Holy shit dude. These speedruns are something else, I tell ya. There just isn't that twitch reflex anymore. Just pure control over something as seemingly cumbersome as Castlevania 1. I knew of a few of these tricks like using knockback to phase through higher platforms to get to them quicker and that little trick to pass the under-passage in stage 1... but what the hell are you doing to those bosses!? You killed the Bat in like 1 god damn hit!! How does that trick work? I also admire how you've mastered the timing on that whip. Even in the bleakest of moments, you're able to keep it together and coordinate your presses precisely on-time to crack that whip as fast as it can be. Simply incredible.

Lol twitch reflexes is the last way i would describe the clunky ass controls of this game, so idk what you mean by that exactly. Games nowadays require much more quick reflexes. But i too would like to know what the hell hes doing to drop those bosses. I hate that theres some glitch like that lol. Wanted to see him beat them legit, but whatever, it probably wouldnt look like anything special anyway.

Nice one. I can BEAT Frankenstein WITHOUT A Sub Weapon. Went through the game 4 TIMES!, couldn't beat Dracula on The 4TH Time. STAGE 74!!!! I love this game...I LOVE this game so much. Started playing it in 1988(I was 13). Want to get The Box Art as a Tattoo. Like James(The Angry Nintendo Nerd) says..."Castlevania..it Never stops..I talk about it all The Fucking Time...!!" This game brings SO MUCH joy to my life. Thanks for listening folks....

i beat frankenstein without subweapons as well :P i was playing it online so it ran quite slow though. accidentally jumped on frankenstein (and then accidentally jumped on igor later on) but still got him :) also beat the pair of mummies the "hard way": hit the lowest block to get the pot roast and no safety block afterward. with no sub-weapons

Such an iconic speedrun. Despite being almost 8 years old, the strategies for the level 1 bat kill, cave skip, and Dracula fight are actually a tad harder than today's strategies (which are already mildly hard to learn/do consistently). Really shows kmac's skill level in this game.

the block at the bottom(which has a pot roast) should not be taken unless you really really REALLY need it. otherwise you can't get back out (i reached this boss and got the roast right away and had no subweapons and still beat them) they are very easy

and by the way the way they were killed so fast is because of a glitch that cause damage to be dealt to enemies every frame when they overlap

Wow 8:11, literally an inch away from this great run being completely spoiled. The surprise, random secondary weapon drops in this game are one of the biggest threats when it comes to speed running the original Castlevania.

It astounds me how you just breezed through the game like this. Playing honestly, I can't get past Frankenstein's monster. How did you do Dracula? It's like if you allow yourself to get hit at the right time, you do triple damage or something?

if you and a boss take damage at the same time,the boss will take a huge amount of damage. simon's health will go down normally.

why isn't this on the website........on the SDA site its 12:06 by Fuckdoc. Plus that first boss, you can do that if you have two enemies on the screen like with the mummies on level 3 with the boomerang. With just the whip though how is that possible. Please explain.

It will be on the SDA site soon. It is still going through the process of being published. Also, to answer the question about the critical hit on the bat. If you deal damage to an enemy in the same frame as Simon takes damage, it does a large amount of damage to the enemy. As seen in the Dracula fight as well.

kmafrocard yes I am familiar with the critical hit, its a frame perfect hit. Im not trying to debunk this, but its been debated that its a TAS only trick for the bat. Dracula can be done fairly easily. Just never seen a non TAS of it on the bat.

Harold Rhea It's 1st try success rate is extremely low. When I was doing attempts, I would get it maybe 1/10. During practice for the trick, I would be able to get it 1/2 the time before I ran out of health. It is very difficult to pull off, but not impossible. The hardest part of being able to do it somewhat consistently was the setup in getting the bat to swoop down towards Simon. I was able to the bat to swoop down towards Simon every time at the beginning of the fight (albeit the delay whether it be immediate, 1 seconds, 2 seconds, etc is Random.) If not setup properly, the bat at times will fly to the left side of the screen. I use a visual cue as to where the bat's head is over the pillar in the background to press B

kmafrocard I just tried this for about an hour, I don't know if I am pressing way to soon or early. For practice im using my wiiU for save state before the bat. (better than doing the level over 897398457 before I fail.) I'd be happy with a 10% ratio, but I can't even get one. I might post a video response to this and maybe you can point out what im doing wrong lol. I just started running this game seriously. I posted a 14:39 on my channel first attempt. (lots of room to improve, and not be anti passive on Dracula) The set up for the bat is awesome, works everytime to get him there, just can't hit it at the right moment.

MrTonyhawk44 it's a glitch that is based on you hitting the enemy at the same time you are getting hit by the enemy. You do 16 damage instead of 1. And enemies, well boss enemies, have 15 health, ergo, 1 hit kill. That's why the bat boss gets killed in one hit.

First live is a bug that takes 6 hit damages. Trick is you have to hit him the moment when you get hit. Very hard to do the timing. Same for the first boss. It takes 6 hits to die, so it dies one shot. Second live is not really hard. And he kills it.

It's a bug that takes 6 hit damages from the last boss and kills the other characters one shot. Trick is you have to hit him the moment when you get hit. Very hard to do the timing.

the same as the bat trick, critical hit, if you hit an enemy and you get hit at same time (same frame) the enemy takes alot more damage, the reason why the bat boss died with 1 critical and dracula need 2 crits and some more hits is because dracula has much more hp than the bat boss. i should tell you tho, crits are really hard (almost impossible) to perform, ive been playing castlevania for alot time and honestly my time in the other 5 levels is pretty close to his but in the last level i always fuck up because i take much more time in dracula then him. thats why he gets 11.48 and i get like 12.48 :/

this run kinda upsets me because it shows that, with all of these items you could use in the game, very few of them were actually useful at all. my favorite items were the Throwing Axe and the Holy Water, just because they were able to kill bosses so quickly. i wish the other items in the game saw more use, but with the way simon is controlled, and the nature of how enemies operate in the game, it just feels so mediocre. of all the items that are by far THE most useless, it's definitely the dagger, followed by the stopwatch, although even that's more useful than the dagger ever will be! i was surprised to see you beat the mummies so quickly though. i think i used holy water to beat them? or actually, this was the only time where the daggers were useful at all. i used holy water on that frankenstein guy.

I think there is a weird damage glitch when fighting bosses. I found this out when fighting Dracula recently. If you take damage at the exact time you hit the boss it does some crazy massive damage to the boss. It looked like he took the hit and hit the bat at the same time. The bat is pretty weak to begin with so the damage boost KO'd the fool. When you do it with Dracula it takes off closer to 4 damage.

+XenoMorphic It's a glitch where the game knows you got hit, but it knows the boss got hit at the same time, the nes can't process this so it kills the boss to reduce lag. This works on this boss only because the game doesn't need to process much during the fight, where as the other bosses take a lot more processing power. So the nes thinks that it's processing more than it needs to. So like I said to reduce lag it kills the boss.

Yeah, some of the stuff, the getting hurt to get to different places stuff, that's legit, but some of the "beating bosses in one hit" stuff seems pretty sketchy.

Black Desert Special button som controllers have. Holding down a Turbo butten simulates extremely fast button mashing.

turbo does not help in castlevania.

reefchiefer not with the whip, but if you stand really close to a foe and use a power like throwin dagger then it will turbo. There can only be one dagger on the screen at once but when u r close to your target it will only apear briefly mayby not at all and then the turbo can work.

That's called a critical strike. You must deal damage to the bat at the same frame as he does damage to you dealing one shot damage on him.

He started timing it from when he was able to move (almost ten seconds in). I think the timing should begin upon pressing start.
