Greetings from Lithuania! We use theese engines in our locomotives. Really good engines. Main dissadvantage is oil tubing next to turbos. Sometimes they don't stand pressure and vibrations and starts pouring hot oil on engine exaust collector... Thats how i got fire on engine section couple days ago. Im not the first one tho. Also metal quality is funny too. We had about 5 or 7 accidents when piston brakes thru the block litterally goes outside the engine... I remenber climbing a steep hill with heavy freight train (back when i was helper) and then onboard computer showed message about hot exaust gas temperature. So i went to engine room to check it and i saw alot of smoke ans piston laying on the floor next to a block with huge hole in it. That was very surprising to say at least. But overall engine is good. :)

That is a 3516 4EK EIS model. I have one of them and 7 older 3RC mag engines mine have over 225,000 hours (installed in late 80s, run ever since) and have never required going to a machine shop, we rebuild them in place. heads every 2 years, cylinders and pistons every 8 years, bearings halfway thru the pistons life. Actually swapping them out is a waste of time, if properly maintained they will literally go forever, even on sour gas.

We had several 3500 series on gen sets. Mainly 8's and 16's. We would do a top end between 8 and 10,000 hours. Would favor the 8 if possible. These were all 1800 RPM.Of course in changing out the heads we would look for any problems in the cylinders.We had continual problems with the rear support bearing on the 3516 gen going south.This would happen under 1000 hours. This was a roller bearing that simply would not take the heat.We also installed the first 3616 in a ship as main propulsion. This was about 1990.We pulled out a 3612 that would eat itself every couple of hundred hours. Mainly piston seizing. The 3600 series was an 11 plus inch bore engine max RPM was as remember 1200. I might be wrong on that RPM, it may be lower.

A special member is also available in Marine application only 3618 V18 engine. All engines is designed on 11 inch cylinder bore. Caterpillar 3500 series 6.7 inch bore Caterpillar 3400 series 5.4 inch bore. C15 has same bore even same cylinder liners. C16 has 140 mm bore and C18 has 145 mm. Caterpillar 3300 series has 4.75 inch cylinder bore Caterpillar 3200 series has 4.5 inch cylinder bore Caterpillar old is gold D346, D348, D349 diesel engines has also 5.4 inch / 137 mm cylinder bore

Be nice if someone would make a comprehensive video series on these 35 series engine overhauls with a good combination of narration and actual footage of work being done,along with footage of first start/running and dyno test and numbers. It would also be great for your business as well to show the care taken to bring these giants back to life. Might be worth having a videographer/editor on staff for this. Just my .02

Dear CAT 3516 V16 diesel engine is member of 3500 superceded series which is bigger, most reliable and powerful engine as compared to predecessor CAT D399 V16 engine. CAT 3512 diesel V12 engine is also superceded of D398 V12 engine. Cat 3500 series is designed on 170 mm cylinder bore & 190 mm Stroke as compared to 160 mm cylinder bore in D379 V8, D398 V12 and D399 V16 engine respectively. Also I believe D300 diesel and natural gas engines are designed on 1000 RPM as compared to CAT 3500 series are 1200 rpm in petroleum field and 1500 - 1800 rpm in industrial engines / power generation.

How can you run a diesel engine on natural gas?
@marcredwine87355 жыл бұрын
Easily... matter of fact they like NG and digester methane better than diesel. Run longer, not as many issues. Have rebuilt a many 3512 and 3516 that fan on alternate fuels.
@Drottninggatan20175 жыл бұрын
@@marcredwine8735 Didn't know this. How is it done. Is the gas aspirated through the inlet or injected in some way?
@marcredwine87355 жыл бұрын
Most times it is aspirated into the intake, and instead of injectors they have a spark plug in the injectors position a very big spark plug. There is also a version where NG or digester gas is substituted along with diesel. As the ECM ramps up the NG it reduces the diesel the engine uses.
@Harley045 жыл бұрын
In fact, this is how you get runaway engines, say at a drilling site and there is gas around, they go like crazy! @@marcredwine8735
@jchelm19795 жыл бұрын
@@Harley04 while a diesel may run away if it gets stray gas. This is NOT why diesel engines run away! They generally run away because of things like a broken oil line and the engine running off the oil in the sump or a turbo seal blown and the engine ingesting the oil and running on it, or the governor fails wide open and causes the engine to run away. or a busted oil cooler and or intercooler and oil ingestion. The key to a diesel running away id they tend to run uncontrollably on their own oil. it would be extremely hard for them to catch a whiff of natural gas in open air and run away like this.
@montanasnowman31382 жыл бұрын
I wonder what they do about cracked heads.
@duncanstamps51832 жыл бұрын
Actually not as big of an issue as you would think, they took them off as a unit in the video but the heads are actually individual to each cylinder making "in-frame" or "in building" repairs much easier and manageable. If you look up head removal for this family of engine you'll see that from their 8 cylinder to their 32 cylinder(I think) they utilize the same design.
