This movie saved my life 3 years ago. For some context, I got my girlfriend pregnant at 17. We decided to keep it so I dropped out halfway through my junior year and got a job at my family's garage. We had the baby, a beautiful boy, but his mother died during the birth. I was distraught but I was determined to stay strong for my son. Things began to get better but that was cut short when my father died in a car accident. Then, a month after that, my son died in his sleep. It was one of those cases of SIDS, and I'll probably never know the cause. I had nothing left and I wanted to end my own life. I hadn't decided how I would do it, I just knew I would. Some school friends of mine were going to a 20th anniversary re-release of Cast Away and I asked them if I could join them. I knew it could be the last time I saw any of them. I didn't plan on this movie saving my life but it did. It taught me that no matter what life throws at you, no matter how hard it may seem, you gotta keep going. I finished high school online and went to college to study film, which is what I had planned to do before all this happened. I've started seeing a girl, just a few dinner dates so far, and I haven't told her what happened yet, but I will soon. I don't know yet if I want another child and I think it will take me a long time to decide. Those few months I had with my son were the greatest of my entire life, but I never want to experience loss like that again. I keep a photo of him with me wherever I go, and I've purchased the plot next to his grave, so that whenever I do pass, he'll be with me till the end of time. I don't know where life will take me, but I know I would be dead if I hadn't gone to see this movie on Christmas Eve 2020. Thank you Robert Zemeckis, William Broyles Jr. and Tom Hanks. You saved my life.

I lost everything including my entire family a week after turning 18. I was homeless for a short stint. When I got on my feet, I moved into a place and didnt have cable or internet. I didnt have a car, but wanted to attend college...I would walk 2 miles one way every other day to get to class. At home, I watched this movie constantly along with a few others. I'm now a post graduate with a Master's in Public Administration. I have worked multiple admin jobs, trying to help anyone in a bad place like I was. This movie was *my* package with wings. **EDIT:** A year later I came back to watch this clip after I just recently hit a big milestone that I thought I would never reach (I bought my own home after struggling for 2 years). I saw my old comment and was shocked by the likes. I'm not really into clout, but it truly shocked me how many people read something that was so personal to me, and took the time to either like it, or comment and share a sense of compassion. I went through every single comment, and it made me tear up. Although this is a big moment in my life, I don't have family to share the news to....but coming back and seeing all of the unexpected support from my original comment made me realize the world isn't as lonely as it makes you feel at times. I lost my wife to cancer in 2013. Eight years of treatments and remissions of ovarian. Scenes like this resonate deeply with me of course. They speak to us beyond words, which is why there are few spoken. Even her directions are spare. Her manner distinctly friendly yet unintrusive. She seems to sense the situation, as they say. I’m an artist also. Have been all my life. The wings are both obvious yet open to interpretation in her work. The fact that she drives away leaving a wisp of dust “shows the way” whichever way he goes. Her loveliness hangs in the air. Wry honesty too, which both appeals to him and makes him wonder. What comes next? In my case I found love again. A woman that shares my interests, and I hers, as did my first wife. I’ve been at that crossroads. Essentially we’re all there at many points along the way. A sense of wonder is mostly what keeps us going.

Yeah some people confuse this as an open ending. Chuck looks at each path of the crossroad and settles his look toward where she went and smiles. He went back. Plus, there are so many hints that point to them hooking up. Her husband cheated on her and his name is now removed from the ranch. Chuck lost who he believed was the love of his life and now only had his one purpose left which saved him, delivering that package. Which happens to belong to a recently divorced beautiful woman who is friendly, if not even flirtatious with him in their short conversation. The entire movie builds up to this.

Ok, final scene, on a lonely coast a classic truck suddenly appears after moving along one of those routes indicated on that cross roads where a wonderful blessing has occurred, oh yeah! and well there they arrive, a dog, a guy (who got that toy story cowboy's voice and a FedEx hat) in the arms of a cute sexy redhead wearing a hot bikini printed with nice angel wings and so then they can join anyone better than Wilson!! who has survived and traveled nautical miles to exactly the same point where they could finally be playing beach volley together happily! and all this happens while they contemplate the ocean and listen in a very chill way to Elvis in the background !! .....

