Casting another fire ant colony with molten aluminum. This is a fairly small fire ant colony. The aluminum pouring got a little sloppy on this cast and the grass caught on fire, but the cast turned out amazing. Be sure to check out my other videos to see the casting of larger fire ant colonies as well as the casting of a few other types of ant colonies.
This is a medium sized cast compared to the other fire ant colonies that I have done. The final cast is 14.8 lbs., 13" at its widest, and 12.5" deep.
See more detailed pictures of the resulting display at www.anthillart.com/castings/061/

Its so cool how the aluminum doesn't even look as if it were pouring. I couldn't even tell aluminum was going in until he spilled it xD
@AnthillArt
@AnthillArt 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is weird! It may be obvious but the reason is that the outer layer of aluminum hardens a little bit from the cool air and the molten aluminum continues to pour behind it.

To all the people saying: just imagine if they'd do that to humans. Here's some reasons why you're wrong. 1. Allmost everyone eats meat. How is that any different from killing ants. If you eat meat and think this experiment was wrong you're a hypocrit. 2. This one was abandoned by the looks of it. 3. Ant's are not intelligent. They have an instinct and don't have a Cerebral cortex. Only higher animals have those. That means they don't have memory's. They don't have pain receptors and they have no purpose other then to survive. 4. Acts that may be seen as group work are the product of different hormones with different meanings released in certain situations. 5. For the alien experiments fans. You can ask humans how they make their buildings or subway stations. You can't ask ants how they build their homes. If we don't do this kind of things we will never learn more about them.

Kittycat96622 AJ loves Rainbowdash 1.Then you are an exception, but for the billions of meat eaters on this planet my argument is valid (p.s. Not even fish?) 3. They could have stung me if they were red ants. But as mentioned, this one was empty. And this argument also still applies to the billions of meat eaters in this world

I love these videos, finally fire ants get what they deserve; and to all the ant defenders out there you need to think about what the fire ants are doing. They kill native species and higher animals starve because of it. Fire ants are one of the key causes for the horned lizard's endangerment. Instead of having animals around that actually serve a purpose and help the environment, it seems some people want creatures around that harm it.

I'm amazed at how readily the aluminum flows to all the nooks and crannies of the colony. How do you figure when a good stopping point is? Do you melt down cans for your aluminum?
@AnthillArt
@AnthillArt 10 жыл бұрын
No cans, I just get pure aluminum ingots. When to stop pouring is something I have just gotten a feel for over time. I can see the aluminum when it starts backing up in the pour hole. If I pour too much longer after that, sometimes the hill breaks open and messes up the cast.

I put sand around it to keep it stable and to keep any aluminum from flowing out of it

I know aluminium is easier with its lower melting point and price, but have you ever considered using a different material like copper or brass(I know they're like 3 times more expensive)? I think it would look very nice with the copper and brass colours.

They did a cast with zinc before.

I saw that but zinc and aluminium look very similar.

I'm thinking about trying copper or an alloy of copper at some point with smaller casts. The main problem is that it's several times heavier than aluminum. This cast would weigh around 50 lbs. using copper. That would be tough to handle during the pouring process.

AnthillArt I don't think you want to use zinc or copper... they will pollute the ground badly. I would stick to aluminum, it's harmless.

you should plant a tree or something in the holes left from digging them up.

This should be one way of starting a forest fire in Colorado. Pouring molten metal down an anthill then spilling it in wrong location
