Yes, I agree 100000%. I was watching the episodes when Castiel let Lucifer use his vessel and it breaks my heart that he went into that thinking he was expendable. He is everything but that and deserves so much more than he was given.

its so sad he deserved so much better. i loved the confession scene and all but this is cas like he deserved an entire episode dedicated to him if he was gonna die, let alone be in the finale. it’s so sick seeing this show do their best character so dirty so many times :/

For me, the final actually fixed the injustice done to Castiel’s character in 15x18 in which the writers made him sacrifice himself for the man that has spent nearly a decade abusing him, made his entire existence about his that man before killing him off to spend the rest of eternity reliving his regrets. What we learn in the final, however, is that Castiel was resurrected by Jack, his beloved son, and has helped him fix Heaven. He could have visited Dean while he was alive and he could have greeted him in Heaven but he did neither, so it seems he finally came to his senses and moved forward from the toxic and abusive relationship and lived happily ever after with his beloved son in Heaven as a benevolent angel watching over humanity like he always thought angels should. I couldn’t have hoped for a better ending for Castiel.

@@Fark2005 why do you think Cas and Dean’s relationship was abusive lmao? obviously it was far from perfect but I think under the circumstances they were living under, and the fact dean was human and cas was an angel alone, it’s impossible for them to have a normal relationship. i agree it was sweet for him to be resurrected by jack and it was great for them to rebuild heaven together, it’s totally fitting for cas’ character and it seems like something he would really want to do. but he was still done so dirty in the finale by not even being in it, or mentioned at all. he should’ve had died at all and he should’ve gotten a much more put together ending. but if he had to die, i don’t understand what’s wrong with him sacrificing himself for the man he loves.

@@gracesara6611 Because throughout the show Dean displays a consistent pattern of abusive words and behaviours - in particular using emotions to criticize, embarrass, shame, blame, and manipulate - to control Castiel, wearing down his self-esteem and undermining his mental health. - Dean always expects/demands for Castiel to be at his beck and call and cater to his needs regardless of what Castiel is doing or wants, and makes unreasonable demands: 6x06 -Dean is angry at Castiel (who is fighting a civil war in Heaven to prevent the apocalypse) because he didn't show up sooner: "I -- I've been asking you to be here for days, you dick!" 6x07 - Dean thinks Castiel should simply go to Hell and get Sam’s soul out of Lucifer’s cage in spite of knowing that to get Dean out it required laying siege to Hell. “Well, then, just get it back.” 7x21 - Dean is angry that a mentally ill Castiel can’t help them the way Dean wants him too. "No, I want you to button up your coat and help us take down Leviathans. Do you remember what you did?" 12x19 - Dean is mad at Castiel (who had gone to Heaven to search for answers regarding Kelly) because he didn’t answer his phone. “Where the hell have you been? And why have you ignored our phone calls?” - Dean often invalidates Castiel by undermining or dismissing his perceptions, requests, wants, and needs as ridiculous or unmerited. He refuses to acknowledge or accept Castiel’s opinions, concerns or ideas as valid, and has used character assassination to basically, say that Castiel is not a good person: 8x22 - Dean is mad at Castiel for trying to do the right thing instead of doing what Dean wants him to do. "Yeah, you always do." 9x22 - Dean is angry that Castiel has gathered a following. "Cas, I know you try to be a good guy, okay? I do. You try." 10x09 - Dean act flippantly when Castiel for asks for help with Claire. “This is why you called us? This is your emergency?” 14.20 - Dean isn’t interested in finding another way to deal with soulless Jack. “Well, there's not. Now, I know you don't like it, and I don't really care. 'Cause you just heard it from God Himself that this [picking up the Equalizer] is the only thing that can kill Jack, so either get on board, or walk away.” 15x01 - Dean does not understand Castiel’s unwillingness to work with the demon parading around in his beloved son’s corpse. "We can handle the evac, so why don't you grab Crowley Jr. here and get whatever he needs for his spell?" 15x03 - Dean accuses Castiel for being the reason things go wrong. "Yeah, why does that something always seem to be you?" - Dean has drastic mood changes or sudden emotional outbursts 7x21 - Dean is angry at mentally ill Castiel so he pounds a fist on the table and angrily swipes a board game to the floor. 13x18 - Dean is mad about Castiel and Sam using Gabriel’s grace to heal Gabriel because now they can’t reopen the portal so he has a temper tantrum and throws things across the room. “If we can’t open the door, then I should’ve never come back!” - Dean is a frequent user of emotional blackmail to control and manipulate Castiel, punishing him by withholding affection or giving him the silent treatment, making him feel guilty, exaggerating his flaws, and make threats towards him or Jack: 6x20 - Dean is angry that Castiel will continue with his plan to stop Raphael. "Or I'll have to do what I have to do to stop you." 8x08 - Dean gets mad at Castiel for not being subtle. “No, you were being bad everything.” 8x22 - Dean is mad at Castiel for not trusting him with the angel tablet so he first ignores him, then refuses his apology and belittles him. “So you can take your little apology and you cram it up your ass” - "Yeah, well, you know, even banged up, Sammy comes through." 9x22 - Dean is angry that Castiel has gathered a following of angels to oppose Metatron. "And the last time you had this kind of juice, you did kill humans and angels, and you did nothing but lie to me and Sam about it the whole damn time!" 12x10 - Dean doesn’t want for Castiel to finish his meeting with Ishim and barges in, careless of how his behaviour reflects on Castiel, who had promised to come alone. "Feel a little left out over there. Scoot over." 14.20 - Dean threatens to kill Jack, whom Castiel loves as a son “He's dangerous, Cas, and you knew it! You've known it for a long time! But that's okay. You know why? Because me and Sam, we've killed just about everything there is. And this -- Jack -- oh, we'll find a way. Because he's just another monster.” 14x18 -Dean is mad at Castiel for not warning him more about Jack. "But I swear, if he did something to her, if she is -- Then you're dead to me." - Dean acts superior and entitled - he belittles Castiel’s accomplishments, treats him like an inferior, makes jokes at his expense, talks down to him, is condescending, makes use of put-downs and degrading comments, and is generally of the opinion that Castiel’s opinions, ideas, values, and thoughts are stupid/illogical: 6x19 - Dean derides Castiel when he’s unable to use his powers. "Well, that's great, because without your power, you're basically just a baby in a trenchcoat." 6x20, 7x01 - Dean considers Castiel’s decisions and actions to be that of a child (even though he did effectively put a stop to a second apocalypse). "You're a freakin' child, you know that?", "Cas, you child. Why didn't you listen to me?" 8x10 - Dean mocks Castiel when he needs his help to save Samandriel. “Come on, Cas, I thought you were a hunter now.” 9x06 - Dean mocks Castiel for working at a gas station in spite of knowing that he is fairly new to being human, is homeless, has little understanding of cultural and social norms, has no experience working a job, and no recommendations. “Wow. So you went from fighting … heavenly battles to nuking taquitos?” 9x21 - Dean derides Castiel who has managed to gather a following of angels and scoffs at Castiel’s desire to find a diplomatic option for getting rid of Metatron and stop the violence. "Yeah. No, we get it. You're a rock star.", "Good luck with that." 12x10 - Dean is mad about Castiel breaking his deal with Billie. “Gotta make sure you don’t do anything else stupid.” A person does not need to exhibit all of these signs to be considered abusive and these could even be considered isolated incidences of toxic behaviour in an otherwise positive relationship was it not for the fact that Dean is repeating this behavioural pattern through many seasons which is what makes it abuse (and Castiel isn’t the only victim, Sam and Jack are as well, but that is another discussion). Castiel’s relationship to Dean is basically: to be on Dean’s good side, and receive love and affection, Castiel needs to be strong enough to be useful and follow Dean’s every whim. If he becomes too powerful and/or wants to do his own things, Dean considers him a threat or a liability. And if he gets too weak, he’s a “baby in a trenchcoat” and can be discarded. This leaves Castiel constantly struggling to find a place to reside on Dean’s spectrum of usefulness, which it is shown to fluctuate depending on Dean's mood and the current state of the world, so that he may continue to be the family Dean claims he is. I think that it is impossible for them to have a normal relationship, it just requires for Dean (because Casiel has done his fair share if you look at how much he’s changed over the seasons) to actually try and do something about his behaviour (which the show makes clear several times that he is aware of, is remorseful and hates himself for) instead of wallowing in self-pity and making excuses for himself. I agree, Castiel and Misha Collins was done dirty by not appearing in the final, but when I look at the way the writers blatantly assassinated the character in 15x18, I’m very pleased with what we got.

