You don’t fool me Russel T Davies- this was one episode disguised as two and it was FANTASTIC. such a clever way to incorporate such a human story with a strong sci-fi twist in a historic WWII backdrop. It’s that unique combination that makes this show so special.

It hits a bit harder if you consider that he's still rather fresh off the back of the Time War, a conflict in which he wasn't able to save anyone, in which he lost his whole species and home planet. His ecstasy in this moment is a win he's been waiting for for a good while

@@CasualNerdReactions Just to try to help you out a bit in planning without spoiling anything: In series 2, there are 3 two-part stories: episodes 5 and 6, episodes 8 and 9, and episodes 12 and 13. In series 3, 4 and 5 are a two-parter, as are 8 and 9, and episodes 11, 12 and 13 are a three-part story.

One way you can tell a Whovian from a non Whovian. If you say Captain Jack to a non Whovian, they automatically think of Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. If you say it to a Whovian, they automatically think of John Barrymore as Captain Jack Harkness. By far, one of my favorite characters in the entire Whoniverse. It is impossible not to adore him.

John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness, went to my hometown’s public high school Joliet West. I was at the Catholic school in town a year ahead of him, so I didn’t get to know him, sad to say. But, I did know one of his best friends in school, Andy Dick, who went on to act in tv shows like Newsradio before descending in into substance abuse where he remains to this day, tragically. John’s family still lives in a nearby suburb.

I like this story for also showing the way different times reflect different attitudes toward sexuality. Jack's promiscuity and sexual flexibility, compare to the story not just of Nancy, but also the way she can blackmail someone by knowing of their bi-sexuality. That and the steps toward healing the Doctor's PSTD are excellent elements.

A stone-cold classic of a story. 😀 Remember how in the first episode Clive tells Rose that death is the Doctor's constant companion? This two-parter had fans at the time trying to work out how many stories in the "classic" (1963-1989) run didn't have any people dead at the end of the story. I can't remember the exact number (maybe four?), but "very few" definitely summed it up. And those stories took place before the Time War that you've already seen has had a huge impact on the Doctor personally. That "everybody lives" moment really is well earned for him!

The Doctor’s jubilation over everyone living is even more significant for us long-time DW fans. One of my most bittersweet memories of Classic Who is the final episode for one of the Fifth Doctor’s companions who ends up leaving because of all of the death and destruction around him. She can’t take it anymore and ready tells him off for it, putting the blame squarely on him. Seeing Eleven’s joy is just terrific.

One of my favourite things about series 1 is the way its trajectory in terms of storytelling just rockets from Dalek onwards. Before that it's good, but it suddenly goes for broke about the midway point as they hit the accelerator hard. The writer is one of my favourite TV writers full stop, but he's an old-Who fan, massive classic series fanboy. It kind of hampered him in writing this apparently because he was writing it low budget, and instead all his notes apparently were just "no! Spend our money!" Can't wait for your next few reactions.

So enjoying your reactions. I've been watching this show since 1973 so there's lots more to see. It's got story arcs (maybe even some of the first programmes to have them) that have lasted 30+ years, and it's still a show you can just dip into. It packs so much story and world building into single episodes and on a BBC Budget. To give you some perspective this used to be around £750000 - £800000 ($970000) per episode in 2005. In 1987 Star Trek TNG was spending $1300000 per episode. And it got to reuse a lot of it's sets again and again. Doctor Who went from Platform 1 to Victorian Cardiff to 10 Downing Street. In three episodes.with very limited time in the TARDIS. This show is silly, funny, clever, empathetic, progressive and everything else in between. It has times when it's good and times when it's less so. The one thing you can rely on is, if you don't like this bit much, it'll change soon enough. 😁

@@CasualNerdReactions this is a series that's going to surprise you. If you see the old stuff that will too. Characters you love are going to die. Don't think that anyone is safe. There will be sudden left turns. If I can offer any real advice watching it all for the first time, don't look at the DVD covers. Don't look at the episode titles until they're on screen. Ideally don't look at the episode thumbnails as there are spoilers in them (it's frustrating when watching). Good luck!

