My SA has said that they’ve been told the overall plan is to phase out canvas on everything but the “heritage” pieces (alma, speedy, neverful, keepall, hard sided) and then have some seasonal pieces that are only available for a limited time. They’ve also been told that canvas will only be able to be bought in store.

The Canvas is the backbone of the brand and always have been. I don't think they'll ever do that. I love your presentation they should Collaborate with you.

I do not think they are going to discontinue canvas. People have been saying that for years. It’s not only a huge part of their heritage, it’s also their bread and butter. If they dump canvas I’m dumping them. This was the best video on this subject I have ever seen. You are so good.

A smart and in-depth discussion about Louis Vuitton"s strategic move from coated Canvas to leather. You made a lot of good points. They will never discontinue Canvas. It is too iconic.

More recently it has been easier to pick up canvas stationery items on line (agendas, ring planners etc). I picked up the Paul and the MM rings as a result. Those are items that have routinely been mentioned online as “no longer making”. So I take the rumors with a grain of salt. I agree with your assessment Cassie. I also worked in finance for a luxury brand for ten years. While brand image is important so is cash flow. The reality is that most brands make a ton of money selling bags and small accessories to various demographics. Sunglasses and perfume too (high margins). This includes tourism dollars too. While certain high end items make the shops and ads look appealing and convey the feeling of the brand it is not necessarily those items that keep net income in the positive in a brand that is widespread and has many locations. As now a middle aged person I love canvas now, didn’t when I was younger - preferred minimal items with little branding and thought leather was the best, thought monograms were tacky. Now I love the durability and the lighter weight of both LV and Celine canvas. I love monogram now after poo pooing it for years. Love nylon bags too (Herve Chapelier and Porter Japan). I no longer covet glamorous bags like Chanel although I find those beautiful. I’ve settled into a realistic place of what serves my life best and that is hard working, light and less fussy items. So I can’t imagine canvas going away or I truly hope not as I can’t be the only one.

My monogran canvas I bought brand new in 2012 at an LV boutique cracked and peeled in less than two years. My old canvas monograms from the 1990’s lasted for years.

Interesting to see the price charts of both Chanel and LV over the decades. Interesting that the Chanel price chart starts the year of my birth. I started buying Chanel in the early 80s, while on vacations in Paris. I remember my flap bag costing the equivalent of around $680 U.S. dollars. It was a limited edition one that could only be bought at Chanel in France. I bought it at the Paris Chanel boutique on rue Cambon. Back then, I was converting from French francs to U.S. dollars as the Euro didn't exist. As for Vuitton, I went through my many years of owning Vuitton pieces. I bought mostly the monogram canvas as it holds up. The first bag was the Chantilly crossbody bag in the summer of 1980 in Paris at the big LV boutique that was on Avenue Marceau, my regular LV store. From what I remember, my Chantilly was less than $150. I still have a photo of me with that bag on the day of purchase. Throughout the years, I went on to buy a couple of Speedy bags, two Bisten (hardsided) suitcases, a briefcase, a few more handbags, and miscellaneous pieces. All were in monogram canvas. My briefcase still looks great after 40 years of a lot of wear and tear. Once I even put it on top of my car while loading my car with stuff, forgot that it was there and drove off. It flew off the car, someone on the street hollered at me, I hit my brake, picked it up, brushed it off, and it was fine. Canvas holds up. I can't even imagine it ever being discontinued as it would be a ridiculous move on LV's part. If that happened, then folks will probably just buy Goyard. My monogram canvas pieces lasted through a lot of really rugged annual overseas trips to countries/places that were hardcore along with easier countries to travel. Plus, when luggage was sitting on the tarmac in pouring rain in some countries, my clothing stayed dry inside and the canvas held up. I never would have traveled with leather in certain circumstances. Later, I also had a few Epi leather items. In Paris, around 17 years ago, I bought the Passy handbag in Epi. I had it until around 2 years ago and sold it. I like Epi, but when I took the bag out of my storage box to send to resale, the handle had stuck to the bottom part of the bag and the Epi leather coloring came off. It was as if it had partially melted. That had never happened over the previous years. I always stored the handles in a downright position in order to fit it into both a dust bag and also my handbag storage container. Greetings from Los Angeles

