I admire the care and professionalism you show to the dead. People don’t know how much work goes into preparing a graveside service. I worked part-time at a funeral home for three years, so I know how much manpower goes into this field of work. One thing I would like to ask is if you prefer steel vaults or concrete ones? The funeral home where I worked used concrete only.

@@jkdodge they ALL do NOT leak... IF... there is no damage to the unit when placed in the ground. Concrete vaults are sealed around the underside of the lid and coated with water proof material on all outside surfaces. Steel is also painted and sealed as well but micro cracks over time will lead to rusting out and failure of the water proofing and the entire unit. Concrete will not rust out. Now that said there is a concrete liner that some cemeteries use which is very cheap and only has a flat concrete slab placed on a concrete box with no seal. It is meant only to stop the ground from collapsing and not meant to protect the casket from possible water damage or the elements.

my wife asked me a question about how it was done. Now that I have seen all of the work and effort put in by the gentleman that do this work I am thoroughly impressed and I am grateful that people such as these exist to care for not only the families who have to go through the process of burying a loved one, but show so much care in the process of burying the lost loved one themselves. The people in the video are clearly professionals and have big hearts and great care for the people that they have to do this work for. We very much appreciate all that you do.

Technology. Vaults used to not be sealed like they are now. They would just drop the casket in and lower the lid down with metal hooks. Problem with that is bodies get exhumed alot for forensic examination to determine if a person was murdered or not. Being that murder has no statute of limitations, a body can be used to provide evidence after several decades. The better a body is preserved the more helpful it will be to find out if that person actually died (coroners are wrong alot). Unsealed vaults tend to flood and well, you can guess how that's going to be after 20 years.

I grew up in graveyards, my dad made tombstones for graves and I would frequently go with him to set them. I used to watch them bury people from a respectful distance then the cemetery workers would drop them into the hole. This system is labor intensive compared to 50 years ago but now one man can do it easily. Pretty good video. Thanks.

This is a complicated process indeed for this kind of grave-lowering device! The cemetery where my parents are buried and where I will be also, the vault is put in the ground BEFORE the graveside service, the "grass" is placed down, and wood is laid down around the frame of the grave, then the grave-lowering device is placed on top! The lid of the vault is kept on a truck and after the casket is lowered after everyone leaves, the device is removed, the grass is removed and the vault lid is brought up on a truck that has a crane device on it. There are chains on the crane with hooks on the end. They attach the hooks to the lips on the lid of the vault and it is positioned over the grave, then lowered down to close the vault with the casket already lowered into the vault. It saves SO much time! This set-up is far too involved but it works. I guess it depends on cemetery's preference. This might not have cost them much money as compared to the other way.

here in the uk we just have two straps, one under the head end and one under the foot end of the coffin then you have 4 bearers who hold the straps and lower the coffin down at the same time, by hand. so much quicker. ive been a bearer seven times in the past and always done it that way and it has worked excellent. i do admire the extra care that goes into lowering a coffin or casket in the US. also we dont normally use vaults. there is no need for that added expense when the casket or coffin is never to be seen again. good video on how you do things across the pond.

Lots of people have issues with accepting the notion of water and soil and other nasties reaching their loved ones in the earth. Some vaults in theory do seal the casket away from all that. But I think the vault is more to keep the grave from caving in, as it otherwise would once the casket succumbs to the elements. Will the vault last forever? Probably not. Great video!

I find it so interesting how different cemeteries do things so differently. Our local cemetery puts the casket in the vault closes the vault then lowers it using a tractor. I’ve also been to services where the vault is already in the ground and the family (if they choose to) lowers the casket into the vault using something that looks like those green straps but thicker. Then they lower the lid on top.

I take 2 of the younger generation men and they lower the vault by squatting down, then two others come from behind and take the poles and lower the rest of the way, I leave the chain in the grave. Then, unlike most services, I have the family put some dirt in. The after they leave I finish with the backhoe.

What an enormous apparatus to lower a casket. Seriously it looks a like manual escalator. The set up here in The Netherlands looks very nihilistic and much easier to set up compared to this monster. Yet the casket is equally lowered automatically with steel cables.

Wow, that was very fascinating. Most of us have no idea what all goes into setting up a grave site. Thanks for sharing that. I'll be searching your other videos, hope you've showed us lowering the casket Why are vaults required? I just feel they're an unnecessary added expense & will never decompose. Curious about your thoughts? I will say, your job is much harder than I realized? How many funerals are you able to do in 1 day? I especially appreciated your comment making sure the family doesn't see the dirt pile

How do you determine the front from back ? Thank you for making this video and sharing. I have always wondered about how this was done. God bless you both .🚏🥰🦋💐

You look at the Hinges or latch on the casket when it is Placed on the Vault. The Funeral Director will look to see that the casket is put in the Hurse head 1st. so they know the orientation when set in place.

Great video. There was a few questions people were asking. Vault already in the hole: unless it's an above ground set up like a steel vault in the video, or a Wilbert the vault goes in the grave and the casket is lowerd then the lid goes on. Most of the concrete vaults go in the grave. Just like the English language there are exceptions such as a copper or stainless steel lined concrete vaults where the family paid good money it's above ground to "show off". It's set up the same way as in the video. The steel or Galvanized vault is set up above ground. Once the graveside service is over the lid slides back over the casket and it's lowered as a unit. The steel vault acts like a cup in water it creates a vacuum this keeping everything dry inside once it's locked ....offers great protection.

Protection? From what? Surely the point of burial is to allow decomposition and return of the remains to the earth. America has so many weird ideas about death!

I was at one funeral where the hole was not big enough. When they tried to dig further, the hole collapsed on itself.