This is one of my favorite narrative devices in all of fiction, when the creators go - what if we take a metaphorical, abstract theme/trope, like "power of mother's love defeats evil", and make it *literal*? It's such a fun cocept that it rarely ever fails to result in something good, and these episodes are great example of that.

You remember WW2? My absolute favourite 2-parter. This is how you write a story. It feels like they wrote the story down to it's most basic then built the world around it. Fleshing it out with a convincing B-story with Nancy and Jamie that turns out to be the key to resolving the problem Captain Jack inadvertently created. Although, when the Doctor said "just this once, everybody lives" is a bit confusing because it's set in the blitz (I think it was probably part of the script for a while and the producers forgot they set the episode in a war torn Britain).

So that one line, "Before this war began, I was a father and a grandfather. Now I am neither. But I'm still a doctor." when The Doctor says he 'knows the feeling' he's not just talking about being a doctor. His FIRST companion back in the Classic era Who, in the very first season, was his granddaughter. Which also means he had a son or daughter (I'm not sure it's ever been stated which one he had?). So he was a father and a grandfather.

So you've got a taste of the writing of Steven Moffat, future* showrunner of Doctor Who (*for you that is). You'll get one story par season from him and it's always a treat. Russel T. Davies always said Moffat's script came in perfectly, never needed to adjust anything. To give you an idea, if you are familiar with the show 'Sherlock' with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, he was the showrunner for that too. But my heart holds fond memories for his very first show 'Press Gang' on kids tv, about the life of teenagers working for the 'Junior Gazette' and critics complained such good writing was wasted on the kids, but honestly, this was the reason why this show was so popular watched by kids, teenagers and adults. And I watched it recently and it's still better then most average shows hence why it still got high ratings on IMDB and Steven did win a BAFTA award with it for his writing, when he was only 29 years old. And boy does he have won awards ever since.... Sorry, rambling a bit, but now you know you can have legitime expectations.

I have an answer to your question regarding the 2-part nature of some of these stories. The format of these stories varies depending on the writer. Some stories are written for specific episode counts in mind, and the cliffhangers are placed in by the original writer. Other stories were written as a single episode and cliffhangers have to be added in during adaptation. This is how the novel Human Nature by Paul Cornell became the 2 parter Human Nature/The Family of Blood in season 3 of the show.

This episode features the 1st occurrence in the new era of someone stepping into the TARDIS and saying those famous lines - "It's bigger on the inside" - after Rose said a different variation back in the first episode. Not every person has reacted that way throughout the show's history... but many have. I made a video capturing a lot of those reactions years ago - one of my faves. Recently re-uploaded. - - Oh! Sorry Chris - spoilers, probably better not to be tempted... As for the cliffhanger ending... That was a MASSIVE part of Classic Who; Most episodes went for 25 mins, and there would be on average 4 episodes for each storyline. So you'd have about 3 cliffhanger endings per story. I was very pleased to see that whilst "most" episodes of this revival were only single-part stories, there were still some chances for cliffhangers.

If there is one thing you can always take away from a Dr. Who episode it's "Where there is a will, there is always a way" sometimes you just have to think outside the box to figure it out. 🙂

When these episodes aired there were actual censorship warnings in the UK and questions about whether they should’ve been aired before the UK Watershed (9pm limit). I can safely say that as a 9 year old when this aired, it HORRIFIED me

was great to see such a natural reaction to this 2-part Who story - it's one of the best and great to rewatch - but there's much more to come... Enjoy!

Imagine being a kid and watching this before bed 😮 (I wasn't scared though but for some it scared the pants off them) also Jack is the first canonically queer character him being omni sexual

Part of my struggle as a reactor is I’ve seen more 25 of those suggestions 😅 several of them I wish I could react to! One day I hope to find someone who hasn’t seen many films and shows and invite them to join me. Ok, mostly because I just wanna watch firefly again.
