After years, I just can’t help coming back to this to rewatch and read the comments to see if anyone still feels as touched by this as I do. It’s really remarkable how she makes you feel all she’s feeling through those facial expressions. It’s really gotten stuck with me. I think I’ll be coming back to this until the end of my days. It was first performed live in October 2010. The earliest live version I have found (10/21/10) was uploaded here by user ''seeair'', which is a unique solo piano version. It has been played at most concerts since then with her band backing her. I have at least 30 versions of this song, I think. See Ode To Chan forum for more information.

The other version that I think everyone’s referencing here is on BBC Music’s channel. Same set, hair, style and everything so shot on the same day just a slightly different performance. After looking a both versions side by side, this version is definitely a second take. The Stripes who were sitting in the background for this version were standing in the original take. Good catch Ray. The original version has much more emotion. Her eyes tear up as if it really means something to her.

Such a beautiful song - I guess there must have been two takes, because there's a 'BBC4' version which is the same but different. Actually, I think vocally the BBC4 version is better, but the understatedness of this is equally sublime. It isn't just music, it's an act of theatre too. I had Tom Waits as my marriage song but, if this had come out before, I'd have had this !
