Fishing off my balcony while we are in lockdown. I hope to burly in larger fish in the future or maybe spear one of the massive yellow-eyed mullet that swims around my window on the houseboat. Welcome to my catch and cook video here in Mapua, New Zealand. I hope you enjoy this Video. Clay 😊

On the 1st of April, I phoned the National Police Centre to ask if I was still aloud to net fish off my houseboat balcony during this lockdown. I explained that this is where I am sleeping until we can get building supplies to repair the old farmhouse where the weather is coming in through the roof and rotten windows. I was told no fishing allowed period. I am not going to break this law even though I can see no logic in it...therefore there will be no more fishing or fishing videos that have been recorded after the 1st of April sorry

Hi "Clay", good video. Your houseboat collects enough water to fill your 400 litre tanks if you can keep birds off (use deterrence devices). Your onboard garden can be widely expanded. I have noticed that there is plenty of light coming into the houseboat. I was impressed with the planter boxes you put up on the side of your house, the cabbages? You should have some boxes with water reservoir bases onboard so they do not end up like the Camelia! Radishes are very fast growing and as you know, great to eat! ...have you considered using the leaves in a salad? Lots of herbs will grow well onboard with good soil. I saw you scratching around to get some old chicken poo, & I was scratching my head saying "Clay, what about the sheep!" Sheep poo is fantastic for boosting and rejuvenating your poor looking soil (going by the colour and texture of what you & the nephew were working with in the black pots. I am in Sydney Australia and I'm pretty sure Opera house nets (your one) have now been banned (only in fresh waters) to protect our Platypus & native rare freshwater crayfish population. When I was a kid, I just collected washed up plastic soft drink bottles, cut off the pointy end, cut little holes all around and just reversed the top I cut off which fits snugly into the bottle! (Bread is good for attracting mullet). After a long while of catching poddy Mullet and yellowtail for live & dead bait I found it more effective to cut off the top neck of the bottle, still having it curved inwards to prevent losses and I started DOUBLING my haul! Trash to treasure mate, we need to do this more! I heard about the hunting ban (from you), I understand where the government is coming from, but have we forgotten years gone by? You will remembet just 30 years ago there was no mobile network, no GPS, 60Yrs ago almost no emergency services and hardly ever emergency extraction! We need to stop being so reliant on emergency services and be more self sufficient! You are free to spread your flounder net far and wide and do any houseboat fishing that was legal before the lockdown. Keep well Clay, stay safe.

Yellow eyed mullet are a common small fish here in NZ they are a mullet species that you can catch on hook and line they are not related to your herring in Scotland. Occasionally you can get mackeral just like the british ones though not so common. we also have a species we call yellowtail which are also a mackeral though different also excellent eating.

Right now we are not allowed to take our boats to sea so I am trying to find other ways to fish from my houseboat. My freezer is full of burly as I was expecting to be out fishing this month for snapper. I can't eat the burly mate. Different times call for different measures. Eventually, I will work out a more economical way to fish from the house boat.
