CATAMARAN LIFE ON A DAZCAT: Is This What Our Future Looks Like? (MJ Sailing - Ep 154)

It's time to get a real feel for sailing on a performance catamaran in the size range we're looking at - between 42-45 ft. This week we find ourselves on something just slightly larger, a Dazcat 1495 named Hissy Fit.
For our day on the water, we try to find out how we feel with the size of the living space, how the boat handles vs the monohulls we've been cruising on up to this point, and what we think of the motion of the boat under sail.
Suffice to say, we're pretty smitten, and once again, very much looking forward to our catamaran build so that in a few years we'll be out cruising the waters just like this.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Simon and Darren of Dazcat Multihull Center for taking the time to bring us out for the day and answer the large number of questions we had about catamaran design and building. Your thoughtfulness and hospitality never ceases to amaze us!

Enjoy!
Much love from England!

So glad you enjoyed your sail and time on board Hissy Fit (D1495). Also hoping you managed to get all your questions answered (we're still here if you have more!). Just FYI - D1195 Sueños, that normally races with us, converted to a cruiser in 2018, with washing machine and all...if you find yourselves with some time to spare you might enjoy the video of her crossing back from the Canaries last year.

Beautiful boat. It would drive me crazy to be aboard and enjoying all this knowing I'm more than 2 years from owning anything comparable. You two have such willpower. Impressive. But it could get expensive having all these friends with their expensive boats. You'll want all the best features on yours. Fun watching Matt's brain capturing all the features and trade-offs for you boat. The following drone shots were impressive, especially with all the wind. And navigating with a large ship on the starboard bow. Nice job. I'm getting more and more anxious for you two to start your build! So much excitement to come!

At first I didn't like it because of the bare clinical looking spaces. As a live aboard I would enjoy a more warm and cozy interior. But @23:12 seeing the speed of this cat and handles like you describe is way beyond believable... Holy sh*t...That's a thing that would sell it for me... The history of Kit boats, planes, cars, houses etc is quite consistent. The value is in the finish. It is in the finishing that the short cuts are readily seen. Having said that. I have seen some gorgeous, innovative, owner built boats. They are 5-10% of the project boat totals ever started. A 44' cat doesn't compare to a 37' monohull. In my opinion a 44' cat comparison would better compared to a 66' monohull ( 2 hulls = 1 & 1/2 x's cat length 44+22=66) in combined deck & living space as well as marina fees. I wish you well and moderate weather.

again a nice boat. I think I mentioned before about the importance of resistance to hobby horsing and it looks like theyre on top of that. For them a major benefit is keeping the forward hull in the water and making the best of her waterline length for speed. Lots to think about I guess, the sub bus idea is something Im doing right now on Zaya, but without the switching sophistication. Innovative head enclosure. I wonder what you think of the helm, it looks to me to be quite precarious, its hard to share, and it will get tiring to always stand. I think I know what I would do but Im interested how you felt about in say worse weather. Another thing is the angle of the shafts from the engines, it will cost HP to run like that but I guess you arent dealing with a lot of HP in the first place. One thing about berths, try plan having the pillow end aft. In a collision or crash its better to break a leg that have a compressed cranial injury and a skull fracture. If you want more enclosed bulkheads a fast way to move around a boat with a number of bulkheads is to have short hand rails above, you can grab the rail and fly over the bottoms. cheers

I really love the dazcats, but I don't think I could live on one. The 1495 only weighs 5.5 tons, but you only have 3 tons of payload before you're going to be eating into all of that performance in a serious way, and just filling the fuel tank is over 500 kg. I think they would be amazing for something like the ARC (I bet with good weather you could really push to beat Marsaudon's 11 day 16 hour record set earlier this year), but yeah, I really don't think a Dazcat is the kind of boat I would be happy lounging on at anchor for weeks, and it would seem like an awful waste of their capabilities, lol. Those boats deserve to be run hard, not loaded down.

There is a lot to like on this cat, but thee are a Few rather serious flaws that i could see. The helm station is located well BUT there is NO HELM SEAT OR even a LEANING bar, to steady yourself in rolling seas. Plus the fact that if you lose your balance and step back with one foot you have a 3 ft fall backwards or if your death gripped to the wheel break your ribs if you step back. The rear cockpit cover does not keep water from raining into the salon unless its coming from the aft. Which brings up the glaring fact that there is only ONE SMALL forward facing window and only 2 small roof vents, If you can't keep the salon door open because of rain there is no way to keep the salon even reasonably cool, a big problem in the tropics with high humidity. The Keel is AMAZING and hopefully not snag nets or lines on the prop and may even slide down the rudder as well. the engine access being in a safe area, making access in a emergency under way is brilliant, as well as eliminating the stern drive makes life a lot easier to maintain and cheaper as well. Keep the reviews coming! Is the Dazcat a kit boat, Build it yourself type? CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.

