*HEAT THE SAND BEFORE POURING THE COPPER* You heat your sand so copper doesnt get solidified as fast, and you melt the styrofoam BEFORE pouring the copper, so you can remove it fast enough to not impact the sand humidity. You can do this easily with a torch.

my thoughts were also to heat the sand in an often... Will melt the Styrofoam and raise perhaps they mould breaks apart as the moisture in the sand flashes to steam? can green sand be made with something like high temp coolant? when the water vaporized the only place to go is up the center columns...
@rasput1n6
@rasput1n6 7 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about an oven at first, but you destroy the sand's humidity also, what makes it stick together and not just fall like well.. sand. The idea of getting the sand moisture with another fluid with higher boiling point is also very interesting. I hope our favourite airliner finds a way to solve theese problems ^^

4000 comments in, I'm not sure if someone else has already mentioned this, but pure copper is notoriously difficult to cast even into simple shapes like your gear. You really ought to alloy it with about 1% silicon or 0.25% phosphorus to make it more fluid and deoxidize the melt. You can easily order various "master alloys" of copper-silicon or copper-phosphorus to make alloying simple.

I have seen brass casting done on PBS. They used wax and plaster to cast the mold. Object was fashioned from wax and suspended in plaster with an opening to the top of the mold. After plaster set up, molten brass was poured into mold and let cool down. After cooling down, plaster was smashed away and the brass object was all but done. Some trimming required. The use of wax worked as fuel to keep the metal hot while casting. Check it out sometime.

If you ever decide to cast copper again, I have a trick I was shown a few years ago... When pouring the sand into the tray, mix it with wood glue, It will help the sand stay in place... You may also think about using kinetic sand(saw a video with aluminum) however it may still come apart.

not saying you're wrong it is just a hard way to make napalm. - formula - Gasoline (Octane) (C8H18) Benzene(C6H6) Polystyrene (C8H8) ----- where acetone is (CH₃)₂CO - --- there are many ways to make it. where you want the polystyrene to be consumed not just gelled, making more imperfections in the casting, he could have made a 2 part mold with risers to allow heat to be trapped and contaminates float away

If you were to make a steel (or anything that can withstand high temperature) version of that sandbox, would you be able to heat up the sand to a point where it is still solid, but allows you to pour the molten copper in and give it a bit more time before it solidifies, due to a smaller difference in temperature?

Hey Grant. I was just wondering if you used a bigger box for the sand and the foam to form the copper gear. In your part 2 you posted today. That would probably expand the surface area of the sand which will make the sand not pop out because of the heat that is condensed in one area. Just had the thought.

I don't think so because the metal that's being cut would have less resistance than the nichrome wire, and the electricity wouldn't flow through the nichrome wire, and wouldn't heat it up... No. Unless it was already hot before. (No.)

In theory what you could do instead of the foam is make a metal based mold that can withstand the heat of the copper so you can set the copper in. No issues with sand moving or causing issues.

Use a top and pull the mold out. The sand will insulate the copper and you'll get an even cast. Use a pvc pipe in the center when packing the top, and make sure to talc the layers. Keep the mold clean.

It would cool less quickly. Nitrogen, because of the leidenfrost effect, is actually a really poor coolant of hot things -- it gassifies immediately and nitrogen gas forms a really effective insulator between the hot object and the cold nitrogen. Water or oil are really effective cooling mechanisms.

What if you bake the sand in the oven first with the styrofoam mold in it. To prevent too much loss of moisture in the sand use the wetter formula that you used before. That way as it heats up a little bit will evaporate and it still might maintain its structural integrity
