And at one point the team was just Cap, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. 3 previous criminals, who only recently turned good. Or just said "we're good guys now". I mean Wanda and Pietro though now established heroes had much longer at the time been members of the Brotherhood of EVIL mutants under Magneto trying to rule or destroy the world. Basically major terrorists.

I think in the Exiles comic they stated that Stark was usually a bad guy in the alternate universes. So, Stark as a good guy is a RARE thing.

Stan was a kid when hired. Editors were a dime a dozen. We usually celebrate the guys that last longer a run or two. Stan made being an editor appreciable, confirming he oversaw most issues during his tenure.

Maybe he was...but he was still a bona fide good writer as well. This was the guy who invented 'great power=great responsibility' all of spiderman quips and had a nuanced albeit short convo between 2 black characters in the 60s on the subject of civil rights

Compared to what was the norm for comics of the time this is actually decent. Thor's dialect alone is rather impressive in a way. Who else was using the word neophyte in books of the time? You got to also consider how many books he was likely working on at the time.

@@davejohn3600 this isn't stand best work but yeah it is ok. We need to remember annuals were a lot of extra work esp if you were also the regular writer. The stories were inevitably a little bit more off the rails than the monthlies

Wasp was also at peak craziness here with her "wasps and spiders are natural enemies so I don't like Spider-Man." For some reason she thought she was an actual wasp so she had to act like one.

@@jhornacek Actually, and this was established way back in "Tales to Astonish" No. 58, both Spider-Man and The Wasp had enough of their eponymous critters in them that, yes, they instinctually disliked each other. That's something that has been forgotten over the decades.

@@kimmetzger6630 I've never read that issue but I just read the summary on the Marvel wiki and there's nothing there about Spider-Man or the Wasp being part insect/arachnid. The Wasp in the 1960s did not have powers from a Wasp. Her shrinking powers were the same as Hank's growing/shrinking powers. Her wings and wasp-sting were synthetic. She wasn't bitten by a radioactive wasp, or merged with wasp DNA, or anything like that. It was Pym particles and tech. There is nothing in the Lee/Ditko/Romita era about Spider-Man being affected by his spider-DNA that caused him to act differently around anyone a spider would consider an enemy (like a wasp). When the Wasp meets Spider-Man during the 1960s (or just talks about him) she says "spiders and wasps are natural enemies so I don't like him". This has nothing to do with her powers or any Wasp-DNA (which she doesn't have), it's just Stan writing a woman in the 1960s and deciding that Janet has 2 reactions to a man - she thinks he's attractive and wants to date him, or she hates him. For Spider-Man, he has no opinion of the Wasp the times he meets her in the 1960s. There's no indication that his spider-powers causes him to instantly dislike her. The times he does meet her and dislikes her, it's because or what she says to him (i.e. "I'm a wasp so therefore I don't like you") or she just attacks him.

Also, the idea of a hero club, established by the Avengers, should have been a thing a long time ago. Just, located on a barge out in the bay. (There's a bay near New York, right?) Automatic target for all the bad guys.

1960s Spidey/Wasp appearances are full of the Wasp saying "I hate spiders. Spiders are natural enemies of wasps." Her hatred of Spidey has nothing to do with him as a person/hero. She literally only hates him because she's called "The Wasp" and in nature spiders and wasps are enemies.
