Fly Fishing: #1 -- a good rod does help a lot, those cheap whippy rods don't load well. #2 -- lots of false casting with a nymph rig can always lead to problems, even if you've been doing it forever. Try a roll cast, or let the water load your rod at the end of your drift and just chuck n duck it back up. (less chance of everything getting tangled) #3 -- you had a lot of line out, try a quicker cast with less line on your backcast and let the power of the forward stroke take out your fly line. Also -- watch casting vids and keep working at it! It's super rewarding when you get it all right and hook up. Great vids, man.

Good post. Fly fishing is like many pastimes. It's rewarding because it is difficult. Takes a while to learn but it's a skill that will stay with you for life. Like golf - but better.

Yep. A fish on the fly is about as rewarding as it gets. It also provides singular focus, which is one of the best things for the mind. I sold my golf clubs long ago....

Regarding Andrew's broken fly rod. I believe he had bought a Sage fly rod. Sage rods come with a lifetime warranty. I believe that applies to accidental breakage even. When researching fly rods for purchase check into the warranty. Accidents do happen, car doors, pick up tailgates, etc.

$75 payment to “fix” your sage rod. The butt end of my sage approach 5wt rod broke off when I took a fall fishing on some rocks. Paid $75 to fix and took about 3 months and i could tell they glued back my original butt end of the rod. Which I thought was kind of cheap for such a prestigious brand. Anyways I still use the rod and am a fan of their equipment.

dankleaves PA here, you can catch trout (stocked of course ): ), bass, and a few species of panfish. Other species that I don't prefer to eat but like to catch include carp, Pike, muskee, catfish, Creek chubs, crayfish, etc. All in the same river. I don't really expect much different other than species in other parts of the country. Love catching carp though as they are the biggest fish we have here and put up.the best fight.

Fishing tip: This is a great tip that most people don't use. Applies to all fishing. Sharpen the hook frequently. Get a little hook sharpener, they are cheap, learn how to use it, use it often, after every fish, after getting snagged, after dragging bottom. If fish are getting off your hook, sharpen it. It will penetrate easier and deeper. Cheers from B.C.

With the craw dads, next time you catch some, you can purge them so they are cleaner before you cook them put them in a container of water and pour some salt in the water it will cause them to throw up the contents in their stomach making them taste better when you cook them. God bless

@TonyisToking
@TonyisToking 5 жыл бұрын
Isaiah Stanley Nah, you’re missing the point. It’s not about how clean they are... it’s about what they eat. When you eat the crayfish without purging its stomach you’re potentially consuming whole undigested bugs which sometimes have a bitter/off putting flavor to us humans. Best to purge the stomach, no matter how clean they are.

Fly fishing is all about patience and timing... as well when you are casting focus mostly on moving your elbow and keeping the rod to a 12 o’clock 2 o’clock pattern. 12 o’clock being straight above your head. Hopefully this helps but the best way is 100% just to practice and stay at it. It takes everyone a while to get used to it. Don’t give up on it!! Good luck

He's right, it's a hand dance, it's watching the line and timing the move of the rod to keep it moving in smooth lines. There's a "little" wobble you do that makes the whole movement a very narrow oval that keeps you from getting the bullwhip effect, because the entire line needs to stay in motion until you finally lay it out.

Fly fishing for trout is a blast, two things, the rod and reel don't matter all that much, but invest some money into the right fly line, be sure you have the right line for the fishing you're going to do. (Weight forward, sinking, or whatever) and you'll get way better results. Also look up on KZfaq how to single and double haul the line and you'll get way more distance in you cast and it'll take the slack outta your line.

hey Matts, next time, don't give the crayfish water. Just like with crabs, they will breathe out all the oxygen in the water and die. crayfish and lobster lasts longer than crab for some reason though so it's not as bad. crayfish live outside of water pretty long too. Otherwise the video is extremely entertaining, I found the best way to watch this is to put it on while I grade papers. Listening to you talk is pretty relaxing, and it's so informative, no one second or word you say is wasted! Also that part where you didn't know what the yellow thing was called was so funny. Fly guy here, watch your back cast when you're fly fishing. Your backcast should form a nice shape J sideways loop before your forecast. Let your rode and line do the work, it's just nice and easy. Typically for fly fishing you don't need a long cast just a nice presentation. And when you set the hook just lift straight upward, no need to really set the hook. Also debard your hook with pliers/hemostats don't wanna hook yourself!

3 years later, but his fly fishing technique had the issue of casting into the line making it fall out. He was pushing and pulling too soon which cancelled out the energy in the line. He was also letting line out on the forward and back casts, effectively removing his ability to control the line's energy. You want the head of the line out and to get a good energy load into it before you start releasing line. If you're a novice, you should practice shorter casts and then work up to longer casts, but if you must cast long, try to only start adding line length on the backcast before your final cast out. When false casting to build energy in the line, you will feel the tension build on the forward and back cast. If the energy is still building and you reverse your cast direction, you will be cancelling out the energy. Wait for the energy in the line to stop building (you'll feel the tension peak or even start to fall off) before you begin your forward or back casts. Also, having your nymphs bounce on the bottom is a good thing, not a bad thing. Bigger fish sit lower in the water column often, and they get bigger because they use less energy to eat prey on the bottom, and because they also have the ability to see more above themselves.

I use my wrist while fly casting letting the rod do the work. I also always use a dry dropper set up. That uses a dry fly on top of the water and then a small amount of tippet (18in) tied to the bend of the dry fly hook then add your nymph. You use the dry fly as a strike indicator. PM me and I will tell you about an amazing place I fish where I caught no less than 100 trout in 3 days. Several times I caught two fish at the same time. Also, look up nail knot for attaching your leader to the fly line. I sure wouldn’t trust that barbed eyelet if you hook a nice fish. Tight lines!

Andrew losing all that fish had me actually cheering him on. At the same time the fisherman inside me was laughing super hard.

with fly fishing, cast with your forearm, and keep your upper arm level more. Slowly feed out line, and your accuracy and distance will improve. Happy Fishing my friend!

I know you you didnt mean to say minimum and corrected it but imagine an elitist regulation like that, 5 trouts minimum or you get fined for being a miserable fisherman LOL

Crawdads (as we call them) are sooo good! We pour a bunch of salt in the bucket and it makes them spit out/up sand and other nasty stuff. It also calms them down. Dip their tail and claw meat in drawn butter...oh lawdy!

In fly fishing, you have to wait longer on your back cast. Also make sure you keep your elbow straight. For your second time, you are REALLY REALLY good.

Yeah, had to hit the rewind button and watch one of your old camping videos -- trout fishing. Gotta love the outdoors here in CA. I have been camping in Stanislaus for the past 30 years w/ family and we always fly fish for trout and eat them for breakfast. Just love the scenery in your video in this episode. Brings me back to a time long lost... and in this day and age, almost forgotten... I'm like you in the sense I'd rather be on the ocean (you in yer boat, me in my yak), but you gotta admit the forest has a calming effect that rejuvenates the soul and the wild trout just can't be beat. No matter the size. ;-)
