UPDATE: The urethane used to make the mold is TC 3180, not 2180 (I misspoke in the video).

Thank you so much for your videos... they are so informative, detailed, and full of tips!!! Do you have a video showing you making the mold over the original sculpt using the urethane? I have used latex, silicone, and plaster to make molds but never urethane... Thanks again!!!!

Great tutorial! Really cleared some things up for me. One question, though. You mention that the mold was made from TC 2180. When I search online for this all I find is MPP 2180 mold prep and primer. Did I miss something? Where can I find this? Thanks!

Hey, thanks! Glad it’s helpful. Oh darn, It’s actually called TC 3180, I misspoke I. The voice over 😢! I didn’t make the mold, so I didn’t source the materials. I just texted my friend who made the mold, and he said you can buy it here: Revchem.com . It should be under urethanes - personally I don’t see it. I’d give them a call and see if they carry it. If they don’t carry it, let me know, and I can ask around my network for other options. You can also make a stone mold or a BJB 1630 resin mold if you’re only casting silicone (1630 isn’t good for foam casting).

Thanks for the speedy reply! I couldn't find it on Revchem but the 1630 looks like a good choice since I'm only using silicone.

@@neanderetal118 Nice choice, that is what is mostly used in the industry for silicone - and actually the foot plate of this mold is 1630 too. The 1630 is a really nasty material. Be sure to wear a respirator and pour it in a well ventilated area or outside and let it off-gas for a day before handling. Also, I recommend using a paint shaker to shake up the contents instead of stirring it by hand. You can sometimes take it to a paint store and ask them to use their paint shakers for you. Good luck with everything!

Hey Emily This was wonderful 😀♥️. I do have two question since I never worked with silicone: Is there a difference between the silicone you used for your puppet and the silicone used in mold making? Can you use the silicone for mold making to cast the body of your puppet? When I looked up silicone on Amazon that seemed to be the top search result. I was wondering what you thought of it? Thank you so much for your videos and instruction. I do look forward to see future content in your channel 😀💕

Hi Charleen! The differences in silicone between puppets and molds *can* be very different. For puppet bodies, GI 1110 or GI 1000 is what you would want to use if you're using a TIN based silicone - and GI 1000 is used in soft molds, so there's that. There is also a platinum silicone that is called Dragon Skin, which works well for casting puppets. I've never used it before, but it is a stop motion industry standard puppet skin material. What you've found on Amazon (I'm not sure what it is? Add a link here if you want me to see and comment on it) is likely too hard and brittle for puppet skin. Mold making silicones are meant to be harder to hold their shape better and not be malleable. If you make a silicone mold with the intent of casting a silicone body into that mold, be very aware that silicone bonds to silicone. You have to use a generous amount of release to make sure there is a barrier between the two silicones. You can make a silicone mold, but I recommend making a stone mold using something like Ultracal 30 for silicone casting. Good luck with your work!!

Hello! Here in Spain I can't find the silicone that you teach, I have found several silicone hardnesses but I don't know if I should buy the softest or the medium hard one, what do you recommend? Do you think a very soft silicone would work?
@emilydmyers
@emilydmyers Жыл бұрын
Hi! I would recommend the softer silicone so the skin isn't fighting against the armature and causing bounce back while posing it for animation. Soft silicone can tear more easily than harder silicone - you might have to do a few tests and see how it goes! Maybe the place where you're sourcing your silicone will provide samples? Also, maybe reach out to the business that makes the silicone for expert advice. Good luck!

Hi! Emily, can you colour the silcone, due to skin tones and is it hard to achieve? awesome info video👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
@emilydmyers

Yes! I tinted my silicone with white Silc-Pig (google that name for the product) because my character is ghost-like. You can buy the pigment in the color of your character and mix it in before casting like you see me do in the video.

This isn't the first time I've seen someone using an expensive "triple beam" scale to weigh out the silicone. My question is, wouldn't it be simpler and more efficient to use a digital scale?
@emilydmyers
@emilydmyers 6 ай бұрын
I learned on a triple beam and am just the most comfortable using one. The industry uses both - usually a digital readout for larger batches. The triple beam is more accurate in my opinion for smaller weights.

It's called GI 1110 from Composite Casting. They're old school, and you have to call to make an order. You can google them and find their website which has their number listed. When you order, be sure to ask for Transparent Base and Activator. Then you can add the Silc Pig to tint it whatever flesh tone you're going for. Good luck, and happy casting!

If youre making mold with plaster you first make one half and then the other. How do you keep the 2 parts of the mold from drying up together when u make the second half. Im new to this so i dont know much about it but i love your content
@emilydmyers

You would want to use a generous amount of a release agent on the first side, before pouring the other half. Good question!

7:30 why did you do 3% pigment after writing that you are supposed to do 2%? did you not realize you messed up the math?
@emilydmyers
@emilydmyers Жыл бұрын
Whoops, I guess I made a mistake. Good catch! %2 is the highest suggested amount of pigment to use to keep the integrity of the silicone intact...my puppet's been just fine with the higher amount though.
