Castlevania NES Secrets and History | Generation Gap Gaming - The original Castlevania. One of the most iconic titles from the NES era that resonates deeply with nearly any retro gamer you meet and it’s easy to see why. The incredible box art, a cinematic movie reel title screen and an opening sequence with our hero Simon Belmont standing firmly at the gate of the castle with its towers and the moon looming in the background. Then you hear the timeless opening track Vampire Killer as you advance through the courtyard and you are hooked. You can hear the music in your head right now can’t you. #Castlevania #NES #GenerationGapGaming

GenerationGapGaming the NES doesn’t have a save feature? That doesn’t make sense. The game opted for no password. Probably due to the fact that the famicom version allowed game saves. So it’s easier to strip a function out then to add a function in. There are many games that have save features and passwords on the NES.

The original Castlevania was my absolute favorite arcade game. I spent so many quarters on the arcade version I just had to have it in the nes. vs. Castlevania but Player's Choice 10 Castlevania would be my all time most memorable.

I think the biggest issue with Simon's Quest was the bad translation. For the type of game it was, being able to read the correct dialog was pretty much essential. And they sorta borked it. That's why the only way people in the west ever finished that game was via a guide or a buddy telling them what to do. (like kneel for 5 seconds to summon the tornado) But it's a classic imo Also, Bloody Tears = best Castlevania song ever!

I know people hate on it, but Simon’s Quest is my favorite Castlevania. A few years back I played Castlevania 2; Redacted, that replaced of of the unhelpful clues with real ones, and fixed some of the other problems, and it was awesome. Highly recommend checking it out.

Simon's Quest was the first one I ever played. I played this one in the 90s and was a natural making it to Frankenstein's Creature and Igor with no effort. It took some work but over the years I beat the Creature, Death and finally Dracula. This is a fun one for me to go back and buzz through from time to time. I need to upload some video footage again. I'm really good at this game. I've beaten death with just the whip without getting hit by his pscythes.

I have 2 copies. An early version that has a manufacturing defect that makes Simon walk in the air across screen and a later version that fixed it. Looks like the capacitors were too close to the chips and then they fixed it with later sold copies. I never saw a recall. Noticed this on a few of the first versions of other games where the capacitors were too close to the chips and caused overheating.

Great game, good video, but there's always more. On stage 4, you can avoid the first skele-dragon by just walking straight under it, and you'll reach the door before it can hit you. Similarly, on stage 3 I find it easier to walk forward towards the platforms with the hunchbacks on, and turn back when they jump down. They will always do the jump with the bigger and slower arc, making it easier to hit them. And on stage 6, if you don't have the stopwatch and are overwhelmed, it's better to stand on the stairs to take a hit, because you don't get knocked down if you are on the stairs. This strategy becomes incredibly valuable in Castlevania 3, of course. Hilariously, despite having beaten this game dozens of time, I never knew there was a 1-up in the game. It's insane that there's only a single one, and it's so cryptic to get. Makes you wonder what is even the point.

When I was in Jr. High, me and my friends were at the height of our passion for NES. We all had our favorite games, but the one series we were all nuts about was Castlevania. In a discussion on how far we made it in this game I made the mistake of calling Stage 13 The Courtyard, to much ridicule. I didn’t have this game, so I only got to play it when I found it to rent at the video store.

Hunter P Brown did you know? After stage 99 the game stops counting the stages and it continues over and over. And there is a maximum of guys you can get by points. I believe it’s 32 guys. Maybe 36. Somewhere around there. So if you try to get more after that score is reached, you can’t get anymore guys even if you got 50,000.

Hunter P Brown go fire bomb when you can. After castle six, the game straight up starts cheating with the grim reaper. It’s seems that boss is the only one that changes the AI as the castles go by. Have fun with it. I might do it again to to see how many castles I can clear in one continue, maxing our extra guys allowed of course.

A few things missed. Just before you encounter the first raven in the third level, after you’ve climbed out of the first screen, if you jump off that platform instead of dropping, a ghost will attack you. In the final level, when you finally get to the point of being attacked by the eagles and the hunchbacks, when climb down into the second screen just before you climb up and get ready to exit that area to the stairs that lead to Dracula’s chambers, if you go left and stand on a gear for a short period of time, while being attacked by eagles and hunchbacks, you’ll get a money bag that will appear on the landing you where on when you entered the screen.

I only have castlevania 3 on hard copy but this got me to begin playing through the game on the nes classic. I feel like I’ve missed so many years of great games by ignoring this series. Great video!

Fun facts, you can skip the underground section of stage 1 by damage boosting off the bat. You can also one shot the big bat, medusa(holy water), and the mummies (boomerang.) Bonus!! There IS IN FACT a hidden 1up in this game. As far as anyone knows, it's the only one.

Although I've been playing this game for nearly 30 years now I was shocked at how many other hidden treasures there are in the game that I didn't know about. Intuitively I know to test my whip out on blocks to discover the pork chops but the ones where you stand for a moment, or kneel for a moment, or walk against a wall for a moment is why I never found those. The only time I kneel is during combat and with the timer combined with the difficulty I rarely stand still anywhere for too long. Thanks for this wonderful and comprehensive video! :D

This is one of the BEST video game videos I've ever seen! It's kinda funny to hear a Southern drawl explaining Castlevania, but it reminds me of my own childhood playing it when it was a new game!!! One of my best memories was spending a weekend completing it with my best friend.

I think what helps your videos a lot is that you cover the games pretty extensively, history, manuals, and then your own knowledge on how to handle it. Can make some veterans learn something new be it history or exploits and it makes it so much easier for someone new to get a refresher and then try to follow the guide and learn from there when they start playing. I would have loved this channel growing up haha, I hope this manages to get some younger fellas to try the games you cover.

Great video! I've been playing this game since it first came out and I've beaten it countless times. I never knew about that one up or several of the secret triggered treasures! I didn't know about defeating the Mummy Men or the Grim Reaper with the holy water. I'll definitely want to make note of these things for future playthroughs!

I remember playing castlevania for the first time way back in 1987. Before that, I was heavily in to Super Mario Bros and other fun colorful games. It was definitely darker and spooky. And VERY DIFFICULT. But definitely worth my time

I adored this game as a kid. Played the mess outta it, very frustrating at first, but once you play it a couple hundred times it gets a little less frustrating! I remember beating it the first time... glorious day! We had a rotation of games, and were very blessed to have what we had growing up. Cherished memories.