Whether he goes back to her (my belief) or does not... he finally has options, considerations, and a future feeling more under his control. The "secret" is that he always had his future under at least some control. He persisted. He made fire. He braved the ocean. He stayed true to his strong will. ... ... would've loved to see a sliver of him rolling back onto her stead and starting a dialogue... one that, in my mind, happened.

I was on a road trip with my two boys and one of their girlfriends in 2015, and I sprung on them the notion of seeing this exact spot, which I had already found via the Internet. And this location is very much like the movie portrays it. In the middle of nowhere. And if you go down that dirt road the way the hot gal did, after about 2-3 miles, including going through some grazing land and very possibly encountering cattle, you come across Arrington Ranch, which looked very similar to how it looks in this movie. The only significant change is that there are a lot of windmills in the fields now. It was a thrill for me to see the place though because this movie really pulls my heartstrings. I parked my car just like Tom Hanks' jeep was parked, and I basically described the scene where the hot gal drives up. The kids were a little ... patient... about my interest in the place but they did think enough to buy me the movie for Christmas that year! And of course we watched it together.

@TJD 512016 I somewhat agree. Life re-invents itself for so many people, and it doesn't take being stranded on an island for that to happen. It is true that his former life is a memory now, but that is life. I have had my life altered severely by certain events, and I never thought I would recover. No matter where life brings us, we must always try to survive and never lose hope that it will get better. It may not always seem at the current moment, but better days will be ahead just as long as we do not give up. Better opportunities are waiting for us in the horizon. That is what the movie is about. For me, the Island is a methaphor of our lowest point in life, where nobody can really help us but ourselves. 10 years ago, I suffered clinical depression in a foreign country. I started developing an alcohol habbit which soon became an addiction. I remember gulping as much as I can to feel numb, and drinking some more to stay numb, but when my body cant take it any more, Id throw up in the toilet and sob myself to sleep, feeling all pathetic and weak for not being able to help myself. That was my Island. Recovery did not come easy. I had to live 5 minutes at a time, until I learned to take steps one day at a time. I started focusing on my health. I worked out, and I also tried to be good at my profession. I started finding a purpose higher than myself, and eventually opportunities in the horizon did come for me. I still have to fight relapse though from time to time.

We, the good guys, do lose in life too. I've tried hard, over and over, and still lost the greatest love I ever had. Life is never fair, and most often, cruel and unforgiving. I never gave up. At one point I was lucky enough to learn how to live for others. This scene really meant a lot to me.

She was in a relationship but the hubby left her . In the beginning of the movie you can see that the name on the top of the arch at the front gate is " Dick and Bettina " and at the end when Tom Hanks brings the parcel , we see that only " Bettina " is over the arch and " Dick " has been removed . Tom Hanks and Bettina are both at crossroads where they've both lost partners in a relationship .

There's more to the ending where Bettina sends a letter to her husband who's in some other country where she tries to rekindle the dying fire of their love but i think that the husband doesn't reciprocate . I watched it a while back so have forgotten all the details of the explanation .

What the fuck are you smoking. You are the front line of "Give anyone a free pass of any load of Shit" You Missed the mark on the ending of this movie so much. The last part of the Movie had Nothing to do with the woman. It was Just One more crossroad for Toms Character must Cross. It started from the Plane crash, making his way up the mountain only to find dead friends. Wilson was a play on his loneliness and isolation. The loss of Wilson was fear of more of the same. The only thing the woman was at the end was a way for him to move on Like his wife did. OMG Try watching the movie from the start, ugg you used the word Obscene.. in this movie. I feel sorry for you.

@@mudemmeonick In my case, I met a wonderful lady, We married and together we built a new life that happily includes my late wife's grandchildren, who became for me the children I never had. Now I am a proud great grandpa. In my new life I have had the privilege of sharing the path to adulthood of my second generation of grandchildren. Their visits to our small farm have been an enriching experience for all of us. Shepherding their paths to new experiences, sailing, fishing , shooting, flying, handicrafts, farming and go karts for both generations. Their delight in discoveries with us is a joy for me. They had great fun hatching and raising our chickens but did not know what to make of hatching snake eggs. Now, with the passage of time this generation of grand children is entering adulthood. It will be fun to be a great grandad to another generation. Now, it is my turn with the Big "C". The prognosis is over 5 good years.
