My grandma was an Italian immigrate from a very poor family of peasants. And so when she and my grandpa made money in France they bought lots of expensive things, awful baroque furnitures, ugly marble floor, an horrifying collection of French porcelain dolls. It was sad really, because they had this admiration for rich people, and they just wanted to buy things they associated with their idea if wealth. And my grandma's cabinet was packed with Chanel and Dior skincare and makeup, she wouldn't buy anything else, I think she was ashamed of her humble background and it was very important for her to look the part of someone wealthy (she had great skin though, a huge fan of sunscreen)

Thank you so much for sharing the story. I relate so hard! My grandparents were dirt poor and lost everything - they sailed across the Atlantic on a boat and were robbed AGAIN of the few pieces of clothing they had left. They grew up SO frugal that my dad never had new items and still to this day he hoards EVERYTHTING and won’t even turn on the heater or ac- then there’s me, Who grew up seeing that and ended up a bit like your grandma. Wanting to impress everyone because I didn’t feel good enough about myself and was ashamed at school to wear thrift store clothing (we lived in a good upper middle class neighborhood but with the mentality of my parents it was hard as I compared myself to everyone else) Thankfully I grew up and found some self-esteem and came to my wits about what actually matters. And how far that money can go if it’s put in the right places, to make us happy and improve the world around us instead of just buying things that we don’t like to impress people we don’t care about. It’s not the same for everyone, and some people genuinely enjoy these things. More power to them! But the amount of people, including myself that have purchased things just to make ourselves feel better superficially to other people that really don’t care is outstanding in a not so good way. I’m really hoping that these sorts of conversations can help change that for other people so that we can focus on what actually makes us happy!!

@@CassandraBankson And thank you for sharing your experience as well, it's not something people often talk about, and I am so grateful that you were willing to make yourself vulnerable and share this with us (it means a lot, to know that someone as extraordinary, glamorous and successful as you could have a similar family history, I am moved to tears.) You are right, coming from a humble background is really something that sticks with you (in fact studies have shown that even if a family does manage to escape poverty, it takes at least two generations to get rid of the label). Very often I felt uneasy and ashamed because my family tried very hard to navigate into higher social circles, always afraid to appear unworthy, uneducated, ridiculous. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the problem, because industries shouldn't be able to prey on people's insecurities and suffering to make money. And make them feel ashamed and inadequate because they don't have buy this or that. I am proud to say that channels such as yours made me an informed, educated consumer and skintellectual, and I am now very careful about such things, I won't let them ruin my self-worth or mental when it's supposed to be about self care. Thank you for this amazing content, and the safe space you are offering us. Lots of love, Lise ❤️❤️❤️

@Trinity M I have to say I am very surprised that you took the time to watch Cass's video, scroll through the comment section, read my comment, read Cass's, and that the only thing that seemed worth mentioning to you was that I " bash French culture and porcelain dolls and baroque" ? I am deeply sorry that some of us don't hold ourselves to such an impeccable level of political correctness, and that my view of MY OWN culture was too offensive for you. So kind of you to point it out, the honor of French porcelain doll and baroque furniture is safe thanks to you, Have a good evening

I cannot thank you enough for sharing the sentiment of luxury brands tapping in the market of people's insecurities with status and wealth, this is mainly one of the reasons I find to be the motif behind each of these well known names to branch out of the fashion aspect, the fashion aspect is more like eyecandy to us and the other branches or brands they might own are just another way to market our fears amd be their product at the end of the day.

I used to work in a laboratory at a factory that manufactured and bottled some La Prairie products, and one of the perks of the job was that we could take home leftovers samples. I fell in love with their Marine Cleanser (or whatever it was called 15+ years ago). It was slightly drying, but my then-super oily skin loved it, and I knew that never in a million years would I ever be able to afford it outright, so I hoarded as much of it as I could. It made my skin so soft and clear. It was the first fancy brand I ever used (I've used other mid-range brands, but nothing that expensive), but I'm curious how an educated/knowledgeable mind would view their products.

I have an old LV bag (from a now-deceased family member). I was using it and my boyfriend’s (materialistic) friend interrupted me to ask if my bag was real. It had nothing to do with the conversation (which was about the recording he and my boyfriend were about to do) and I admit I was offended. I don’t care if bags are fake or if they’re not designer (Some of my favorite bags were, like, $15), but the implication that he even needed to know how much my purse might’ve costed to properly judge my character was offensive to me. (At least, that’s how it came across to me).

