you were definitely not supposed to win there, 6s just went crazy. 3:1 production setups not only inefficient 3:1 but also being more vulnerable to 7s because of the need for higher production

National tournaments will either have a spiral board (similar to colonist) or specially prepared boards that are considered “balanced”. Either way, tournaments should strive to have boards that have playable positions for all players.