I think they could do something where monogram pieces are part of special collabs (i.e more expensive), and even create a scenario where they only sell monogram pieces (like travel) to VIPs who are buying lots of leather bags? Not great for the customer, but it would achieve what you are saying they want to do. Great vid as always! X

I could see this being similar to a Coca Cola “new coke” PR stunt that fails where they’ll limit canvas to in-store or reduce production, realize they’ve lost tons of $, and then bring it back

It’s maybe related to the cheapening of the brand because so many people spend a whole month’s pay (or several months’ pay, or their whole stimulus check) for a bag- people that cannot afford that lifestyle (and teens love it!) so it makes others not want it.

One of the best deals at LV is still that epi Alma BB. Got it in the Quartz color last year!

The new silhouette for the LV Favorite reminds me of Polene’s numero un design(with the 2 dimple pleats) in a more rectangular shape. The new Favorite is also more minimal like Polene. Could be due to customers in wanting a more “discreet” bag.

The LV Canvas style will never go away because its what made them world famous in the first place! I think its smart that only certain pieces will be made from the canvas style, its to compete with chanel and Hermès! The new collection is nice i think they will move away from new bags with the canvas style. The classics will remain but i think alot of new designs are on the way (without the canvas)

Cassie, don’t forget LV mahina leather. It’s gorgeous- I have the Hina MM in Galet. Looks the same as when I purchased it 4 years ago. The Pm is about $4000 now. I purchased the MM for under $3K.

I got a capucine bag about 5/6 years ago, it’s black with metal stubs on the details, at the time it was 4550. To see how much it is now…. The MINI one is that price now 🤯 now I’m glad I never got rid of it haha

I can’t imagine that they will ever discontinue canvas - it’s their heritage! I was interested to hear your thoughts on high-priced LV bags not being seen as worth the price/value as compared to Chanel and Hermes. I totally get your point, but I don’t feel that way myself. I prefer the style and functionality of a lot of LV bags in both canvas and leather, and while I can appreciate the craftsmanship of Hermes, it’s not really worth it to me personally - I just don’t love those bags enough to pay the price. They won’t discontinue canvas, they will simply keep raising the price because they know people are paying for status, not quality or materials. The fact that a mini pochette is over $1000 for the Christmas edition and ppl are still buying it, tells them all they need to know. Canvas is here to stay.

Considering the backbone of the brand is canvas and luggage (which are primarily covered in canvas) I think some aspects will continue. Interesting to see someone discuss this in depth 😊

I got my first LV bag last year and what I liked about the bag was that it's a coated canvas material and not leather because if I was to get a scratch on a leather bag I would feel horrible about it. I also don't think that they will completely get rid of it cuz they know that they have costumers that buy canvas for its durability.

Hi Cassie … here in France 🇫🇷a lot of people are convinced that stoping canvas has one main purpose … increase the prices and make the brand less affordable for a kind of customers Louis Vuitton don’t want anymore, I mean people from the Parisian suburbs who line up every day in front of the store on the Champs-Élysées. People who wear flashy brands and hoodies… it’s a real problem of brand image “image de marque” , many French people with large financial means have turned away from the brand because of these new customers from the suburbs and no matter if they bring in a lot of money, some at Vuitton want a takeover of the customer base, especially since the death of Virgil Abloh… BTW thanks for your video !! 😊

I agree, they are not going to do away with coated canvas, but they are going to limit what is coated and which styles. This is going to start a run on the preloved market. The price of the Favorite is damn near $2k.

Just got my first Louis Vuitton speedy 30 last year right before the price increase! I’m old school every since my mother had one when I was a girl I had to have one of my own as an adult and I have to say I LOVE IT❤

If I were to tell you that I bought my first alma BB in black epi leather almost 2 decades ago for just 600€, which equals to approximately 610$! Not to mention the staple speedy 30 which I bought in the brown Damier for less than 500€ years ago!! The prices have been soaring ridiculously over the last years which is absolutely insane and we cannot blame worldwide inflation issues the whole time! Nonetheless, the brand still remains a luxury brand with a wide array of products for all pockets! It would be absolutely absurd to put an end to the monogram or damier design because that is the very heritage od the brand itself! Excellent video Cassie!