I don’t really care either, but I do have quite a few authentic leather Kate Spade bags I am very proud to say I did not pay full retail price for! And, even though I’m very much pro capitalism and I don’t think it’s wrong for a company to make a profit, It is so wrong for a company to mislead consumers the thing in there buying something fancy when it’s not.

@@elizabethfetner1473 Yes! We love a sale here! I really love some of the unique, colorful Kate Spade purses. One of my favorites is a recent-ish Kate Spade coin purse (bee) that I attach a strap to! I also use the larger purse version (but with a different strap). I totally agree it’s fine for companies to profit, but I just felt it’s a little rude to use the cost amount of a luxury item (he also asked if I bought it myself) to judge someone. (LV doesn’t do sales because of luxury marketing).

Sure, taking care of your skin is great. That said, when you're in your 20's, unless you have a particular skin condition, you don't need more than two or three very simple and inexpensive products to maintain your skin. All this twenty somethings attributing their good looks to exasperatingly long and complex routines with unnecessarily expensive products, instead of attributing how they look to their young age, well, they're all very very cringy.

I have several designer bagsThat I love and wear all the time, but that's because I truly loved the design and workmanship that went into them. Louie Vuitton and Chanel are what I'm drawn too and treated myself too. I don't plan on buying anymore and appreciate what I have, because they're so well made I'll have them forever. I do buy cheaper brands also, but when I really love a bag they don't last nearly as long and I miss them.

I am 95% convinced that he has no idea what his products are and that it was probably handed to him as a sponsorship or something. I just struggle to belive that you would need to read the name of every product and struggle reading it at that. Im not saying that you would need to know the name of every product in your routine, but not knowing the brand names except for dior seems shady

I hate how people who have never actually had acne get SO MUCH recognition and support in the skincare community.
@DanielleNicoleMakeup

For real! I am nearing 40 and STILL get acne like a teenager. I started YT last year to show people that acne is a real struggle not just for teens. That part frustrated me my whole life bc it's constantly marketed as a teen issue and your skin is not acceptable if you are over 20 with breakouts. And the ones who get recognition have no acne to begin with (usually). Ok off my soap box but agreed!

@@DanielleNicoleMakeup I feel you! I’ll be 40 in March and I had acne until age 35 when I had a total hysterectomy (I even had 2 corses of accutane, and it always came back). I have a clotting disorder so I don’t take any hormones either. I still have blackheads and have to keep up with skincare and exfoliation but the sore big breakouts are gone. I have scars and still have oily skin, but now getting wrinkles 😣

I'm sorry, but.. what's the big issue about this here? The skincare community is just a community that focuses on caring for your skin; clear skin or not you still have to take care of it anyway and people who usually HAVE clear skin can be better ambassador’s than those who do not because it usually means that the products they've used before to clear up their skin have worked. And even if they didn’t have any acne before, the products they're using to maintain their skin, are in theory, working are they not? I just think that this is a petty argument that no one really cares for.
@chelsea8082
@chelsea8082 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexandria1672 I agree! I think people just always want to find an issue with everything and complain. I don’t see what the issue is. Naturally, if you see someone with clear skin you’re going to want to ask them what their skincare routine is or what specific products they use. It’s hard using someone with acne as the face of a skincare brand because how do you know the products are working for them? I definitely agree with everything you said!

Fun facts for the people who don't follow Noah Beck ,he actually doesn't recommend his fan buying the product his used he said " I know I used expensive products and I know some people don't have the money to buy it so don't spend your money on that, I know there is a cheap good product that may work for you so don't buy products I used it may not work for you " he is self aware of the expensive products he use but I think it work for him since posting his skin Care video on Tik Tok and saying he use la Mer, the brand send him some products .

It is one thing for you yourself to feel insecure and feel the need to deck in brands. It is another for other people to judge you for it because like it or not there ARE many people who will look at people differently depending on the brands and type of clothings a persom wears. They will look down on you for dressing in jeans and tshirts even if they are clean and well kept but as soon as you whip out a fur vest or muffler they look at you positively. I experienced this and as much as I hate to say this I get why some people will choose to buy from expensive brands even when they cannot pay for it. Sometimes you're not the problem, the world is seriously.
