Today we try to free up some winch cables and do some science experiments to test the thermostat (Cat calls it a regulator). We also do a little chemistry and make our own penetrating oil concoction to see if we can free up the winch cables.

Tidbit on Cat bolts, I was told by our cat dealer all cat bolts were grade 8, best made.

Hint on Cables... if you can get the end disconnected from the levers... you can slip a hose over the cable casing end.. and then fill it with penetrating oil or pump grease thru it with fittings on the end of the rubber hose extensions..

Hey man I turned into you the other night and I think what you’re doing but I told Tractor it’s great like you said it’s a hobby and just takes lots of patience with the old stuff but it sure is a lot of fun I think you get to see how the old-timers did things especially I really enjoyed how caterpillar put their mark on the end of each bolts that tells me there was pride in peoples work in the past just as I can see it in you you take your time your patience and looks like you take lots of pride in what you’re doing because like you said it’s nothing that you make money with and it looks like you totally enjoy it there always be setbacks but it’ll work out and time like you know it well I think you so much for your post like these not many people like that around anymore appreciate it have a good evening.

Thank you so much for your kind words Stacey! I read your comment and it took me a while to respond because you have the same name (even spelled the same) as an old acquaintance/friend that passed away tragically a couple of years ago. I really appreciate it and it means a lot to me. Take care!

inside the thermostat bulb is a rubber boot with a wax pellet below it.. when the temp comes up the wax expands and pushes on the boot that pushes the pin up and forces open the valve cup.. older thermostats may have alcohol in them that expand.. i don't know what year the wax pellet thermostats came into use.. do you have a PTO Sales around.. they might be able to make those winch control cables up for you .. there are also shops online that you can get them done also.. the Gauge is one piece .. but usually comes with a straight bulb on the end..

I know you won't believe. One of my remedies stick that control cable in a tube with dawn soap water Boil the cable just like making soup. I have had very good results with that method. I've used a industrial cleaner and dawn together as well.

I'll give it a shot if I can bend it far enough to fit in a pot. I might have an old beer keg that I cut the top off that might be able to fit it. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the tip!

Andrew Camarata was trying to find out about the winch on his Cat. Maybe you could reach out to him and help. He has a channel on KZfaq under his name. I really enjoyed this video and now a fan.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes I watch Andrew as well and i believe his winch was hydraulicly controlled, where mine is a direct drive.

Regarding cat bolts, they are stronger and better than a typical grade 8 bolt. The heads are thicker, and have better thread engagement. They are well worth cleaning up with a wire brush to reuse. Replacements from cat are much higher price than hardware store grade8, to the point that counterfeits are showing up...

Teleflex and Morse make these types of cables and I think the pricing may be better..

I remember seeing what looked like a third world country video where they fixed a cracked diesel head with tap plugs on a dirt floor. The strangest thing I ever saw, but it looked like when they were done it would have worked?

I've seen some of these videos too Merle. I think they are mostly filmed in India and its pretty interesting seeing what they get done with just the bare minimum of tools. As a matter of fact there is a whole channel with these types of videos: kzfaq.info

The original water temp gauge is a capillary gauge as per the parts book. There are no electrical connections.

Some cats had a blower fan and some had a fan that sucks air past it, consequently there are two different water pumps one for a blower and one for a sucking fan, get the wrong one and you will have perpetual overheating as it try’s to move water in the wrong direction. Since your rebuilding the water pump you should be in good shape since a rebuild is just resealing it and impeller will go in the same way

Yes, I see in my parts book there is an option for reversible fan blades but my unit just has the standard blades
