@@Fechtenundich That's a dumb take. First of all, they put a lot of effort and money into philanthropy to fight global issues... more than enough to make up for their lifestyles, which aren't that extravagant to begin with compared to other rich celebrities. Second of all, the whole message of the letter & this video seems to be emphasizing the need for systemic change (e.g. renewable energies cutting the carbon emissions of all your electronics down to near-zero) rather than individual choices (plastic straws).

One of the weirdest and biggest reasons people and companies are not moving to renewable energy in America is the local and state tax rules. Reverse carbon tax is very common down south with New Mexico and Texas having the highest. In Pennsylvania a new Tesla has no sales tax but in Texas it has 3 different taxes including sale taxes. If you have enough solar panels to power your entire home and give back to the Community, you will be charged in Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, and New Mexico instead of getting paid by the energy company. Most of these laws started in 2012 but were not enforced until 2017. In Every state where cannabis is legal for recreation, your tax breaks for renewable power/ technology is 3 to 10 times higher than regular states without the reverse carbon states.

@@SweBeach2023 That literally directly contradicts the point he made in the video that for the most part a person living in the "first world" can't drop their energy consumption below half of the average.
@magma2680
@magma2680 3 жыл бұрын
@@SweBeach2023 it's quite cool and all but it would affect everyones lifestyle, not neccesarily positively either. It shaves just 25% off of the co2 emission of individuals which is itself at most just 20% of the total emission. The total change would then be at the very highest a 5% and at the lowest, just less than 1% decrease in global co2 emission for a radical change in lifestyle which itself may come with its own host of unique problems. Even in a more realistic scenario where this decrease in co2 is coupled with others such as energy generation and transportation, the "individuals" part of the pie chart can only truly be used to put a cherry on the cake or to finish the final step before the finish line.

@@benf8487 I don't know if you replied to the right comment chain but let me just rebut this statement here; Per capita is the only meaningful measurement to refer to in the context of this video since it's talking about the footprint of a person. On larger scale too per capita is far from misleading since it shows where the concentration of emissions is. The global emissions are multiple orders of magnitude more concentrated in USA rather than China for example. And that is absolutely a point we have to consider. The amount of people in a country should provide the baseline for the allowed CO2 emissions and right now the USA is a far bigger offender than China taken that absolute truth into consideration.

I'm just an annoying comment reminding you that this is *only* about CO2 (good video and research still!). For example, the reason they switch to paper straws is also that it's a renewable material and doesn't use oil which is a fossil fuel that is limited, while paper (trees) are renewable. Same with cotton. So don't feel bad about using your textile bag, it is not all about CO2!

I'm glad you pointed out that stuff can be manufactured using renewable energy too. Hate when people smugly say 'Well your electric car cost blah blah tons of CO2 to make!' As if they care about pollution when they're against electric cars for some reason.
@epiphany271
@epiphany271 3 жыл бұрын
I love electric cars, have one right now, but we can't disregard how much carbon goes into making them. I've not heard a single good source claim that they take the same amount of co2 as an ICE vehicle, like the video seems to state. EVs take much more carbon to produce. They only become a net positive if they are driven for a a good amount of years, depending on what generates your electricity. For ex: states in the US that burn mostly coal, it is actually worse to have an EV than an ICE car. My biggest problem is people buying new EVs every few years which is NOT good for the environment. You have to keep driving for usually at least 5-7 years of 0 emissions or else you're no better than a pickup truck driver.

@@epiphany271 "For example, states in the U.S that burn mostly coal is actually worse to have an EV than an ICE car." Can you explain why exactly? I don't know much about the CO2 emissions, and want to know why it matters what other people are doing, and how it affects your own emissions.
@Alex-0597
@Alex-0597 3 жыл бұрын
@@phabiorules Basically, manufacturing a traditional gas-powered car requires less energy (less work needs to be done) and less costly materials (electric motors and high-capacity batteries require materials that are really bad for the environment to mine) than an electric car. The upside is that electric vehicles don't directly release pollution into the atmosphere because they run on electricity, unlike the exhaust of a combustion engine. However, that electricity has to be produced by local power plants. In areas that use a lot of nonrenewable energy, that means that the amount of pollution produced by the power plant to recharge your electric car can be greater than the pollution created by a traditional car burning gas.

Not really, the Vlogbrothers have been working with the Gates for a while, I bet others have too, it's probable good marketing for them to sponsor a few KZfaqrs. Gotta hold up that good reputation so no one notices that Microsoft made its money exploiting child labor in third world countries, partnering with oil companies and doing everything to evade taxes. If the Gates really want do help, they could, they have literally enough money to swing elections and end homelessness, instead they put a fraction of that stolen wealth into charity and vanity projects. Gotta still have enough left to take a vacation on a superyacht while there are children literally dying because of your company's actions. But hey, at least it helps them sleep at night I guess.

@Average Joesson Just in the west. Most of that is due to policies enacted by leftists to discourage their native population from starting families so they can import cheap, third-world laborers who will vote exclusively for them, as they are the party that wants to give them free housing, healthcare, schooling, and food. It's despicable.

@@combativeThinker you mean like abortion and divorce? Because as far as I know there isn't much they have done to cut population growth. Also the left encourages women to be more sexually liberated. And that actually dramatically increases the chance of pregnancy. Besides, there are too damn many people in the world as it is. Have you ever been to Atlanta during rush hour? And immigrants don't get special treatment from the government. In fact, they get considerably less than the average American. All that stuff about free healthcare, driver's license and a business is misleading bullshit that is about as trust worthy as anything coming out of a Communist's mouth.

@@roberteischen4170 You simply sound low IQ, you haven't thought this through to its final conclusion. If you don't trust communists then great, but you must recognize that this Marxist threat does not end there. They want no more white people, no free thinkers, no more families - feminism was a targeted attack at the white family - you say "liberated" women are more likely to have children, maybe - but they are less likely to be asked to become wives. Young men are not interested in marrying used goods, and so we enter the realm of fatherless households, divorce being normalized etc We are witnessing the decline, strong empires do not glorify the murder of the unborn or the whoredom of their women - they certainly do not allow men in little hats to cease the reigns of power and ethnically replace them. The west is doomed at this point and a massive war is a certainty.

Honestly, using a reusable bag 150x isn't that hard. Even if you only use it once a week on your trip to the grocery store, you only need to use it for about 3 years before it's more carbon-efficient than plastic. The issue with this for me is that I always forget my reusable bags, and now I have a giant ball of them in my closet that I don't know what to do with.

Why are we talking about carbon efficiency of making bags? It’s practically negligible. The sole reason not to use plastic bags is to reduce plastic waste
