@@railrol82 For years, even way before the the recession of 2008, there have been talks of building a big new container inland port to take the containers from the South Florida ports and then sort them in this new facility instead of at the ports. Several states, including California, Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia, have these facilities. It creates room and capacity at the ports, since the stacked containers take up a lot of space which can be put to other uses and can reduce the size of the port while increasing its capacity. In Florida, Moore Haven, Pahokee, Belle Glade, and other places in that area have been considered for such a facility, which would definitely be served by FEC, maybe even CSX as well. And where FEC is, Norfolk Southern will have a presence also. Grupo Mexico is the owner of FEC, Texas Pacifico, and the far larger Ferromex. They have the bucks to build such a facility, although they certainly will get some funding like FEC did for its Ft Lauderdale Port Everglades facility (which was originally planned to be built in Miami Dade). Environmentalists have killed off all these proposals near Lake Okeechobee and other proposals near Ft Pierce, Ft Myers and Port St Lucie have grown in expense not only because of challenges by the local citizens but because of demands for population growth. A new facility is needed for Miami Dade because the FEC Miami Springs facility is at capacity and cannot be expanded any more. Neither can the auto rack facility. The rest of the yard is used for general freight cars and rock hoppers and gondolas. If I were them, I’d run the Medley rock trains through Miami Springs yard, go around the Miami International Airport and use the CSX line to Palm Beach and then use the unused new connection to the FEC and head north to where the rocks are needed. The few rock cars needed in Broward can be interchanged over the still likewise unused Iris connection. The CSX Opa Locka yard has room and can be used for the rock cars and maybe also general freight cars. This creates room at the Miami Springs facility. CSX can likewise serve any new intermodal and port facilities built in South Miami Dade County, which along with Broward is the closest port facility to Brazil Venezuela and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. Again, railroads, let’s put the new connections to use instead of letting them rot! South Miami Dade has the room for these new facilities and it’s about time that rails win one instead of the highway getting everything.
