I'm not a big fan of fishing, but as far as catch and release being humane I think it really depends on the situation and the species. Battling a large fish to exhaustion for hours just to get a picture of it is cruel, and the fish have a really hard time recovering and often die from lactic acid build up in their muscles, or trauma from being pulled out of deep water. Some fish also have more sensitive mouths than others. It's unlikely that bony mouthed fishes such as Perciformes are in pain when hooked in the lip with a barbless hooks. I'm not saying these fish don't feel pain, they certainly can in other parts of their bodies. All I'm saying is that catching a six inch bluegill in a creek and quickly releasing it is very different from fighting a large oceanic species to exhaustion. I have caught small sunfish, that immediately after releasing them they quickly join a school of other individuals as if nothing happened. It's a lot nicer then snagging them with a cast net. It's also best to use lures rather than bait. I don't eat meat or fish, but I still don't think ALL fishing is evil. You could also just invest in a waterproof camera (I do both). Don't fall for the PETA propaganda and have a great time on the water. :)
