Very nice. What do you use as the resist for this project?

Hi Patty, I use a carpet underlay or sheets of furniture packaging for the similar projects. I re-use them many times after washing. Thanks

Hello once again...How long does this project take you and what is the width when it goes through the final stages of rinse and dry...Thank you

Now when I have done dozens of these and I have everything ready - about 1.5h making at the table and rinsing, then 1 hour in a washing machine, then stuffing / shaping 10 min, then drying 12-36 hours, then final touches and packing for posting to clients. The size depends on wool and micron / shrinking ability. Comes with experience.

I am brand new to this so I am curious, is there a curtain kind of wool that you have to use???
@louisarull2275

Brandy, There is no special kind of wool - the only requirement it should felt well. Usually it is associated with fine wool fiber. The finer the wool, the faster the felting process, the less the craftsman is tired. On the other hand the coarser the wool the stronger the shape of the product. One can buy a small amount of wool and make a small project, then if satisfied use it for the making of cat cave.

You can use bubble wrap, or thing foam underlay

I've not tried this before, but is there a reason you couldn't use hot soapy water and then just rub with your hands? Truly asking - just discovered this and it's so neat I'd like to give it a whirl one day :D

The reason for me to use the hot water from the kettle and bar of soap is that my stone kitchen top is cold, the work looses temperature very fast - so I can warmup/ boil the water fast to keep the felt workable. The bar of soap just speeds up my process (works as felting / agitating tool) and keeps my hands away from hot water on some stages. If you plan to make something wet-felted my sincere advise - start with something smaller - make a hat / beret (even few of them) in the same technique with 30-50gr of wool before you move to bulky projects like cat cave made of 300 gr of wool.

I read the reply about the resist but I still cannot see what kind of material it is. I cannot wait to try this, but I need to know about the resist. Not familiar with furniture packaging. Thank you in advance.

You can use any plastic, even the rubbish bag. Cut a circle out of plastic bag, bubble wrap or any other strong and flexiable plastic. Thanks, Loui

I've read the comments and questions and didn't see anyone ask diameter for a large cat cave resist. Like for an adult cat.
@louisarull2275
@louisarull2275 3 жыл бұрын
For the bigger cat cave I would recommend making the resist about 60-70cm (24-27 inch). If it is any bigger it will be almost impossible to manipulate and hand-felt. The resulting size will not depend only on the size of the resist, but on the thickness of the layered wool. So the smaller resist with the bigger bulk of wool can give the same result as a bigger resist with the wool spread more thinly. And of course, the resulting size depends on the degree of felting / fulling the piece. The denser felt gives the smaller result, and vise-versa.

I'm trying to make this and my felt is scaling and flaking and not felting!! Help!!
@louisarull2275

You need to start with felting small things. Try to make a felted coin purse or beret hat - the same shape, smaller scale, easier to learn. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

I made it out of carpet underlay - white slightly bubbly synthetic material. Some wrapping from furniture or white goods can be used as well.

Can cottoon wool be used
@louisarull2275
@louisarull2275 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mamoii, It must be some "animal" fiber from goat, sheep, dog, rabbit, silk-noil (row silk leftovers) - then it will felt. The cotton is not animal fiber = does not felt, acrylic and rayon are not animal fibers = do not felt.