I totally agree on the 3 designations of LV bags. Brilliant classification. I commented below about what my SA told me about canvas.

I buy LV because of the durable canvas. For leather I prefer YSL. I use my Neverfull now again almost daily, because it’s a perfect diaper bag and I am happy I use it again. My speedy 25 isn’t getting out a lot anymore though, so I need to change that. I still want an Alma BB in DE. But like I said, for leather pieces I buy YSL or even newer, less known brands. LV is canvas to me. But I would like an on the go in EP black leather, when my baby is ambit older. My teenage daughter is 14 and we are considering buying a first luxury bag for her. She has kept all her bags in good condition ( she is a peculiar child, lol, she still has every doll she had a child in original clothes, with shoes etc. and never destroyed a single doll )and I think a canvas bag from LV might be a good idea for an end of middle school gift, to start Highschool. I’d know it will be a piece that she can carry for years and years, that’s what I love about LV canvas.

Former LV employee here. They will never discontinue canvas. It is the bread and butter of the company. They make the most profit on it and pay sales associates scraps for selling it. They will however periodically limit the production of it to cut down on market saturation.

I agree with you Cassie! It's iconic to all bag lovers and the most recognizable even from afar but sadly the most copied design in the fake market as well. From the article I read but not sure if it's true they will only going to limit the production of canvass leather and won't be available to purchase online.

Love the analysis! LV wants to remain exclusive so it’s clever to limit canvas options that are replicated extensively. Further, they can make canvas more coveted and exclusive by limiting the products in this material.

I feel if they get rid of the canvas and raise prices while only supplying/creating with natural leather, it just might help push them into Chanel/Hermes territory. One of the biggest complaints against Louis Vuitton (from most people) tend to be "It's over priced for coated canvas, it isn't real leather, it's canvas" and shying away from the coated canvas and adopting that ultra high end (Hermes-esque) vision, it may propel them higher. Or the damage, for lack of a better term, has already been done and removing canvas now would gut their sales/profits.

The craziest one was when LV released the utility crossbody bag in canvas and a black leather version. They were the exact same price! Well In Australia it did. I went into the store to try the monogram version as it was the one I wanted but then I did almost buy the black leather one due to the mindset of "it's the same price? I get get the leather?" But the canvas was the one I loved more.

Yes they are, the keepall XS canvas versions are out of stock everywhere, only leather versions are for sale, slowly they will lessen the other models with camvas and retain the leather version

I started getting told in 2020 by a sales associate to start hastily buying certain iconic monogram items. I bought 9 iconic monogram items last year, keeping tabs on stock, and it was tricky. Everything iconic monogram is always out of stock. I have been closely watching inventory on their site weekly for a year.

I I were still in the workforce on mainland U.S. (I’m retired), I would want the Alma in Vernis. When you are wearing a lot of dark colors, the shining patent leather is the perfect glossy, classy touch. Epi has a nice gloss also. Because I now live in Hawaii, there is no real dressing up anymore, so I am buying pastel bags in casual styles. I find I am not reaching for my brown ebene and monogram canvas that much. I did get a NeoNoe in damier with blue trim, so one canvas. The other two are an Over the Moon in glacier blue leather and a Neverfull in pink empriente monogram. Bucket, sporty cross body, and a tote. LV does have a huge range of styles, which is fun.

My first luxury bag was a speedy monogram. Many years ago. Think it was around 500 dollars. Bag is still relevant and in good shape today. I just can’t see buying a leather LV bag. If it’s true they are discontinuing canvas will be good for preloved market

I purchased a speedy 30 in monogram last year. I only did that because my father bought my mother that bag in the 80’s. She carried it for most of my childhood and it reminds me of her. If they no longer had that bag in monogram, I would’ve never bought it. I’m sure I’m not the only one with memories.

