Cast Iron Plants Are Perfect For This Space - In this video, I plant three Cast Iron Plants in a shady space in my backyard. They are evergreen and will only get about 30 inches in height. It will slowly spread out over time. Cast Iron Plants can be dug up and divided in the future.

A great plant that has gone in and out of fashion over the years. I am never without the species in my yard and in the house. Big fan of ‘Variegata’, ‘Asahi’ ‘Milky Way’ and Dr. Yakois Stars ’ ‘Ichi Moro Jo’ et al

I am about to plant several in a bare spot on the side of my house. Tampa area very close to saltwater. Will be in a very shaded space. Area had been soded with Bermuda grass with sand underneath. Grass is dead. I'll add some cardboard for the weeds and then good soil but I am not sure about the sand underneath. Don't know if it will cause issues. Should drain well at least.

We have had one in a pot in both Seattle area and now moved it to Southern Oregon. It’s doing great by the front door in full shade. It seems to thrive on poor care! Lol

Very informative video ! I am about to buy one of those to plant it on a shady space on my garden in a pot! I live in Greece so I think it will thrive in the Mediterranean climate.

Do you recommend cutting them back to the ground when dividing and transplanting? Thanks Jim.

Can I take some leads from the root to restart this plant in other areas? We have this plant in front of our home but want to add around the base of some trees

Can I use milorganite on cast iron plants or do recommend a 10-10-10 slow release fertilizer?

I have a bunch of this under oak trees, but all the end look frayed or burned how can I fix them?
@soccermom1245
@soccermom1245 3 жыл бұрын
I am replying to your older comment about cast iron plants looking burned. In my experience any full sun can burn them. They are shade lovers, maybe a bit of dappled shade very late in the day. If your plants are in the full sun, they are easy to move. They will bounce back and regrow in the shade.

Shady meaning under deciduous trees and shady in the summer but not in the winter? Or requires shade all year round, like evergreen shade? Spot I have is under some Sugar Maples on the west side of a house. Super shady in the summer. Part shade in the winter. Would cast iron be a good fit? Zone 8a

There's one of these planted downstairs and I want to get a piece of it. I'm guessing a little old lady use to live in the apartment below me a long time ago n planted this in the ground 🤔 I'm just trying to figure out the best way to do it.

Jim, you have read my mind. Trying to plan my beds. I am lucky that I have both shade and sun areas. Can I get at a big box store?

I’ve personally never found them in a big box store, not in my area at least. I’d call around to any local nurseries in your area.

Would this survive in a full shade area, not super deep but never gets direct sunlight on the north side of my house, I'm struggling to find things to plant there.

+landipan Yes, but I always say start with one and try it for a season if it is a difficult space.

I live in East Texas, Zone 8b or 9a and they only do well in heavy shade, if in the sun the edges of the leaves turn yellow and brown. Some plantings under deciduous trees look bad after a winter of sun, but those in the shade look a nice dark green. I really like all of Jim Putnam's videos, he is a great gardener in my opinion and have learned a lot from him.

Cast Iron Plants are hardy in zone 6? Let alone that, evergreen??
@achilleuspetreas3828
@achilleuspetreas3828 3 жыл бұрын
Yep...I have 3 of them in one of the coldest spots of my garden in zone 6a and they do great. In bad years with no protection they're deciduous but they come up a nice size still. Snow cover, leaf mulch, or burlap covering the leaves will have them stay bright green throughout winter. Winter sun and wind seems to give the leaves damage like most broadleaf evergreens
