocked to hear that your pieces were keeping as far as you could tell the same time on and off wrist, because from what I hear that's the majority component of all timepiece accuracy variability is the temperature variation, and for instance the new citizen watch the 0100 that keeps time to plus or -1s per year - all such high-accuracy quartz timepieces in fact - use thermal compensation of some sort inside so… Like I said fascinating! I'll now be testing all of my quartz and mechanical watches both on and off wrist. From what I hear, the industry standard is to calibrate the watch to work best with a 16 hour-per-day wear time. I'm not sure what climate they calibrate them to work best in though, obviously if you move somewhere much hotter or colder… I miss my old citizen Ecozilla that I sold, which was ~+3 seconds a month on wrist, -2 a month off, which suggests to me now that I know the 16-hour wear standard might mean the thing would've been balls-on dead accurate :O

Try this again with these watches in a year or two. About half of my Casio watches run faster and faster as the years go by. Most of my quartz watches run noticeably faster in the hotter summer months than in the colder winter months.

Yes, temperature effects quartz watch accuracy. As temperature changes, as, for example, between "wearing" temperature (about 86 F on the wrist) and "storage" temperature (usually around 68-72 F), the crystal oscillations will vary, and, with that, the rate will speed up or slow down.

Hi Greg, thank you for conducting the test and sharing the results. I did a test of my own with my collection and have a few of the same watches as you, so thought I'd share the results for a comparison. Back on July 31st I synced everything to an atomic clock. I compared to that atomic clock today (August 30th). Results: Casio MDV-106-1AVTN (black Duro) +/- 0 seconds - Maybe the movements in our black Duros were assembled by the same highly-skilled robot? :-) Casio MDV-106B-2ATN (blue Duro) +8 seconds - Surprised at the difference between my two Duros, unless wearing does have an impact - I wear the blue one a lot more than the black. Casio MTD-1079-1AVTN (bought and synced on 8/5/20) +1 second - The robot who made mine must have been having a better day than yours!

Geek central. A great wee article. I have a had a few MRW-200h watches and they were all ultra accurate and reliable. They are far more accurate than Casio digital watches. Is it the drag of the second hand that makes them so much more accurate. I notice cheap competitor watches such as Smael are way less accurate, to the point that they resemble automatic watch accuracy.

Hi, Greg! I think that using of software like Emerald Sequoia is not the best idea, due to lags (pings) between NTP server and your device. Yes, the delay is minimal, in a split second, but theoretically it is always there. In the first moment, when your device synchronized with NTP server, the time is as accurate as possible for this measurement method. Then the software will continue to count down the seconds, using the quartz of your iPhone or Android, which is not accurate. An even worse idea is to use your device's built-in clock that syncs with your mobile network GSM time. The difference can be up to +-5 seconds. Greg, let me give you advice as an absolute uncompromising perfectionist of Good Time Keeping))) The best way is to use a GPS software on your dvice. There is a variety of software for this task, for example GPS Test Plus (Android). This gives the highest theoretically achievable accuracy. The time displayed on your screen continues to be constantly synchronized with the satellite, several times per second. You also don't have to bother with the photo finish, using the third device. I turn on the hourly signal on the watch, or set the alarm for the near future. After that, with all my eyes, I look at the seconds counting on the GPS device screen, without being distracted by the watch screen. At the right time, the watch will beep itself. Good luck and thanks for what you are doing!

You can get practically perfect accuracy if your quartz watch (analog or digital) has a "trimmer condenser". A trimmer condenser changes the frequency of a quartz oscillator when it's capacity is changed. That's all. The frequency of a quartz oscillator is reduced down to 1 Hz (one second per second) in frequency dividers. Such impulses actuate stepper motor every second (or digital watch). The thing looks like a little screw when you take the back off (look it up on Google). Typically, turning it clockwise speeds it up, and counterclockwise down, at about 1 second per day per 1/6 turn of the screw. They're generally on the better older watches. Anyway, don't buy watches that don't have one, and maybe cheapo manufacturers, trying to save 50 cents, will learn to put them in.

I don't have a lot of watches from other manufacturers but my quartz-based clocks all seem to keep time in a very similar way. Some are better than others, of course. I tend to rely mostly on my radio controlled clocks and watches for the exact time so any other quartz clocks or watches are "good enough" for me if they are within half a minute of the correct time. I wish they could all be as good as these Casio watches.

No. Varies by model. Some don't claim anything and they can be 60 seconds a month. Casio's low end models will promise +/-30 seconds. Casio's better ones like G-Shocks and other decent quartz manufacturers (standard Citizen and Seiko) will promise +/- 15 seconds per month. Beyond that you're getting into very special watches that are usually well tuned and use higher frequencies or thermocompensation. Some Grand Seiko 9Fs will do 5 seconds or 10 seconds PER YEAR. Citizen's Chronomaster will do +/- 5 seconds a year and their 0100 is +- 1 second a year. The claims are almost always upper limits though like with this video and you often get better than promised accuracy. Just luck of the draw.

When you test accuracy with dozens of watches and different brands you soon discover the reality. First off - heat, magnetism, EMR, air pressue and humidity (inside the case) affect accuracy. Rule of thumb is cheaper watches are affected more. Not always but it's a rule of thumb. Most >$50 Jap quartz mvts run fast,

Hello Greg, I also use the Emerald Sequoia Time app to measure my watches accuracy. For my regular quartz watches, with second hands that beat once or twice (Bulova Curv and Lunar Pilot modules) per second, I verify that I have set the correct time visually/audibly. I estimate that I can set the watches with about .1 second precision. At the end of my testing period (week/month/two month), I round my estimate of the error to .5 second. For my Bulova Precisionists, which have second hands that sweep at 16 beats per second, I take still photographs of the watches in front of the Emerald Sequoia screen at the beginning and the end of the test. This gives me a measurement precision of .1 to .2 second. In your description of your measuring technique, you mention using video at the end of the test. Did you use video at the start of the test? If not, reporting results to .01 second accuracy is not really valid. I am sure some people reading this must think we are total geeks/nerds.

I did not use video frames (at 1/30 of a second) to verify the time at the beginning of the test because, honestly, I didn’t expect any of these watches to stay accurate to less than 5 seconds anyway, so I thought half-a-second accuracy at the start was close enough. But...

Quartz timing technology is truly amazing. But in 2022, accuracy doesn't even matter to a lot of watch enthusiasts. These folks choose a watch for a host of other reasons, with accuracy being way down the list. Many of them are "high horology" snobs who wouldn't wear a quartz watch for love nor money -- well maybe for money.

These Casio watches are not radio controlled so they don't have an internal chip to keep track of the time. They only have a super simple chip that after 32768 vibrations gives a pulse to a small step motor. If you keep a little magnet, for example within the closing flap of your cell phone case, close to this step motor, the seconds hands simply stops and will never gain that time back anymore. So who cares about about accuracy when these watches are totally unprotected against even the smallest magnets.