LV was indeed the creator of the coated canvas, to distinguish the brand and the product from the competition, such as Goyard and Moynat, older and well established at the time. (Sorry, being a Fashion History teacher gets the best of me sometimes 😅) Those products, not the leather ones, still do it today, they are immediately recognizable as LV, and that's brand value right there, but they're also "entry level" and "accessible", which apparently isn't compatible with luxury 🤢. I'm sure we'll adjust to whatever they sell, we always do. In time, any canvas piece will probably be more difficult to obtain, and therefore more expensive, so "the strategy" works. Regarding them having more than two brain cells to rub together?!? Weeeelll.... maybe 😂😂

Great video darling! I agree, they will never discontinue canvas. However, I do believe they will drastically limit quantities of all canvas pieces. I personally do not like LV leather. I am a ride or die Monogram logo ho. When it comes to leather, I tend to stick with Dior and Hermès. ❤️

The top 50% of their market/spenders these days dont buy canvas as much anymore. Its hard to be really seen as a "loyal customers" if you mostly spend on their lower end products when there are thousands and thousands more who buy leather. The revenue share of canvas in Louis Vuitton is getting smaller and smaller each year. If anything, if they cut canvas goods outside heritage LGs, hardsides and limited edition it makes Louis Vuitton even more exclusive for those higher spenders. Their ready to wear (particularly mens) and fine jewellry is becoming more popular to sustain the brand given the price increases of bulgari, cartier, dior, hermes and chanel. LV has become that brand that people want when they want to avoid the worsening prices and services of chanel amd hermes but wants higher prestige than Gucci, prada, fendi and balenciaga.

They don't even display the classic canvas bags anymore (or at least they don't where I live). They only show leather bags + the premium canvas bags. Another persistent rumour is that they are phasing out Damier Ebene instead, which does reflect in the offerings - they have so so few bags in that canvas now - but that is so sad too since that is the original canvas design.

It seems LV will take the Goyard approach and only offer them in stores which, inevitably, will limit availability. I also think it has nothing to do with stopping replicas because it is likely much easier to replicate a leather bag (Taurillion) than coated canvas. ❤ appreciate your thoughts as always!

I was told in the milan store that I would be a VIP customer if I just added 1 leather bag to my purchased list, because they dont rank the monogram items that highly. so basically the more leather items you buy from them the more you are a valued customer. which is a shame because i am a monogram FAN, and i have full stationary sets of the monogram, travel items, daily bags, you name it. I'm however not the BIGGEST fan of the capucine or the other full leather bags, but hey guess I gotta buy one if I want that VIP treatment 🤣

I totally put LV bags in the same 3 categories you just did. I don't know if the Capucines is going to catch on... it feels so forced. I do love the thing they have going on with collab collections though, they should keep on that train.

I had an inkling this might happen when they made canvas SLGs impossible to find in-store/buy online a few years ago. It makes sense from a monetary sense because leather bags probably have a higher margin, but I don't think it's a good PR or strategic decision because LV started with canvas and it's their bread-and-butter type of product that will always sell and will always bring new customers to the brand. I just don't think that new customers are going to be lured in by empreinte the same way they are lured in by canvas.

Since I don't buy LV bags I never knew these classic bags were coated cavus and not leather. I've been schooled today. :)

The new Favorite is NOTHING like the original - it's trapezoidal, rendering the contents more difficult to access, it has a latch instead of magnetic closure, and it's got a larger heavier shoulder chain. Frankly if they released the original favorite style in leather I would purchase it in a snap. I have many leather bags but always grab my canvas ones because they are lightweight and easy to use.

Interestingly I own a few lv pieces but the classic monogram has never appealed to me due to all the fakes

Yeah, I have been really thinking about a speedy b 25 or 30 for the past 2 years. I have decided to finally pull the trigger for my bday in April and I have to replace my key pouch. I sold 5 LV bags and 2 slgs and I think with just my neverfull, my push present, and my speedy B, I think I will be done with LV. I had their leathers and I didn't love them as much as I wanted to. I am flaky when it comes to other bags so I don't think I will go for anything else from another luxury high-end brand. Lost too much money by selling all my bags.

What I have heard from CAs is that the canvas will only be available in store and not available for online purchase. They are really pushing their leather bags

Love LV as it was my first luxury brand, with Fendi being my second luxury purchase. I’m not a fan of the Capucine style. Guess I will be saving my $$$ for a Hermes Birkin!