Beautiful boats. Clearly well thought out and designed. I would question the placement of the fridge though. I would think in hotter climates (ie Caribbean) it could be subjected to the heat radiating on the hull. But then if that is the only thing I can nit pick on...hey, again very nice cat.

I remember having to move my chocolate supply from a hull side cabinet to a midship while in the Caribbean on our last fiberglass boat. So, I think you're correct in that with the dark hull and outboard location, it would increase run time for the fridge. Not a problem up here though. -Matt

Clearly designed and built for sailing and racing. Working with a platform such as this one, by the time you add the cruising creature comforts, I wonder at what point would the added weight (and distribution) compromise the design intent? As you design and build your boat will there be a tipping point where you just have to stop adding cruising amenities? I’m sure, when the time is right you’ll share many of these design decisions with us.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 4 жыл бұрын
They all have light ship numbers (just the basic boat) and displacement (max loaded figure) Between those two numbers is the payload and what you can bring along. We're looking at around 5000 pounds for the designs we are interested in. If we add a washing machine, you subtract its weight from the number and you can now carry less of something else. But less weight is better. Matt

Horizontal foils on the rudder will create a lot of vertical forces on the rudder axis. Also, it will create drag when reducing pitching so how does this give you extra speed? I can understand it will pitch less.

Keeping the bow in the water will maintain the length at waterline. Waterline length determines hull speed. Longer hull means higher top speed.

My first impression is that Simon and Daz are nice guys who have met fellow sailors who are kindred spirits. It's a funny thing about sailing, you meet a lot of kindred spirits wherever you go. Mind you, there are also some ultra-competitive a-holes who diminish the sport of sailing by their win-at-all-costs attitude and their willingness to cheat and lie to get a win. I've raced with good sailors since I was 16 or 17, Olympic gold and silver medalists and multiple world championship winners. Competitive? Very. A-holes? Never.

Wow. Yeah I think I'm convinced, multihulls are the way to go. The difference between 5-8 knots and 9-12? Seriously? (If Columbus, Drake, Nelson, Cook had known they could get a multihull then all those famous dates would be a year or two later.) Being a nerd of course I'm drawn to the trimarans. I've seen are some videos comparing the multihulls, but performance, blue water ability haven't figured in the comparisons as much as I would hope for. Comparing a million+ cat with a $200k cat is kind of apples and diamond rings. So far for me the Neel 51, or maybe the Dragon Fly 40. The Neel 51 though is kind of like sailing a two bedroom house, but a very fast bungalow. The Dragon Fly might only be a CE A rating, which means it's probably not what you want to be in when you hit the Agulhas Current around South Africa in after you've done 15,000 miles. So I'm looking forward to your transition to multihulls.

While I like this boat, this catamaran is build for fast sailing and not for cruising. The winches are mounted at places which makes it hard to control the boat with one person. There is no insulation to prevent condensation. Remodeling this boat for cruising with solar, batteries, washing machine, etc would likely add too much weight.
@ericzander1254
@ericzander1254 4 жыл бұрын
I agree whole heartedly. I've never seen such a cat before today. A fast sailing cat with more living space than most cruising cats. Usually I see cats as floating trailers or house boats. Looking at Hissy Fit, I saw large open living spaces along with beautiful curves and flowing lines where a boat needs that sort of thing. ie the hull. If i were to point out a negative, with my zero experience, i would say that there was too much carbon fiber. Not! Although, I'm sure the boat is out of my price range, lol. Did you see those sails? My god, they were a work of art. Everything on that boat was nice. Those fellas at DazCat sure know how to make a beautiful boat. Skol!

Nice for racing along the coast during the day. But with that little comfort, not a bluewater cat. The demand is huge for owner's versions, so the price level is very high. For those who can afford it, the Exquisite and Privilege brands are very good.

It's a good idea and it's been tried. There are a couple of problems: they create drag and, the killer, you get a downward force if you drive into a wave and that can cause the boat to cartwheel, which is not good.

Mate, some of the most beautiful views on the planet are in Utah. Monument Valley? Zion National Park? The canyons? All that dry, vertical stuff and also the skiing? Absolutely brilliant views. People travel from Australia to Utah just to take photographs. I say this as someone who has one of the best views in Australia from his home. We're on the east coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Our home office is 100M above sea level and we have an 180° view of the the bay, ocean beaches and off-shore islands, the headlands, and wooded slopes to the south. Here's a bad photo of part of our view: photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-LHhCsx5/0/eb226345/O/i-LHhCsx5.jpg The trees obstructing the view have been cut down.
