This is an old Christian hymn that Stevens rerecorded and made into a top ten hit in 1971 that was all over the radio. It has the same effect on me that it appeared to have on you.

@@sciwiz57 right, I think they squared it away now. According to Cat, he said he didn't realize that Wakeman was never paid. It was actually Wakeman's piano piece, he had written it for a different song and Cat asked to use it.

When I first moved to Cambridge for school, from North Carolina, to greet the newness of the experience, I began nearly every morning with this song playing in my mind. Ever fresh as the morning dew. Like to think I still am. :) Gratitude will give a life an immediate upgrade. This, like "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", shows the power of softness. Soft power is lasting power. Rather than being uplifting hymns, so much of music has been reduced to yelling.

To correct a lot of people, the tune of the verse is based on a 17th century BAGPIPE tune that comes from the Isle of Mull in Scotland, named after the town of Bunnesan, It was originally used in the 1800s for a Christmas carol. In the 1930s, the poet Eleanor Farjeon adapted one of her poems, Morning has Broken, to the music for a children's hymnal. To help stretch the tune to get the 3 minutes needed for Top 40 radio of the early 70s, Rick Wakeman used inspiration from the work he was doing for his piece, Catherine Howard to write the interludes as well as a key change and repetition of the first verse to create the "chorus"(Cat Stevens wanted him to use the actual music of Catherine Howard)

For me, 'Morning Has Broken', rekindles the ambience of infant school morning assembly and the faint whiff of yesterday's spam fritters lingering in the air. Though a hymn with child like attachment, Cat ensured it also has enduring appeal for adults too.

Cat Stevens took this old hymn and made it his! What a beautiful song about finding God's handiwork all over the earth. Although he eventually chose Islam, he was searching for God during this period. He had been in the hospital for a length of time with tuberculosis and "Trouble" was more than likely written during this time (I could be wrong...I'm sure there's a musicologist out there who will correct me if I am lol). I have been a fan of his for many, many years. We played his song "Oh Very Young" at my sister's memorial service because she loved that song so much. For something a little more upbeat it's hard to beat "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" or even his cover of "Another Saturday Night".

He was the first singer-songwriter I became obsessed with, hunting down his records wherever I could find them (one in the gift shop of a car wash). This is from Teaser and the Firecat, and was one of the few songs I was listening to back then that my Mother loved. That magnificent piano was arranged and played by Rick Wakeman. Really love this 70s thing you're doing now, as that's when I started seriously getting into music.

When I was 21, 50 yrs ago, there was an emergency situation at a bldg, around 1k women and children were given Shelter at a bldg, they needed Security, I agreed to work there overnight. In the middle of the night, I remembered this song, I quietly sang this song to them, the place became very quiet and peaceful… I also sang “Moon Shadow”… it was a sweet experience. That night led to an epiphany that led to my becoming a Social Worker. I wanted to help people in trouble… and I did. I always remembered that night, it taught me that people in trouble, need people to let them know that they have people around them who care…
