Tania León’s Á Tres Voces was written for famed violinist Sanford Allen who, in 1962, broke a 120-year-old history by becoming the first full-time African American violinist of the New York Philharmonic. Allen served as music director of New York’s Leaf Pepper Concert Series 1996-2014; through this series, Á Tres Voces was commissioned and received its world premiere. Fellow performers on that October 30, 2010, concert included Astrid Schween, former cellist with the Lark String Quartet and Boston Trio and current member of the Juilliard Quartet; and Nokut-hula Ngwenyama, international Japanese-Zimbabwean viola soloist, educator, composer and former president of the American Viola Society. ~Ashleigh Gordon