@@Fark2005 first of all wow LMAO i might not agree with everything you said but that paragraph was true talent and so well written I can tell you’re passionate about this and after reading that honestly, with good reason. There’s no defending literally any of Dean’s behavior, everybody knows he’s been through a lot and deals w a lot of shit yeah yeah but like you said it hardly improved throughout so many years, even when given so many opportunities for growth, unlike Cas was constantly changing for the better. I’ve always believed Cas is so much kinder to Dean than Dean is to him, and their friendship (Sam included) is not mutually beneficial whatsoever. But that’s kind of the beauty of it. I guess you interpret is as toxic or abusive, which I honestly understand a lot more now, but I see it more as as complicated. I think a lot of the time Dean expected so highly of Castiel and was so cruel to him when he was powerless because he liked the security of having an angel around, and saw him as kind of invincible even though he wasn’t. he’s been a horrible friend a lot (especially the time cas was human and dean kicked him out, it literally makes my blood boil) but he also clearly loved him and cared about him too. he freaked out on him whenever he went MIA or didn’t answer his phone because he was worried about him and assuming the worst. He barged in on his meeting with Ishim because he didn’t want him to make anymore bad decisions that got him hurt. Even when he found out Cas had betrayed him, he tried to reassure him and tell him they can make things right and help him undo his mistakes. in that one episode in the motel room when cas was distraught Dean immediately became concerned and tried to get him to open up. I haven’t watched the earlier seasons in a while so I can’t think of a lot more but I truly do believe Dean loved him too. Every time Cas died he had a breakdown and in the last season he literally offered Sam and his own life just to have Cas alive. He’s said so many times he would die for him and considers him family. Dean is the most emotionally unavailable human being ever and I think Cas loved him enough to deal with that. He always came around in the end and apologized, or forgave. Cas’ ending in 15.18 was so not perfect but I understand it. I don’t think it was the writers purpose to demean him into just being a stepping stone for Dean, although it could’ve came off that way, because it was only Cas speaking in that scene and he was speaking his truth. It wasn’t just about Dean and him loving him. It was about Castiel, who was supposed to just be an emotionless angel statue and not care about humanity, had grown to be capable of emotions and caring and love, and saw so much light in one little human that he had became capable of loving it against all odds and would die for it. It’s such a 180 from where he started. I think it was kind of beautiful.
