How To Shutter Drag Images | Photography Tips

Here are two things that you need in order to create shutter drag images. So we have my camera here and the first thing you're gonna need is a wide angle lens. So here I have the G Master 35mm lens. This is my favorite lens to use for shutter drag images. The next thing that you're going to need is a flash. And this is going to go on top of your camera. So here I have the Godox V1 flash. And you want to make sure that you're pointing this directly forward. This flash is going to mount on top of your camera, and it's going to allow you to take shutter drag images.
- In order to take shutter drag images, you have to have a pretty low shutter, around 1/10 and you're gonna point this flash directly forward. Bring your aperture high like maybe F/5.6 and when you take the photo you're gonna drag your camera in a sweeping motion like this (shown in video). Which is going to give you the shutter drag results.
Camera Settings: ISO 100, 1/10/ F/5.6

One last important tip, make sure flash power is at minimum such as 1/128th power or maybe 1/64th power. Add too much flash power with a slow exposure settings can equal an overexposed image

How are the subjects not blurred with the sweeping motion of the camera?

@@joshhart4931because it’s not drastic (movement). Also a high aperture like f/8 with a wide angle usually makes everything in the shot more in focus vs a telephoto lens.

You don’t piece them together. It’s one photo. Takes time and takes multiple photos to accomplish. If you can’t achieve it, try lowering shutter speed more.

The people are not dragged because the flash "burned" their image into the sensor. The scene in general is underexposed so the sensor doesn't get any more information from the people, but the lights in the background still shine bright enough to give some.

May I suggest using Wescott? F, J2, that is a crazy Speedway. I believe they have a little more power than the godox has

Its not a lefthanded camera. The video is just mirrored. You can see that the words Godox and Sony are mirrored.

35mm is not a wide lens

Actually by definition it is. A lens is considered wide-angle when it covers the angle of view between 64° and 84° which in return translates to a 35-24mm lens in full frame terms.
