Very informative video as always Stephen. It sure would be cool to go back and talk to some of the people that were making CI a hundred years ago and figure out if it was just great marketing strategy or if they had some other method to their madness. Awesome as always thank you.

Apart from a 5 being bigger than a 4 there's not much rhyme or reason to the numbers. It gets even worse, even from the same maker, a #8 skillet, dutch oven and chicken fryer were usually slightly different sizes even though they're all #8's. :)

Now I know what the numbers don’t mean. Not sure I understand what the numbers do mean. But no judgement!!!! :D

The numbers do correlate to heatring and stove eye inches but it is a ballpark reference at best. It looks as though that line was edited out of the video. Sorry about that.

Thank you very much for this excellent video because the number markings on my Lodge skillets made no sense to me. I will also try your sizing product. One suggestion on the video, please have the camera on the skillet as you are measuring it. For example, I had no idea where the heat ring was or how to measure it from point to point, even after you mentioned it because the camera did not show what you were doing. Just a suggestion and again thank you.

@castIroncookware

The dots are widely accepted as being shift marks the denote when the production done. 1st. 2nd. or 3rd. Shift production.

The most frustrating thing about cookware through the ages: they'll tell you the size of anything _but_ the cooking surface...which is the only size that matters to me.

Steven is there an email address that I could send you pictures of my grandmothers skillet? It doesn't have a company name on the bottom, outer unbroken heat ring, fairly straight sides, with the letters C F on the bottom and 8 on the handle. No country of origin markings, smooth interior bottom, nothing distinguishing about the handle. I think it might be old but we use it all the time. It's really a pleasure to cook with. I'm just learning but I'm getting into this cast iron thing.

I must admit this is all somewhat confusing. To me, where markings are says more than what they are. Sometimes it's hard to find two pots alike. I have many pieces of cast iron but only five in the BSR family, which have been in my family since before I was born. I have BSR, an old Lodge, a new lodge, and Taiwan. I love my BSR because it's so light. I also love good stainless steel but have grown to hate all the nonstick pots and pans that just won't hold up to cooking. I spent much of my last day researching the pots I have. It's weird, I have a 20+-year-old dutch oven by Lodge but when I pull it out there are almost no markings and only I know what it is because I bought it at Walmart. What I learned in the past 24 hours is all my old BSR/Lodge with heat rings are before 1930, I think, and those without are after 1930. I will probably buy a couple more pieces and reseason everything with Easy Beezy. And Steve, like you I plan on ditching my old glass top stove and going back to gas because it's faster and better than electric. I've always followed all the old-school methods of caring for cast iron. I've always used lard for pot storage.

It sounds as though you have pieces with a lot of memories and history involved. New and old alike.

@@castIroncookware I have BSR 8M, 3, and Lodge 5 SK MADE in USA D (STAMPED 3 on handle)all with heat ring. I was raised eating from these. I found a BSR 8 Chicken Fryer in my Grandma's house. I believe it is a later pan she never used, is a spinner, and has a slag mark or mold mark on it that is very noticable. After watching your video I purchased a BSR Cornbread Skillet Pat Pending from Colorado. Also, 2 Easy Beezy sticks. I have an old sharecroppers black wash pot used by my Mother's family. They were originally used to boil lard or wash clothes. All this is so fascinating and from a simpler time.

Hello. I can tell you have never used an antique stove. Just FYI....there will never be smoke come out of the stove itself. Even if you left all of the eyes off of the stove any smoke will still go out the flue. If it doesn't then the stove doesn't have a proper draft and you have major problems.

My friends family cabin (he passed in 2017) is 10 miles south of where my parents live, in northern Wisconsin, and I'm still friends and talk to his parents. I never paid any attention to the stove or the cast iron that we used when we were young, till about 2002,but it was so neat as its a step back in time and they have a multitude of cast iron pieces covering the wall behind wood stove. Last year I made a point to inspect the old cast iron there,as I just never paid attention to it. It was fascinating!!! I don't know my vintage stuff, besides the skillet I inherited from my grandmother, turns out it's an unmarked Wagner! !! But there is some REALLY neat pieces including an EXTREMELY fascinating just wild and in exellent shape DUTCH OVEN!!!!! Wow, it is so cool, i have never have seen anything like it before! I did take some pictures I am gonna try and find on my phone now. I am going to text him this week to let him know I would like to stop by soon as I wanna take a better look at the cast iron pieces,have him tell me his history and knowledge of them, AND I wanna take a good look at the stove as I just never thought of these things! Sorry for such long wind!

Can I recommend on next video maybe include how to adjust throttle on a 3.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine? That way people that click on something labeled cast iron can receive info on three topics, Iron, religion and small engine repair. If you're feeling antsy, maybe even throw in a recipe. Those darn cast iron people have time to waste on off topic strayings

You're going to tell us what those numbers on the bottom of the cast iron pan means, you talk about everything but what those numbers mean. Let's get our measuring tape out and measure because it has nothing to do with those numbers. And now let's talk about the old stoves, which again have little to nothing to do with the number on the pan. Are you starting to see why your channel Tanked?
